Argentina suffered decades under a fascist regulatory state, we don't need that anymore, we need economic freedom. Even with regulations gentrification can happen, or what? Are you going to deny a right to a resident? If he or she wants to buy an apartment and live there you can't be so fascist and authoritarian to forbid that and if you put lots of ridiculous building restrictions and regulations and forbid the sell of the US Dollar in a dollarised market like in Argentina you'll be breaking a whole economic engine which is construction and no matter what you do real estate prices will go up for a while because there aren't new buildings being built and until no-one can buy anything because no one has dollars to buy one and there is when the prices will go down and even so nobody will have the dollars to buy

You clearly didn't get an experts opinion. This guy does not know what he is talking about. Argentina's problems didn't start with President Macri, but much before. We are dragging a problem that started in the 1970's and never ended. Its a much more complex problem that has multiple causes and repercutions. But one of the worst problems is political corruption that makes imposible to get out of the vicious circle in which Argentina is trapped.

Most people that voted for Milei (me included) understands that change is not something you achieve easily or quickly. Most of what Nicolas is telling you is an over-simplification of Milei's policies, and no, education and healthcare budgets weren't cut where they matter. Keep in mind that the opposition Nicolas supports is the exact same people that put us in this situation to start with, so you don't want them back.

The problem is your friend has a very clear bias towards a particular political sector (a.k.a. the Kirchners), so his whole explanation is useless. He literally says they did everything right and everyone else did everything wrong. His knowledge of the economy is very, very poor. The Kirchners were the source of the current economic debacle (especially Cristina). Sure, they paid the whole IMF debt, but the spent all of the Central Bank's reserves and after that, they started printing money even though anyone with basic economic knowledge will know that causes inflation. And not only that, but their governments were plagued by corruption scandals and many other shady dealings (like manipulating the inflation statistics or not reporting poverty statistics when the economy started to go south). And yet your friend doesn't say anything at all about that. And he also says that the current government is doing everything wrong when most serious economists, both local and international, agree in that he's taking the necessary steps to put the economy back on track after the disaster left over from the previous administrations.

Hi Travis, almost everything Nicolás said is either wrong or misleading. I can name three examples without needing much explanation:
    1) "Everything started with the debt that Macri...". He conveniently forgot to mention that Argentina hasn't seen economic growth since 2011 (Cristina Kirchner).
    2) "The Kirchners paid off all the debt." "That’s true but, it’s important to consider that this payment represented less than 8% of the country’s external debt. It was possible not because of the Kirchners' management of the economy but due to the exponential rise in commodity prices globally, especially soy. The extra income motivated the Kirchners to pursue monetary policies that, when commodity prices fell, left a financial deficit they were never able to resolve."
    3) "Argentina had the highest salary in Latin America in dollar terms." This is misleading because, while it's true that if you look it up, you'll see that we had the highest salary, it’s only if you use the official exchange rate as a reference (which, as you know, was not freely accessible, with limits on how much one could buy). This rate doesn’t reflect the real value of the dollar.
These are just three examples, but I could mention many more, especially when he talks about the new president. In that case, he outright omits key facts. If you ask him "why?" twice on the same topic, he either doesn't know the answer, or the answer is "because it’s a problem created by the previous administration or the Kirchnerist political line."

Some interesting questions you raise here. And having your friend come in and talk about Argentina clears up a lot for people who don’t have any idea what’s going on there or in most places. As you know, I’ve been following you since your Yucatan days. I think what I learned from you were insights and a different perspective on places that I was familiar with even when I speak the language. It holds true with other bloggers I follow. I don’t travel as far and wide as I once did. You are adding to the economy because you were spending money there. The naysayers on social media are almost amusing in the depth of their ignorance. I'm not sure travelers as in short stays are going to affect prices overall, the fact of traveling does increase people doing Airbnb instead of long term affordable rentals tho, that's going to be everywhere you go if a government or city doesn't regulate it. People like to think nobody outside of their north American or western European have money, but lots of people in Latin American countries aren't just well off they are filthy stinking rich. Big houses, malls and fancy restaurants aren't priced for foreign travelers, they are priced for the wealthy citizens

    Travis,
I feel confident that You're aware that gentrification is caused, in part, by corporate owned short-term rentals listed on AirB$B, VRBO, etc, escalating real estate prices in older urban intown neighborhoods.
The short-term rentals is not new. In fact, it is a hybrid of the former Boarding Houses of earlier eras that enabled many grandparents, or widows to afford to stay in the 2-story, 4/5br, 2/3ba homes they raised their family.
The prudent solution, as I see it, is to limit short-term rentals to Single-family, Owner-OCCUPIED residences.
Exempt these "Boarding Houses" from local zoning laws, and keep the property tax as a Single-family residence.
Not only would this maintain the cohesiveness of the neighborhood, but, it help stabilize property values.
    It worked for generations.
    What say, ye?

