This is part of an upcoming video where we tour the Meralco Power Lab. I decided to split this off into a dedicated video because I'm asked about "power savers" so often and so many people are wasting their money on this kind of product. If you enjoyed this video please give a thumbs up and consider sharing it with your friends so they don't waste their money on these things :)
lol, I guess that's a reasonable point. I might also have my own doubts if I didn't already know the devices were a scam to start with. I might do a follow up video where I actually show the power consumption of different things with and without the "power saver" to give a clear demonstration that they really don't work. In the upcoming video of the Power Lab, we talk about LPG vs. induction stoves and like you, I want to see a demonstration comparing the two.
Buddy, what if the capacitors are BIG ENOUGH will it reduce my bill? If I got a so-called power saver with BIG capacitors like 60KW (not the plugin type but the ones connected before your circuit breaker) computed from more or less the total watts of my appliances (2,100watts) will it reduce my bill? Hope you can help me out on this. Thanks in advance.
@Bulalo - All I can add is that the system here in Pinoy land seems to be very rigged, Meralco and Pecko are ridiculous with their rates for a kilowatt. It 4 times more than in South Africa and we both 3rd world countries. This could be very broad when we talk about Electric Cars versus petrol companies . Its still a mystery why the first GM Electric Car, the EV1 was killed in 1997 or 1999, i forgot the year now.
You say that the first one you picked up, does not work. However, the one that I bought a few years ago, at Walmart, in their "As Seen on TV" section, works! My electric bill went from $259 to $139. The second month. That was 3 years ago. Since then, my highest bill has been $149. My bill this month, which we just paid, was $98! I run the air conditioner constantly, I am home most of the time, (retired), and leave the temp on 74 most of the time, winter and summer. My utility bill is higher in the winter because I have a gas heater but, my electricity bill goes down more in the winter. If it did not work for you, either you had a defective unit or you did not follow the directions. You have to plug it into the outlet on the same wall and preferably the outlet, near the outside meter. The reason I believe that my bill went down the second month is because I moved it from the lower electrical socket to the upper one, thus bringing it closer to the meter entrance. (which is what the instructions said) It worked for me and reduced my bill DRAMATICALLY!
These are scams which have unfortunately been given some legitimacy by being sold at big mall hardware stores (e.g. Ace Hardware, Handyman). DTI should penalize these stores for false claims and advertisements.
I was surprised to hear they're being sold by reputable hardware stores. That's really quite worrying. I went looking for local reviews and I notice a lot of people say things like "I feel like it's saving me money" and other non-committal statements that could be argued along the lines of "Well i never said it WILL save you money, I just said I FEEL like it might".
Gadget Addict I for one don't think of them as reputable. Their products are either low quality (made in some cheap Chinese factory with dubious quality control) or overpriced legitimate products. What they offer of value is convenience.
38 years working for the electric company in the meter department, in the field, on meters, and as an electrician. Lots of schooling. If anyone falls for this, there is a bridge in New York I want to talk to them about buying
i have one of those , on my experience it does really work , from P3,000 monthly bill down to P1,900. u r on meralco lab of course they will say it will not work.
So I know they don't really save any power but can they smooth out power at house or help with low voltage and also act as surge protector? We have like 185v to 195v here since there's a lot of user yet still the transformer installed in the neighborhood is a small one. I don't plan on buying this since it's kinda a waste of money but may I ask if they still do anything like improve electricity quality? Or they just do nothing.
It is a step down transformer with a capacitor. The voltage is lowered by 10 percent so during demo one will see that the kilowatthourmeter spins much slower since the current is reduced. But in the end it does not reduce the power consumption anyway. The power factor correction is not necessary in most residential dwelling.
Thank you I was considering giving one of these units with a larger capacitor a try as I have a pool motor running 8 hrs a day since they are cheap, however I was unaware that in a residential application my kilowatt hrs are measured in such a fashion... You guys are the best!
I have seen this before and it only works on one side of the electrical box. You have a center tap transformer going to your home. one side to center gives you 120 volt the other side to center gives you 120 volts and across the two outsides is 240. This unit only works on one side. in addition you don't want to plug things in to the wall you want to solve the issue at the electric panel because the device itself draws electricity.
This will be very helpful. Maybe you can also do vid on how much (or how little) power is wasted by keeping our electrical appliances plugged in even when not in use.
Sir. and who ever read this comment. i swear those powersavers are effective! . you may search powerfactor corrector devices. blame the product demonstrators not the device, those device are really inteded for inductive loads
You would need a much larger capacitor to correct any power factor reduction for which you are being billed. Fortunately Power companies don't usually bill residential customers for a poor power factor. Since power factor is not a problem in houses. Electric companies bill only for watts, not amps.
