I've been using Rnote daily for almost 2 years to study electrical engineering. I enjoy it a lot and i'm not looking to change. I think the UI is really intuitive and it even has a left handed mode too. I use an hp 2in1 laptop with a Wacom Bamboo pen.
I used Joplin until i discovered Obsidian. The markdown implementation is way better, Joplin tended to get my text formatting wrong a lot of the time. Also, Obsidian is much more customizable. It's true that it doesn't come with any free way to sync your notes out of the box, so i use Syncthing to back them up in real time. Obsidian was a game changer for my note taking.
Hyprland is getting very stable, if you want to try it (I recomend it because it honestly does a lot of things right and it's just nice looking with the animations)
When switching to nix??? strong points for arch are AUR, cutting edge versions, full customization and bragging rights... - Nix stable branch itself has thrice the number of packages than AUR - fearless full customization, you even start to customize systemd daemons regularly... - we can install any version of any package without conflicts.. which means, i have nightly builds of many packages... bleeding than AUR - with all these.. it's stable than Debian....!!! - and also NIX BTW bragging rights.... (cuz first time learning to configure sucks.. ngl, but then is smooth road ahead..)
I’ve been using a Lenovo Duet 5 Chromebook with PostmarketOS for studying for 4 months everyday now with Rnote and must say that I’m super happy with it as the software consistently gets better and better.
I love joplin! Once I got a little more advanced with it. I decided to use filebase S3 to sync. I also downloaded the portable version of joplin and installed it on my veracrypt drive so it's also encrypted st rest. But i mostly use it with my mobile devices and with dex when im at home. I created a table template as well as a toggle list template so it's fully functional on my mobile devices. It has all the features I use.
I think, I tried Joplin several years ago and it wasn't suitable for my usage. Also probably it didn't have sync feature at that time. Instead I used SuperProductivity. I like it for features like tracking time, syncing with cloud, timeline, backlog, etc. The only thing that I don't like is an interface. Joplin's interface is a little better on my opinion.
I did use one notes first but i did switch using online notes , i did find evenotes very helpfull and have a lot of features compared to something like keep notes , if it just for local notes i use just libreoffice just fine ... but im bit interested to Rnote i will see how its go
I'm back and forth between Joplin and Trillium, but gravitating more and more towards Trillium. Trillium looks better and has a better interface than Joplin for me.
Xournal? It is fairly basic, but it is cross platform with Windows and Mac as well, and seems version stable. The interface is a bit older, but I've had little issue with it.
I am more familiar with LaTeX than Markdown. But I don’t think you can make something like Joplin using LaTeX (or at least more difficult from a developer standpoint).
Do you notice the surface getting warm when writing? One concern I've had with the surface is that some reviews say it can get quite warm, even when doing low cpu usage tasks and especially when charging.
By default it did, and the battery also drained really fast. After I installed and configured TLP on a basic level, it doesn't anymore. I made a video about that btw
I came to the same conclusion. But it has to be said that if you are used to OneNote, Joplin is a big compromise. But probably still the smallest compared to other tools.
In the end, after a few months, I returned to OneNote anyway. Better use on Linux its slow online version rather than being unhappy with alternatives. With Joplin for 6 monts, it could be good app with better developers. Month with Obsidian, it's very cool app but I miss some features from OneNote. So OneNote it is.
Do you have a means to sync notes between the pixel phones and iphone? Also how does the pixel compare to the iPhone? Been thinking of switching to a pixel and probably running graphineos.
@@capsized8603 its actually very seamless and isnt that different to using iPhones And if for some reason Graphene is has ended support for your pixel phone you can switch to Calyx OS Divest OS And Many other amazing Roms

Interesting app.
Was about to say. It has image and PDF support as well.

There's Obsidian too, but many Linux users wouldn't use it because it's proprietary
Yes
Correct. I tested Obsidian and its very good, but replaced it with Logseq due to the topic you mention here.

Obsidian is another option, it can be as simple or as complex as you want it. It also supports much more advanced plugins.
Obsidian is hands down the best note taking/second brain app out there. It isn't open source, but it's free...and the plugin support is top tier.
+1 for Obsidian
propitiery.
Obsidian is proprietary, so it is a no no for a lot of people
@@mouk3y there also AnyType (open source) inspired by Notion

Okular to annotate pdfs (no handwriting supported) and Joplin. It covers all my needs studying CS at the moment

VRR finally just got merged for GNOME 46, you should make a video on it when it releases in late March.
Oh, I'm gonna
Joplin is enough for 99 percent of people
And obsidian too
For small notes like todo or sticky notes i prefer google keep

While in a different category, I would recommend LogSeq as a possible alternative.

Yeah, its the interface that doesn't work for me. I find it very non intuitive to use personally
Rnote is awesome... glad to have such high quality app in Linux
What about Xournal++?
It's not bad but I don't like its interface personally
@@MichaelNROH But it's much more stable and mature, because it's based on xournal. You could've at least included it as an honorable mention.
Closed source, but Obsidian is very powerful and capable on Linux, Windows, Android, etc etc,
I wish Joplin apps weren't built with JavaScript.

Obsidian is great. But I prefer Logseq as an open source alternative.
I am getting a surface go 2 soon because it's smaller than the pro, but seeing you using the pro 7+, it may not be that big....
I use Obsidian for notes. Another good one is Logseq. It's kinda like the FOSS version of Obsidian.
Not really. Obsidian is about normal notes, Logseq is about buletpointed notes
what? Logseq is nothing like Obsidian.... we can compare it more to maybe RoamResearch
Another great alternative is Trillium Notes!
I use standard notes for my Pixel Phones and iPhone 14