I go to Europe often..went to the US for the first time last year and honestly I do not see or feel anything that would make me quit living in BA and move to..I dont know..Berlin, Paris or LA. Actuslly, I found this city better in many aspects. To start with cleanliness and social cohesion. In spite of the crisis you dont see as many homeless people, sketchy characters, people completely on drugs on many streets etc. There was some feeling of "decademce" in some places, which is worse than just an economic crisis that sooner or later will end. I dont know if this decadence has to do with some complacency from people from Western Europe or the US (thinking they are already too rich and therefore nothing can change that) or out of control migration that is changing the social fabric, but you can feel it.

With due respect, you need to interview someone who has a minimal level of education and understanding of the country's problems, instead of a person who just repeats things he sees and hears without understand causal effect and root cause behind all of that. Milei inherited a country with -15% of fiscal deficit when you count the treasury + central bank finances.....-15%!!!!! And that huge hole in the accounts was being filled by reckless money printing (given that absolutely nobody was willing to lend money to such reckless administration....) which led to a 271% of annual inflation in 2023....and accelerating dangerously fast when Milei took office in December....bringing the country to the verge of hyperinflation meltdown .....which would have been a catastrophic scenario bringing over 90% of people into poverty.......so Milei had to take a very radical shift in economic policy making a dramatic adjustment in spending to eliminate the deficit and balance the accounts immediately, and he said that very clearly both in the campaign and at his inauguration, and all along since, because that was the only way to avoid disaster.....and he said that this was going to very tough and that poverty would be increased, same with unemployment and other social trends....in the short term....and we are still in the short term...it is only 6 months + since he started......2025 will be a different year where all the hardship the country is going through will start paying off.....because when you cut money printing you bring inflation under control....when you bring inflation under control....salaries gradually start strengthening in real terms....and very importantly.....credit lending start flowing in the banking system....something not seen in Argentina since 2017.......due to the inflation problem......and plus once the bill to be passed by congress in the next days comes into effect then big investment will start to kick in as this bills provides legal certainty and tax incentives for big investment to flow into the country......in summary.....the situation is awful because the last administration left literally an atomic bomb just about to explore in the country.....and Milei had to take extreme measures to prevent that from happening.....it would be good that this man talks about the fact that for the presidential campaign, the minster for finance and candidate for the presidency that Milei defeated, spent the equivalent of 3% of the GDP (in a country with -15% deficit!!!!) to win votes and try to win the election....that is the level of recklessness, irresponsibility and evil the previous government had....and now the whole country is paying for that "party"....it would be good the interviewer learns a little more then truth!!!

Great video. Just a few points to mention. The easy answer to the question of whether it is ok to travel here would be yes. Is always great to have tourists in our country and we Argentinians are very happy to have people here, we are proud of our country, we are proud of our people, and our culture, and we want to share it with the world. Now, one thing travelers must think about is how you travel and live here if you wish. Something not mentioned in this video is the exchange rate. A lot of tourists/TH-camrs/digital nomads know that the unofficial exchange rate is very very convenient for foreigners, you can get up to 60% more pesos for each us dollar at an unofficial exchange rate. So yeah, is easy to come here and live like a king with 2000 USD a month. Your rent will be half the price of your country, you will live in a nicer neighborhood, and you can get amazing dinners for 40-80 USD. But most Argentinians don't make more than 400-500 USD a month, they can't pay rent above 300 USD a month, and they have to live with 100 to 200 USD a month for groceries and services. They don't go out to eat, they drink cheap wine and eat cheap meat. What is great about this country is that even the cheapest wine and cheapest meat are greater than most countries. Try to live with the average salary or even double the salary of an average Argentinian, and you will know how we struggle to progress in this country. Also, this is not a problem of one government or another. This is a problem of all past governments, full of corruption and bad decisions. That story told by the tour guide is very one-sided, although I agree with some things that he said. In the case of Buenos Aires, mostly CABA is a bubble. And neighborhoods like Palermo, Belgrano, Recoleta, etc, are bubbles of a bubble. Most people that live there earn pretty high above the average income in Argentina, so yeah, is pretty nice to walk around there, and have dinner from time to time there. But average people, don't live there, they live 2 hours apart on public transportation, and a lot of them have to commute 4 hours a day just to work and earn something that isn't a shit salary. So next time someone comes here, think about how little your waiter is earning (200-300 USD a month usually) to make your 40-50 dollar meal affordable. Think about how many people don't know what a 10usd wine tastes like. Enjoy our country, enjoy our people, enjoy our food and culture. But don't stay in the bubble, we who live outside that bubble, sometimes live even happier and nicer outside of the bubble. That's the secret of why Argentinian people are really nice, humble and happy. The waiter that serves you that nice wasn't born in Palermo or Recoleta, they probably were born in another province. There is a lot more Argentina than the one shown in most of the videos. Thank you for making these videos and coming.

