Each of the theme answers starts with a 2-letter acronym, that's why the theme is "letter openings". Again for VAGRANT, retired soldier = V.A., endowment = GRANT. So you can either read it as "vagrant" or as "v.a. grant". Same with "unplug" or "u.n. plug"
How can you not have heard the word aria? Not only is it a female name, but it's also the name of Cadence's grandmother in Crypt of the Necrodancer. Cadence, Melody, and Aria are all music puns (as are the names of many things in that game) Arias are usually associated with opera, but they don't have to be.
