Our legal immigration system is broken. But very few Americans understand how difficult and costly it is to use the legal system to immigrate. And that is to our detriment, a light needs to be shined on this and fixed. But right now it’s being used a a political tool to divide.
Also many don’t understand that currently Asylum laws allow ppl to enter illegally and then claim asylum. After they claim asylum it will take a couple of years to find out if they can stay. These immigrants, and their children, and their great-great grandchildren, will one day tell the story about how the walked for thousands of miles in the wilderness to come here. As a veteran they always say there’s no programs for veterans and let me tell you there are tons of programs for so many veterans. The problem is how they are managed most veterans don’t know of these programs and will never know of them because one they don’t tell you or the veteran doesn’t go searching for them. Another problem with veteran programs are the wait times and the people that work in these programs are very judgmental to veterans because most of them are veterans and there is that stigma of being weak for searching for help that persists till this day.

This is true for most government safety nets because 1. They always end up with way less money than is needed to make large dents in issues, usually ending up as band aids to a gushing wound 2. Even if an initiative has semi proper funding politicians who are against supporting welfare will find a way to funnel funds to private interests so they can hire incompetent workers who waste more than they help. Both issues causing people to think socially funded programs can't fully address problems. Citizens after enough times become less and less trusting of governments that want to help but can't if no one asks. While companies who present a worse alternative profit off the suffering of everyday folks. It's a vicious cycle.
My boyfriend is a veteran and was homeless for a long time before getting the proper help from the VA. He's starting a charity to help other homeless vets and hoping he'll be a pipeline from homelessness to a sense of stability for other vets.

100% agree, but what annoys me is that one party in particular constantly nukes any attempt at reforming the LEGAL immigration process. There is straight up not enough staff within the DHS and USCIS to handle the volume of applicants we receive, which means the screening quality goes down and the time to wait goes up. Mike Johnson refusing to even bring the latest border bill to a vote is just the latest act in a string of seemingly intentional moves to continue to let the system rot and collapse under its own weight.
My little sisters husband who she recently married has been here since he was a baby not born here but he just lost his green card which he pays a couple grand for yearly pays taxes out of his paychecks for services he will never be able to use like social security. And despite what people say getting married doesn’t m magically fix that stuff. It’s a complete disaster and 5he huge influx and political bullshit isn’t helping. This stuff is sad and frustrating he is also one of the hardest working people I know and never complains. That's pretty much how all of these stories and riots go. I was working in an office building when the Michael Brown protests were happening in Clayton. The actual protesters were about 30-40% of the total crowd. The rest were simply media - there were more media covering the event than actual protestors. People just don't turn out to these things but the media will angle the camera shots so they look much more impressive than they are. I'm not saying that organizing is a bad thing - I'm simply saying that the media always sells an over inflated narrative because otherwise no one would watch the segment.

A Social Security check is not completely a socialist program. If it were a pure socialist program, the amount that every individual contributed to it would be the same and the amount of the benefits received (paid out) by each individual would be the same. What that pastor said about this being the "new Ellis Island" really resonated with me. These immigrants, and their children, and their great-great grandchildren, will one day tell the story about how the walked for thousands of miles in the wilderness to come here. As a veteran they always say there’s no programs for veterans and let me tell you there are tons of programs for so many veterans. The problem is how they are managed most veterans don’t know of these programs and will never know of them because one they don’t tell you or the veteran doesn’t go searching for them. Another problem with veteran programs are the wait times and the people that work in these programs are very judgmental to veterans because most of them are veterans and there is that stigma of being weak for searching for help that persists till this day.

This is true for most government safety nets because 1. They always end up with way less money than is needed to make large dents in issues, usually ending up as band aids to a gushing wound 2. Even if an initiative has semi proper funding politicians who are against supporting welfare will find a way to funnel funds to private interests so they can hire incompetent workers who waste more than they help. Both issues causing people to think socially funded programs can't fully address problems.
Citizens after enough times become less and less trusting of governments that want to help but can't if no one asks. While companies who present a worse alternative profit off the suffering of everyday folks. It's a vicious cycle.
My boyfriend is a veteran and was homeless for a long time before getting the proper help from the VA. He's starting a charity to help other homeless vets and hoping he'll be a pipeline from homelessness to a sense of stability for other vets.

100% agree, but what annoys me is that one party in particular constantly nukes any attempt at reforming the LEGAL immigration process. There is straight up not enough staff within the DHS and USCIS to handle the volume of applicants we receive, which means the screening quality goes down and the time to wait goes up. Mike Johnson refusing to even bring the latest border bill to a vote is just the latest act in a string of seemingly intentional moves to continue to let the system rot and collapse under its own weight.
My little sisters husband who she recently married has been here since he was a baby not born here but he just lost his green card which he pays a couple grand for yearly pays taxes out of his paychecks for services he will never be able to use like social security. And despite what people say getting married doesn’t m magically fix that stuff. It’s a complete disaster and 5he huge influx and political bullshit isn’t helping. This stuff is sad and frustrating he is also one of the hardest working people I know and never complains. Doesn’t complain about the racism doesn’t complain about shitty jobs, he has nothing but gratitude even after all the horrible treatment and hoops he has to jump thru.

That's pretty much how all of these stories and riots go. I was working in an office building when the Michael Brown protests were happening in Clayton. The actual protesters were about 30-40% of the total crowd. The rest were simply media - there were more media covering the event than actual protestors. People just don't turn out to these things but the media will angle the camera shots so they look much more impressive than they are. I'm not saying that organizing is a bad thing - I'm simply saying that the media always sells an over inflated narrative because otherwise no one would watch the segment.