The answer is simple, no. You are not creating any problems. And even if ZERO foreigners go to a country, some areas in some cities will be "gentrified" anyways. Not everyone can live in Palermo or Belgrano R in Buenos Aires or Brickell in Miami or Chelsea in London. Its just the way it is. And rent is a problem in all major cities where many people wanna live. Most cities have other areas that are still nice and cheaper and also areas close by but outside the city. And as for prices, some areas will always be very expensive, that didnt start now and will never go away.

Hello, I am so glad you are enjoying our country. But let's get straight to the point.
When I saw that you were going to talk to an Argentinian who was going to explain the problems of the country.... Well, I got worried.
You said it was someone who did tours, I got more worried. You said he was an anthropology professor, and I got even more worried. 🤣
I quickly confirmed my fears... you talked to a representative of the Argentine “left”. So, everything he told you, is wrong.
According to them, all the country's problems are due to “the damn right”. And they put you Macri as guilty of EVERYTHING... when he only governed for one term.
But they forget to say that they, the “left”, ruled the country for almost 80 years. But of course... Macri is to blame for everything. And now Milei.

And public universities in that city are like the most biased places ever to be in, so if you really want to get in touch with reality going to someone who's an academic on anthropology on the UBA living in Palermo is not really the best strat to break out of that bubble. you got an absulutely biased guy making all the wrong diagnostic about the current situation in Argentina. He basically says that the leftist government of Kirchner did everything fairly well…. Absolutely misleading. The first governemt of kirchner was able to stabilize the country, but decadence started with the second government of Kirchner in 2008. The REAL reason of the argentinian drama is much more simple. It is a country that for decades, has been spending more that what they collect. Just simple as that. And if you spend more than what you colllect, the only way to finance yourself is: 1. either getting more and more debt 2. or printing money (which leads to hyperinflation). The country is broken and Milei had to cut spending. The country has in 6 months achieved fiscal balance. Leftist are very unhappy because of this because they have been used to have a lot of free social benefits. But the sad true is that there is no other way.

i hope you ve been enjoying our Country!
The anthropologist you saw seems to me to have a more left-wing tendency, that is, he supports Kirchnerism, which is what created the disaster, not Macri. This disaster began in 2011 when Cristina Kirchner wanted to go above the institutions and remain in power forever. The economy reacted badly and she put a trap for the purchase of dollars that ruined many sectors that we depended on and are fundamental as is the purchase. housing and the place where Argentines save. All because in 2007 Nestor Kirchner fired the economy minister "Lavagna" who had a more traditional plan and who was the one who truly got us out of the crisis of 2001. Our problem was that they tried to establish 21st century socialism in Argentina, Macri's debt was not my cause, but a remedy for what was happening at that time. And the crisis of 2001 was caused by the theft of money from the Peronist political party 1 to 1, which was a solution to our problems with inflation and generated wealth that did not exist, and because it changed from a mostly status system to a private one. , they don't usually tell that. So the crisis in which a president resigned in 2001 was actually a civil coup d'état caused by Peronists. Cristina Kirchner put us in debt, but by "stealing" the money from retirees and Argentines, she increased much more than the debt with Macri. It's good to hear all the bells.
    Greetings from Argentina
    --‐-------

From Argentina here. Totally agree with Nicolas' points of view. It's exactly as he says. Those who don't agree with him are Milei's voters. Argentina is a very rich country, its wealth is just badly distributed. We need a left-wing government to put the country upside down and get ahold of the main sources of income of the country. Huge private companies local and from abroad are now in power with Milei and they will only reap the benefits from our natural resources and leave nothing but devastation.

    contrary to what was stated:
A typical middle class neighborhood is Palermo, and around 80% of both the city and the metropolitan area (17M inhabitants) have a quality of life similar or higher than Palermo.

Argentina hasn't grow since 2011 and has continuosly run fiscal deficits since 2009. a GDP growth rate of just 1,8 per cent over the past half century. with OUR president MILEI economic activity rose 1.3 percent from April, above the 0.1 percent. Argentina is officialy out of recession after 7 months of Javier Milei's economic reforms after being in recession since a half a year before he got into office. Milei came in to wipe out all the dirty that the Kichneristas and Peronistas has done to this country for over 60 years, and we are witnessing it on the street and our life.

A couple of things to keep in mind. He's hiding a LOT of facts. Milei took office with an insane amount of debt (treasury), central bank debt, and unpaid bills from the previous government (w vice president Kirchner). Also "highest minimum wage" (not even close to hihgest average wage) whilst having a growing unregistered workforce that reached more than 50% so a lot of people weren't guaranteed anything with that minimum wage. I'm not saying milei is the way to go but this guy is clearly biased.
