    Yes, they did use news papers for insulation. My grand mother told me that they moved a lot when she was a young mother, and she said that before she moved into any place, back in the 1920 1930 s, that ammonia was poured by teaspoon in every crack or hole in the walls and floors, so that it would kill any bugs living in those spaces. then they twirled up news paper to plug up the holes, dipped in ammonia, then if the room was very drafty, it was covered in wet news paper until she could earn enough money to buy wall paper. This generation worked so hard for and at everything they had, thank you brothers of decay for always showing respect for the people and places you visit.

      April Morris yes thankyou for sharing . In the old farm houses here in the northwest coast of Canada they also used catalogs from simpsonsears and eatons stores to fill the space under the floors to insulate.as a child I was at an old homestead and sat and read some of these as they were exposed but in perfect condition,what a day that was ,sitting in the sun front the windows and being transported through time by these books.every thing they needed was sent on boat from these store so I could see exactly how they did everything from how they dressed to how they built everything for the farm work etc. I love how these young men can put me back there with every episode.now am am an elder and sometimes I see things in these videos from my own youth and it makes me smile.

    Yes Leslie' Back in those early days they would save all Horse Hair Trimmings and then sell it to Mattress factories who would then Boil and Sterilize it. This process would then make the hair curl and then more easily Matt together. because of the density of hair in quantities it became perfect for Mattresses. Some places would also mix it with straw and then use it in Furniture Upholstery as well. i send you and Jordy much Love

    I love to watch your videos. I always try to picture how the rooms looked when the house was built. It's hard to imagine at some point it definitely was new. Think about the family that sat at the table everyday or used that old car to drive down the road. I wonder if 50 years from now will someone be filming my abandoned house. Keep up the good work gentlemen.

    The large water-operated item is a grist mill, used to grind wheat and other grains into flour. There was highly likely some sort of paddle-wheel mechanism that used the force of the water to move the stones, one against the other.

    The final car of your video is a Vauxhall Cresta from 1958/9 - basically a car made to look like an American car but built in England by Vauxhall and very desirable to resore although as you say this one wiill not run again but some of the parts would be very useful (doors and steering column for example) - this is a good video - nice to see the rooms are not being disturbed - you are both respectful of the places you visit.

    Good job! You boys find the most cool places to explore! What a find, abandoned over 50 years. Just for the record (because you ask for the English words for things) "Kinderwagon" in English is called either a Baby Carriage or a Baby Stroller. Strollers are smaller and Carriages have a large bed like thing for the baby to sleep, while strollers are more portable,, they look like little wheel chairs and the back will go back into a lying position for the child to sleep. :) I'm glad you guys are so inquisitive.
    Good find. Keep on exploring. Enjoy Europe!

    Hi Lesley & Jordy, wow 50 yrs it is abandoned! Like the cabinet glass with the etched glass! The beds, night stands & clothes closets would of been great if not so old & decayed. Wow, 4th floor that pulley thing was cool. What you call a Caravan here in USA it is called Camper Trailer, or RV. The wine barrels were awesome & so large. Thanks again Lesley & Jordy for a great video, & see you again on many other video`s!!

  • @Elfkrystal

    What a find, this great old farmhouse, nice video. At 5:57 the large round ring may have been part of a big kettle used in brewing beer. With the small stove there for making barley into malt and the pulley system to store heavy things in the loft. Also the large barrels there make me think it was an area for brewing. Otherwise maybe the pulley system was for storing hay up in the loft for the winter. Cheers!

    I sure wish you had given another second or two, to the staircase. Been trying to reproduce an old one in 1870-1900 house in US, designed for Bavarian couple back then.
    A little more time following the route of belts from stream to attic of shed or barn. Best I can think of is water power by belts to more belts and other directions for grain, or milling. At 6:24 the thing hanging off belt drive wheels, that kinda resembles a crutch arm or bicycle fender piece, is how you remove power or switch transmission (drives to accessories) on most belt driven mills, whether powered by water or electricity.Between the two big wheels is a smaller one to take the belt drive either up to next floor or down to another floor. Worked briefly 2years in old water wheel powered wood mill for furniture and lumber. If the last shed is the same one as the 4th floor crane, best guess it was originally a barn for livestock/horses/car (older than 50 year old bldg), the name for crane in US would be hay elevator, 4th floor could be hay or grain storage in 1900's time period.

  • @abart2056
    @abart2056 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Beautiful job on showing and commentating on the interiors of the old buildings. The large metal ring inside the shed may have been a way to bring water into the house with a pump. Also when wells go dry, they will try to dig deeper to reach lower ground water supplies. After you film these, do you ever consider asking the owners to sell any of the items that you show? Some of the furniture like the jelly cupboard in the dining room would be a beautiful peice of useful furniture in another home. Just curious. Keep up the great work! Very well done.

    They also used to use horse hair, mixed in plaster, in between thin slats of horizontally placed wood, to insulate walls. Then, they'd also use newspaper, too; sometimes old magazines & books, & blankets, as well; but of course, usually horsehair-plaster & newspaper, bc it was cheaper, and books back in the day were valued by most. Horse hair could also be found in pillows & in brushes, for the bristles. It was cheap as well, & went further than down, (feathers). However, many ppl are allergic to horsehair, sometimes even fatally, (anaphylaxis).

    Hi guys, great job, as always. That machine we see at 5:55: I'm pretty sure that that was a "high tech" water wheel. It's hard to tell, not being able to see the area surrounding it. I'm guessing that a water stream was diverted from a local stream, and was routed into that housing, where there would've been a wheel with blades, which was turned by the flow. The view down to the stream would have been where the water was returned back to the main stream. Look up "water turbine / images" on Google.
