@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics the upper cover looked like it had a new gasket so maybe it’s been fixed and someone just didn’t clean up after or replace the belt. Either way still has no coolant so that needs address. Makes me miss my Tiguan though.

Lucky for both you and Dan your cars are left hand drive! The gateway on right hand drive cars req removal of the wiper frame to access it behind a cover accessed from below the windscreen. It sits on to of the pedal box, almost impossible to access from inside the car. May help others looking for the gateway on RHD Golf and Skoda Superb around 2012 ish.
I saw Dan's video and I knew this would be exactly the same. Ivan would be proud of your NPR repair. I'm sure that module would probably be fine but as a professional, you can't warranty it so a new gateway module is the only way.
One aspect I like with some of these scan tools now is the topology scan, where it scans all the modules and lets you know which ones are working or have codes in them.
5:45 Those look like inductors or common mode chokes but I could be wrong. I believe the can bus lines are bi-directional so they wouldn't be opto-isolators because opto-isolators normally aren't bi-directional. You would use a common mode choke to prevent common mode noise from getting to the can bus transceiver. It basically cleans up the noise before the signal gets further cleaned by the bus transceiver.
I did see Dan's video, he didn't take it as far as you did Jake. And even though it needs replacing for warranty. You took it where few techs in your field are willing or able to go my friend. Great Job. 👍
We both proved the failure and that’s what matters. Sometimes you are left wondering what else might be wrong with the car but in both cases we was able to get the communication restored and verify any other possible issues.
What’s going on is referred to as latent cold solder joint failures. Was major item we used to look and test for when manufacturing populated circuit boards. (Not for automotive industry) If the automated equipment heat and flux settings on a pick and place system we’re wrong during assembly, this can happen. Testing included repeated testing during a series multiple extreme heat and cold cycles. This would expose bad solder jobs and require a “controlled” reflow process and retesting.
Great diagnostic, Jake! Reflowing solder joints can bring modules back to life, but it's a gamble - good decision on the replacement of the gateway (if it fails on the road, it's dead in the water). You and Dan got the same fault, almost simultaneously - what are the odds :-)
As RainmanRaysRepairs says, things (carproblems) seems to come in waves. Not the first time DD and Ray tackle the same problem at the same time, it's your turn now as it seems 😄
The reflow reminds me of all the xbox360's with the 'Red Ring of Death' fixes, reflowing the boards, they usually failed again though, so yeah, gateway board should be a recommended change.👍🙂

There is no Optoisolator on this board, the components you are showing in 5:53 are 'Ferrite Chip Common-mode Filter' (In most cases dual 51µH Coil). Components are used for CAN-BUS Filtering.
Another good one, reflow-a go-go, I'm a fan of reflow using leaded solder, as modern leadfree is not as reliable. The aerospace and avionics industry use leaded solder for safety, I guess the auto industry does not that reliability!

And those are isolators, but not opto-isolators. The opto-isolators wouldn't be wire wound, they are LED based, hence the opto part, but you know that. Those are more like magnetic / inductor type isolators, like used in Ethernet jacks and other com equipment. Which makes sense, it is com signals after all.

They aren't isolators, they are simple common mode chokes. You cannot galvanically isolate CAN bus signals with a simple passive transformer like you can with ethernet, it requires active circuitry that needs power to both sides so you won't find an isolator with four pins.
I bet it comes down to Powers and Ground on a deeper level. That gateway uses a voltage regulator that's probably fried. If curious, check pin 5 (far right) of the V4276 chip for voltage around 5vdc. Invput voltage of 12 should be on pin 1.
that 5 pin chip to the right is a voltage regulator total failure of a module it more likely to be something common to the whole operation of the device so i would go with checking that chips outputs
Here in Germany we have a word for VW not Volkswagen we say Völlig Wertlos translated into English totally worthless. But in German the first letters writ better of course. I saw Dan yesterday too, need to make an appointment with him soon. Got a missfire and can't find the problem it's roughly a 500km ride. But Dan is pretty busy.
After year 2000, there was a change to lead free solder, this resulted in electronics failure due to poor bonding to component pins that didn't have the correct plating. Perhaps the gateway has this issue, if the part number has been superceded, likely the problem has been resolved, just a thought based on experience.
Those are not optocouplers, they're common mode chokes. They filter EMI but are otherwise a low resistance connection for the signal. The CANbus transcievers are likely integrated in the main microcontroller.
Interesting, My scanner has the FCA gateway subscription. I c also have the bypass pigtail that you can unplug gateway module, plug in pigtail and bypass module entirely. Awesome for this kind of diagnosis. Just a thought. Please note that there are 2 pigtails I am aware of. But you can unplug module, plug in, and then just plug in scanner to pigtail. Its the 12-8 connector (12 in 1, 8 in the other)
I funny I work only on European cars and VW is one of the most common one I work on and I have yet to replace one I guess I’m lucky but good to know if I get no comm with the scan tool and no start.

Just curious if Topdon has J2534 device with their tool. I was curious what is your go to J2534 device you use the most. Thanks for the time you take to do these videos.
Yes the do have something modules like the Smart have a j2534 device. I've never used it though because I have other oem tools or the snap-on pass thru pro 4 which is just a rebranded cardaq 3. It's the most compatible on the market but it's not perfect by any means.

Great vid! So how do you 'reflow' a pcb? Does that involve hot air or a solder gun? I have an annoying dot matrix LCD display on a on old 01 Mercedes that ONLY works when warmed up and I cannot find where the fault is exactly but I know for sure it's on the PCB board because I blasted it with a hair dryer.

The belt looked really bad lol. I think someone didn’t tighten the oil filter good or something maybe? It was everywhere.
@@autodiagyt it has to be a blown seal or something... Maybe caused by a bad PCV system? Those engines are a hot mess 🔥😂