Yup you are right. good thing you post this kinds of videos. so that fewer people will get scammed and they will be well informed. maybe they just bit the bait because some advertisements of this products are convincing. even the fake reviews of this product from other online sellers.
It's funny you mention the fake reviews. I just looked on a popular local shopping website and noticed there's a LOT of unverified reviews which say how good these are and how they save you money. They should really just remove those non-purchaser or unverified reviews because there's too many fakes.
Exactly! They really have to remove it. it is really misleading sometimes. i almost got victimized by those non-purchaser/unverified reviews. one of it is this power savers stuff well almost.. but what can we say we all know how eye catching this benefits you will get from this product. but sadly its all fake. thanks again bro! this is a big money saver video XD
The companies who sell these make rediculous claims that these will save you 30 - 90% energy. Please do not buy them as ,besides not actually saving you anything, they contribute to plastic waste and also are responsible for energy waste in the manufacturing, transportation, storage and disposal.

I think for demonstration or some form of stats and obtaining a few to several types of devices. In terms of British Pound versus Philippines Peso it cant be expensive to buy a few different units for test or demo purpose. For the popularity and growth of this channel it would be a good idea and benefit to not only you but also the viewers.
Complete waste of money. Does not reduce kwh by one watt. Buy a "kill-a-watt" and it will show you no reduction. ( Kill-a-watt does not claim to reduce anything, but it is a good tool to show you and record the usage of electricity.)
I dont understand this either, because my friend in Malaysia says he uses it there and he has recently shipped his sister one to Philippines/Iloilo and she reckons her bill hasdropped more or less 250 pesos per month. I am not sure now.... I guess i can try and test m, but yes not sure about wasting a buying the wrong item. I also am not sure what device to buy because i see there are different ratings....
Thanks for the video, but I was told, increasing current can reduce wattage...It's like a 1/2 hp 110 volt motor drawing 10 amps will draw 5 amps if it's a 220 volt and same HP...I too, think it's a scam, know what capacitors do, but understand what they're trying to do...Increase voltage, reduced wattage...To bad, it just isn't feasible.
Watts is the amps multiplied by the volts (W=iR) - so if either amps or volts goes up, watts must go up. For wattage to drop, one or the other - or both - have to drop. And since wattage is simply a measurement of power (1 hp = 745.7 watts), dropping the watts is the same as saying you're dropping the hp - it means whatever you're using is not as powerful - weaker motor, dimmer lights, etc. In your example, your motor uses 1100 watts, regardless of whether it's 220v x 5A, or 110v x 10A. There's no free lunch.
I does not agree, you have to look deeper at the matter, the power factor capacitor correct the sinus wave of your of your current, if you sinus wave is not nice and smooth your applainces will draw more energy in order to do what they have to do. Kw=Voltage* Current if your current is high your Kw usage will be high, because of the power correction your applainces need less energy (KwH) to do the same work.
Power factor correction for industrial premises makes sense, when done properly - not with the tiny little capacitors that you find in many of the "power saving" devices sold to regular people. For residential customers, the power companies are not looking at power factor, so it's irrelevant and won't save you money on your bill. These so-called "power savers" have already been busted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, as well as countless other credible sources.
Exactly, this video is not really demonstrative enough , there is content missing here. Perhaps there are devices that are useless, but there are probably units that do work. In theory i can not understand how it works. I do have 2 reliable individuals that have told me it works for them so because of this i am keen to find out more.
whoa. where is that located? here in ortigas? i want to know more about inverter ac and refs. need to guage how much solar setup i need to add in my project.. plus im planning to convert one of conventional ac to inverter type using dc 24v/48v inverter compressors though i can only buy that online..
Yep, the huge compound next to medical city :) In my upcoming video we talk a little about inverter type refrigerators and how they're cheaper to run, but we didn't go into a lot of detail. Perhaps that's a good excuse to go back and discuss it more... while playing with some of their gadgets :P They're actually testing a 'residential sized' solar setup with battery storage. That's also something that might warrant more detail in a separate video. If you happen to convert your AC, please make a video about that, I'd love to see how it's done!
Most modern appliances are highly efficient nowadays. That means your almost operating at unity power factor and almost no more power factor (P.F.) to correct, if there is some it is almost negligible. Power Factor correction is only used in industrial application were loads are highly inductive. Power has three (3) components, Watts - which is the useful power, Volt-Amps-Reactive (VAR) which is due to the characteristic of your load whether it's inductive or capacitive, Volt-Amp (VA) which is the total power delivered (Watts + VAR) but only the Watt is useful and the VAR is due to the losses in the system.
