Back in 1977 Eddie Lawson, already a dirt track star, decided to go road racing. He showed up at a club race at Willow Springs with his TZ 250 and was told he had to participate in the "rookie" orientation session before he could actually enter and race. He didn't complain, he duct taped a big square on the back of his leathers like all the other newbies, myself included, and off we went. The session lasted about 20 minutes. He lapped me and my GS 750 at least four times. Always gave me plenty of room. What a gentleman and what a champion.
Awesome memory, I remember being lapped at Road Atlanta WERA GNF in 85’ by John Kocinski. John was on a TZ250 as an expert and I was on a 500 interceptor as a novice.
That is an awesome memory. we assume you tell anyone who'll listen that you raced against a four-time 500cc world champion, because we definitely would!
Racing is about technology. Look at the 50cc championship 4 stroke vs 2 stroke. It does get tremendously expensive, but eventually the lessons learned trickle down to the mortals.
The sound of it is intoxicating. I remember watching Lawson battling it out live with Spencer & some Japanese guys at Batu 3, Shah Alam. Then Doohan, Gardner, Mamola before they closed the circuit & change venue to Sepang. The sound, smell, heat & the speed of it was no compare what we see in youtube. Ferrrghh....
I remember my Dad taking me to Donington Park in 93 and 94. The smell of 2 strokes, I remember Schwantz sliding it down Craner curves leaving black lines and tyre smoke. One lap he looked like he was riding a wild bull by the way his bike was bucking. Now the bikes are like 2 wheeled F1 cars, they all ride the same and are perfect every time.
@@kakikurakura7921 Yeah it was. I remember going there I can’t really if it was 95 or 96 both Rainey and Schwantz had already stopped racing and Doohan won by miles. It was like watching a 500 race a grid full of 250’s. The only other person I’ve seen win by such a distance was Stoner in 2007.

The technology on bikes these days is unbelievable. A small four stroke allows engineers to optimise efficiency and it doesn't burn oil, and it has a wide torque range which makes a high horsepower bike easier to ride.
At 50 seconds he sits up pulls his left hand from the bar and takes a look backwards. At racing speeds on a 500 two stroke road racer. He is still The Doctor.
The season between the two and four stroke transition was a fun one to watch. The 500cc two strokes vs the 990 four strokes on the track together. All the different engine designs that seems to materialize over night was so cool.
Can you imagine riding a large bore factory built 2 stroke ? I have ridden a few Kawasaki and Suzuki triples with minor modifications like pipes , jetting, tires , clip ons that scared the bejesus out of me . Crazy !

One of our Yamaha Press Officers was at the Indy Mile that year. We were all expecting Vale to spin a few laps after King Kenny, but he (probably wisely) politely declined after seeing Kenny sideways on every lap! 😁
Awesome. I miss the 2 stroke 500's. Frightening power delivery and no electronics. Note at 2:10 he lifts his bum up, just in case there's any doubt about who 'The Man' on that bike is 🙂
MotoGP should re-introduce 2-strokes to compete in the class. Viewership interest would be HUGE. Updating 2 strokes with modern advancements in engine management systems, tires and suspension would be very interesting- and exciting. Given so many years, perhaps a temporary increase in displacement to 600cc max.
