Your points are completely valid and most importantly, you nailed it in that you have to just allow the movie to unfold without your expectations. There are these shots that take the viewer out of their comfort zone of crossing a line I think of bad judgment, time and again. It all started with her walking into the house after being invited in and the point of no return is when she goes back into the basement to go after Skarsgard. It’s almost like the director was taunting us by saying “I know what you think everyone would do but tough sh*t, this is all going to go very badly”. And when you accept that, it kind of just leaves all logic by the wayside for the rest of the film. For me, I drew the most enjoyment from the tension is not knowing what’s around the next corner in the dark and every time it was worse than I expected. It was just like a slow walk through a really horrifying haunted house. Shoutout to Justin Long, when he was measuring the tunnels to see how much extra square footage he could get for the sale of his house, I was dying laughing. He was such a POS but so shameless and funny LMFAOOOOO

30:15 - I didn't notice there was an extra door in my bathroom (opening up to the hot water tank) until I had lived at my house for several months. It happened to look like a wall, and then one day it just popped open.

You guys make some great points 'cause that's how I felt about a lot of it as well. Oh and Keith's character insisting on going into the basement, made me think "oh, he's luring her back in, or at least that's the subverted expectation the director wants you to think". The cops scene made me shake my head (fuuuuuck!). Also, the homeless guy making the statement, "she's (the mother) just the beginning, there's worse things out there or involved" or whatever the line was,. Unless he was referring to Frank's character, I was hoping for more inbred "kids" or something like that. I feel a missed opportunity was there at the very end, when she was walking away from the "lady" and AJ before the end credits on that dark street. All those other houses or vacant lots in the darkness could have had little glowing or reflected eyes and the sounds of little kids voices/laughter or mutant baby cries and then she knows she's in deep shit and you see her scared expression and the scene cuts to black then. Great video as always guys.

Hello Jason and Kali. I have stumbled upon another "He Said, She Said" debate. (Perhaps this happens more often on the channel than I initially realized. ) Kali, I dig your capacity for empathy. Also, like you, I was able to watch "Barbarian" without any lapses in logic throwing me out of the story. (It's possible the twists distracted me.) Jason, the first time I encountered the term "suspension of disbelief" was watching the movie, "Basic Instinct," a hundred years ago. On the way to the police station (as well as the infamous interrogation scene) Catharine Tramell explains the idea to the detectives. I wouldn't refute your observations. in fact, your attention to detail reminds me of one of my mentors in graduate school. Anytime any of us fiction writers put a story through the workshop for critique, he often focused on logic and logistics. In retrospect, I'm grateful for his attention to detail, and I think fiction writers (screen writers, too) should, at the very least, know when they are asking readers to suspend their disbelief, and to what degree, then ask themselves if doing so is worth the risk of losing and/or insulting readers/audiences.

My issues are: the double booking of the house was what just a ploy to get 2 ppl in the same house and build suspense and misdirection? How and why was never explained. Also the doors closing on their own. I was thinking oh maybe a ghost or demon. I guess she can close doors from way under the house? Also Tess likely wouldn't have been able to get up and walk away after a fall like that. I think the dad kidnapping women would have made for a more interesting movie, that sequence was great but we had to get dialogue to further explain it. They could have shown it

I thought, hmmmmmm wonder what that means and I thought it would be revealed LATER. I thought maybe they were in on it, sending people to be sacrificed, SOMETHING.... But nope! I was really into it until Keith died. Tess and Keith were so likable - I honestly could’ve watched a whole movie with just the two of them. After Keith’s death, the story lost some of its charm. The double booking of the Airbnb was odd and never explained, and it felt strange that the monster didn’t go after Keith and Tess sooner. Although it was still a decent one-time watch, there were definitely a few plot holes that took away from the overall experience.

Best spoiler explanation video I've watched, because you both were able to help me see both sides of the divide while others influence you to be either totally for or against the film. My interpretation of the bad decisions the characters were making is that it's supposed to have an affect on the audience that sparks conversation and debate about whether you approach fear and bad situations with logic or intuition or through selfishness or selflessness; and the social commentary is that men will be more logical and selfish, while women will be more intuition and selfless. But aside from that i thought you both had valid points. I liked your commentary on the baby bottle/breast feeding scene. In my opinion, that was the most the most effective scene because the idea should be dumb and silly, and had it been put in the context of a real B-movie horror flick, then it would be just stupid and over-the-top. But Georgina and Justin's straight acting in the scene made it believable that it's supposed to be scary and uncomfortable rather than funny and campy.

