  • Evan from Evan's detailing and polishing breaks down two different methods on how to sand aluminum. Both rotary and da or orbital method are shown in this video on both aluminum wheels and aluminum tanks. These sanding methods will also work well on stainless steel but lubrication should be used on stainless to prevent the breakdown of the sandpaper. Hope you find this video helpful and hope you check out more of our great videos.

    I just did a junk yard wheel today to practice.
    I used a da and started at 80 grit!
    After I acid washed the wheel.
    Worked it all the way to 220.
    Then heavy cut and then polish.
    Took 4 hours for both sides of one wheel.
    After seeing this, I need to get the orbital sander. Looks like it took way more off way faster then the DA.
    The heavy pitting on the bolt holes took forever.
    Thanks for sharing sir. U make it look easy.

    Can you comment on the Alcoa coating on these wheels ? Can I cut and polish the coating they use or do I need to sand the coating off ? These are 5 yr old never polished before and pretty dull. If you're sanding off the coating, what grit are you using ? Ive experimented with 150grit on a DA/orbital and it's not effective. Polishing the coating turns it yellow from the heat.

    • @EvanStegerMetalPolishing

    hellooo, bit of a smart arse comment, but I think the break drum couldn’t sit directly on that outside of the rim. If it was used as steer, the drum sits inside, same for a lazy axle single. For twin wheels on the inner side where the drum sits inside like on the front, the outer wheel is turned around, and here both twins sit ‘face to face’. No break drum … just nuts

    Whay not use aluminum asid cleaner first to remove most of the oxidation

      I'm not a fan of acid. Check out my video on acid. I really do not like it. It does more damage than good and if you are sanding you'll take off more than what the acid cleaned anyways so you are just wasting money on the acid.

    Hey Evan. I have a question. Did u ever do polish Sandcast Aluminium?
    Like Nathan Airchime horns. Got one that i'd like to shine up a bit. Is there any difference to "normal" alumimium Tanks e.g. ?

    • @EvanStegerMetalPolishing
      @EvanStegerMetalPolishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sand cast is very different. Lots of sanding and some sand castings will have some air pockets and pits or holes that won't come out. As far as buffing it is very similar just more work and more heat.

      @@EvanStegerMetalPolishing Thanks for the answer. Except for one Bell they are in a relatively good shape, no holes or pits. I Think theres not too much sanding needed. I'll try it out and See what i can get. Take care.

      Could be a whole list of reasons why this could happen. If you wanna send pics to my cell 9209790386 I can try to help diagnose the issue. Sometimes it is a sandpaper or sander issue. Sometimes it is a user error moving too fast with the sander. Send pics and I will try to help.

    Why not hit it with acid first to get rid of the oxidation and scaling?

    • @EvanStegerMetalPolishing
      @EvanStegerMetalPolishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don’t like using acid. It tends to dry out the aluminum making more sanding work.

    The first thing at everything you do should be safety why don't you wear your mask man? I'm sure you have family who wants you to live a long time it aggravates me when i see this he knows it's bad for him but he don't care. By the way I'm a fan of your videos I think you have a nice talent to polish .

      I always wear a respirator. I don't sometimes during these videos but when I'm working in my shop or on the road I never polish without a respirator. It is very dangerous and should always have a respirator on.

    You should be wearing a mask when doing that stuff. You should remove the draw strings on your hoodie, they can get tangled in you ripped paper and cut off circulation to your brain.

    I wanna know why the new husky pneumatic rotary sander has Diablo pads that don't stick.
    I thought getting a pneumatic would be like my crap hyper tough velcro style and it's not.
    Start sanding and the Diablo pads just fly right off, that's after peeling the backing off to "stick" to the pad lol

    • @EvanStegerMetalPolishing
      @EvanStegerMetalPolishing  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I only use velcro. Working in a dust filled dirty shop doesn't do well with sticky back sand paper. Plus diablo paper is less than ideal for aluminum. It can be used on it as that is what it says on the box. But it isn't made for working on aluminum that needs polished.
