  • Join us as we gather the biggest black turban snails we've ever seen and make a Japanese street food called Takoyaki. We replaced the Tako (octopus) with easily found and gathered sea snails and the resulting dish was absolutely incredible!!!!!!!!!

    Years ago I rented an apartment on Mission Bay for two months while working away from home. Snorkeled almost every day in the shallow eel grass beds of Mission bay. Octopus were everywhere. They lived in holes down in the sand. If you get a chance give that a try.

      Thanks! The OG recipe vid link is in the description. Those guys can walk you through the whole process. It was quite easy and absolutely delicious. Even better, tegula are typically safe to eat year round and easy enough to forage that even little kids can do it, so it makes this "tako"yaki accessible to pretty much anyone. Check your local Asian foods store for the takoyaki pan or you can likely find one online. Diane said they were so good that she's been dreaming about them ever since! • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      None that I can think of, though I would not gather right around where the boats moor in a harbor. They are very low trophic feeders so they tend not to bioaccumulate toxins like many other species. Good luck and enjoy!

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on where they are harvested. If they are not in the sand but high on the rock, they tend to only have fine sands in the gut. The meat can easily be rinsed in saltwater.

      Octopus are incredibly intelligent but also an incredibly sustainable subsistence resource with such fast life histories. They can grow to full maturity in a matter of months. I guess that the turban snails are algae grazers rather than filter feeders like mussels and clams. That should mean they don't get a build-up of bio-toxins in their tissues, though I'm not a marine biologist by training, so can't say for certain. I guess any restrictions placed on gathering them would be as a result of population conservation, rather than as a result of health hazards...

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct! Every once in a blue moon there are toxic plankton blooms so bad that they even kill fish and mollusks like snails. These occurrences are very rare, but I suppose they could be toxic during such a serious bloom. I always call the Biotoxin Hotline 800-553-4133 first just in case of strange super blooms, but 99.9% of the time these algae eaters are safe. Thanks for watching!