You have one of the best takes on this subject/movie. Every horror movie is contrived...but this movie takes it too far too many times. Everything that propels the plot is a contrivance. The movie was entertaining because of the acting and sometimes yelling at the movie is a genre unto itself. However, it would have been nice to see the same movie... with the intelligence turned way up and clever happenings driving them deeper into trouble. Or if the movie had the courage to hypothesize an ending with AJ actually being a victim of hearsay. (Because that happens sometimes too)

Just watched this last night and thought it was good, but, definitely did not live up to the hype. As far as the double booking it appears that the owner’s property manager had the house listed with multiple rental services which each one of them had secured the rental from. The homeless guy said he had lived there for 15 years so it would be possible that he had seen the rapist/kidnapper bringing victims into the house or recapturing some who had escaped. A lot of times there are multiple people in an area that know bad things are happening, but, will say nothing because they don’t want to get involved or don’t think they will be believed.

I know people are going to have a problem with the cops especially if you don't keep up with the news. If you do keep up with the news and know of things like the cops ignore the serial killer, cops bringing victims to serial killers, cops that mistakenly shot the kidnap victim and others cases like that then you might think the cops in this movie weren't dumb enough.

Jason dismissing or overlooking the fact that it's set in one of the worst areas of Detroit is a big reason he didn't understand most of the film. If you have any idea how bad parts of Detroit are, a lot of things make more sense.

It’s always how the material is presented. People think horror is just some throwaway genre that is filled with moronic characters but that isn’t true at all. Especially nowadays. Writers have learned how to make characters smart but just making the villains or situations just a little smarter. The decisions in this film are very questionable, and it can take you out of the moment. If it didn’t for you that’s fine but it did me.

Good marketing is really where it's at. Look at Black Phone. So much hype created before release. And it turned out to be a mediocre film. Same here. So much hype talking about how amazing and unique this film is before release. But once again, it just turns out to be a film about something that's been done to some degree by other films.
SPOILER: I honestly thought this was gonna be more than just another in the long line of mutant inbred killer movies. That's it? Seriously? I thought this genre ran out of steam a while ago. The sad things is, all of them will never shock the audience as much as an episode of X-Files. Home did it better than anybody has since. Yawn. People are so desperate for good horror movies that they'll hype a tired idea just because of the people involved.

When i heard about the hype about this movie i just wanted to watch it asap and then i watched your review, because it is here that i find the best reviews and we share the same taste.
I thought f*** so it won't be this one.
    And it's not.
As you said Jason, many moments got me out of the movie because i couldn't buy them especially when the homeless man knocked on the windows like a crazy man instead of just knocking at the door and tell them to leave. i didn't understand why bill Skasgard spent so much time in the basement "visiting it" when he said 30 seconds only while Tess was waiting for just one thing : getting out of that house.
And then there were those scenes with the cops that pissed me out. But then i thought : it's in America.
I do think, like Kalee, that the filmmaker wanted to point out racism : a black girl in a creepy neighborhood, dirty and looking like a hysterical woman is a drug addict/ an old homeless black man is seen as the same and he knows that the police wouldn't care about what he would tell them. They would think he's crazy, and drunk. I was like you, and the i thought "it is in America, it is possible with black people" (sorry, i don't want to hurt any Americans, but that's what we think in Europe about black people condition).
As Kalee, the thing which has saved the movie for me, was the "women condition" subtext.
Kalee is really so sensitive and smart (she should be a psychologist, please tell her jason, i'm going to be one too),
this review is a gem to point out the both point of views about this film.

She could have just asked the cop to run the plates on her car and dispatch would confirm the identity that she was telling him. And if it was a rental, she would know it was registered to Avis or Alamo or whatever. Everyone in this movie was a bonehead, lol. Like, if the homeless dude is trying to be benevolent, why run at her screaming "HEY LITTLE GIRL!" And why is AJ even buying a rental property in skid row?
Also, I did not need to see the whole flashback scene with the old homeowner. We could have been given the backstory by evidence in the basement, exposition from homeless dude or cop, the main character googling the property, etc. Having one major narrative/tonal shift was enough. We didn't need another one that really just told us stuff that the audience would have been better off piecing together.
As for her going back to the basement to rescue Keith, I agree, but I think they were just trying to drive home the central theme of gender dynamics/differences that the two main characters discussed, specifically with how they react to scenarios

People always make fun of horror movies because the characters make stupid decisions. You would think that the film maker would have learned from them. Tunnel movies. The big thing with them for me is...they represent a cop out. The amount of work it would take to dig fucking tunnels like that would be absurd, someone would notice, it would be reported, end of story. The odd crack head or homeless person reporting it would be one thing, but the number of reports would not be something the police could ignore. Someone outside the neighbourhood would have heard about it too like, there'd be urban legends and shit about fuckin little Jimmy who went in there on a dare when no one was home and was never seen again, shit like that. And why would the tunnels have been there already, what was it built on top of ground that was used as a shelter or an asylum or something? The worst film for that for me is Law Abiding Citizen - no one noticed he had tunnels literally everywhere?! That being said, I haven't seen this movie so I don't know what the tone is, I just think "oh they had tunnels" is a bit like "oh its aliens" or "oh its a bunch of rednecks". Yeah, but where are the solutions to the problems that they would have - how would they explain the machinery doing the tunnelling, or at least the noise if they were doing it by hand, and where would they be putting the stuff they dug out?! Plus, are these people structural engineers that know exactly how to dig a fuckin tunnel that's not gonna cave in and kill them all? The amount of work that I think you have to do to justify a tunnel in a house in a movie? Forget about it. Which is a shame, the trailer looked interesting - didn't expect it to be Citizen Kane, but it looked like it could have been something in the vein of Don't Breathe or something like that. Sounds like wasted potential to me.

As someone whose also seen just about every horror movie since at least the turn of the millennium- I agree that this was a bit overhyped which I HATE because then I go into it with high expectations even when I try my hardest not to, and I inevitably end up being let down. I do oddly love most of internet driven horror lately (AirBnB can be enough - especially after Superhost) and I’m pretty good at suspending my disbelief but there were still those few moments where I was yelling at the TV. And I get it - it’s a commentary on gender roles to an extent and all that - but I still got annoyed at points, particularly by a couple of Tess’s decisions.
And since you kinda mentioned it - I have a somewhat irrelevant question. I was wondering what ‘gross out’ horror movies you’d recommend if you have a sec since you’re both gore aficionados. Plus everytime I look up a movie after watching it for others’ thoughts, which I always do, you and Fish Jelly are the two channels that ALWAYS come up - so I know we have similar tastes and knowledge. The gore factor isn’t something that I really pay much attention to, and while my sister is patiently waiting for Terrifier 2, she’s on the hunt for a movie so gross that she’ll faint 🤷‍♀️. All I could think of were the Human Centipedes and like.. Cannibal Holocaust (nothing rapey though). I trust your opinion so I was just hoping to get a couple recs from you if possible.
Thanks for always taking the time to make videos about nearly every horror movie - especially the more obscure and underrated and under-seen - even when I do disagree with your opinion from time to time 🫠✌️

I waited to watch this review since everyone said to avoid spoilers. Now I’ve seen it, and I’m conflicted. Because it feels like the movie is intentionally trying to be a pretty cynical horror-comedy. And this movie did get some great laughs in my theater. But my god, any thoughts beyond the surface absolutely shatter this movies script.
To add to your list of dumb, if that neighborhood is notoriously bad, and nobody wants to be there, how the hell did it ever get double booked? Double bookings happen, but they happen because there’s multiple requests at the same time. This place had 2 single requests in 3 weeks, did they order it at the exact same second or something?
And the homeless man said to leave because she comes out at night, which means she isn’t staying down in the tunnels all the time. What the hell is she doing at night normally before our main character arrived? And what is the “worse things” he mentioned?