He spoke non-sense. Electric power is equal to voltage times the current. If current goes down with fixed voltage, definitely power(watt or kw) goes down, too.
Hi Guys. I'm not sure how it really works though but it help me reduce around 15% on my monthly bill. I'm using 2 aircon units so it's still significant - i'd say. I probably have to stay neutral on this
Bottom line is they do not work and if voltage goes up, like 220 vs 110 motor, the wattage used by most motors goes down, along with the amp draw.....If they draw less amps, they use less wattage....Period...So, It's cheaper to run a 220 motor, than a 110 volt motor....Twice the voltage, half the amps.
I'm now wishing we did a hands on demonstration to show what these things do and why it doesn't save you money. A practical demonstration. Perhaps that's something we can do in the future :) I really don't want to buy one myself just to demo it.
so what is the better way to gain cheaper electricity like our neighboring countries??? did the phils electric companies really care for the consumer??
This video goes into more detail about why power savers cannot save you money if you're a residential customer - th-cam.com/video/GX_aTnkY79s/w-d-xo.html
Gadget Addict I did not say that power savers are true or not, what I'm saying is, when current is low then power is low, P=VI(pf). so basically this guy does not know what he says.
It DOES SAVE power. I tested it by myself I am saving 12%. Yes it does not reduce import bill but It will safe generated energy wich IS COUNTED in KVAh and not in KWh. So it works.
@@hankkline7300 Well it increases the power factor (You can find what it is by typing "power factor" in youtube). So when you are selling the energy and consuming part of it at the same time, part of your energy is lost due to weak power factor, so you sell less energy to the line.
If you are being penalized for 85% power factor, this product will help you. If not, it will only help the people selling this product. How does it "SAFE" I think they mean SAVE, generated energy?
I also have one of these (the red one) and I must say, even for a man of science, that it works. Been using it for YEARS, ever since meralco successfully banned the sale of these in stores. 8k was my usual bill. First 3 mos actually had no difference yet. but after that, I saw a decline. Until now ive been enjoying around 5 to 6k of bill, give or take, whether meralco increased their peso per kwh or, if we added more appliances.. In the end I would say that it's a "hit or miss" thing. It might not work for others, but it definitley worked for some of us here. So if you have extra cash, then it wouldnt hurt to try these for yourselves..
If an electricity bill has "declined" it is factually because of something else ...and absolutely NOTHING to do with any "power saver". Anyone who submits any kind of "claim" that these devices work ....is either intentionally lying for some reason, or they genuinely have no idea what they are talking about ....particularly if their electricity bill has indeed gone down. To use one very simple example, based on the seasons, lighting cost might be higher due to early sunset, or air conditioners and fridges might be in high use in hot weather ....so to account for any kind of "electrical savings", a person would need to accurately monitor ALL these factors over a period of several years BEFORE plugging in any of these devices. The point being, an ACCURATE ACCOUNTING of electricity use MUST be known before plugging these devices in. WHO IS GOING TO DO THIS? The honest answer is NO ONE IS EVER GOING TO DO THIS .....unless they keep all there electricity records and do calculations against the historical weather conditions in their area. IF they can obtain this information ...THEN ...they would have to plug in this device(s) and then document the results over several years to obtain ACCURATE RESULTS. ONLY THEN CAN ANYONE COMPARE THE NUMBERS AND DETERMINE IF THERE HAVE BEEN ANY SAVINGS OR NOT. You CANNOT obtain information for a household bill over a one-day period ......nor can anyone say they have been "using it for years" without providing the details of HOW this claim has been determined.
Yeah, about that - the FOX News thing, as well as the Elon Musk endorsement of the product, are as one might suspect - pure scam fiction. Neither FOX nor Elon have anything to do with this product...but don't expect them to sue someone in China for using their name and likeness any time soon.
It has been tested and proven thousands of times, by thousands of people. You can find countless videos on TH-cam that breakdown the reality of "power savers" being sold to residential customers.
I had considered reviewing that or similar products but there's already quite a few videos on TH-cam where people use caged rodents and other creatures and show they don']t appear to be effected by the device. It's a harder one to test but from what I've seen, those devices don't work.
Hopefully people can share this with anyone who's considering buying one of these so called 'power savers'. I have a much longer video coming soon which looks at everything they're doing in the Meralco Power Lab. But I shared this first because I think it warrants it's own video.
That's a thing? I've never heard of that before! Sounds a bit crazy lol. In the UK they will heavily fine you if they suspect you tampered with the meter. In fact I think it's considered a criminal offense. I don't know if it's the same here. Although most homes in the UK are using 'Smart' meters now instead of the old analog ones.
hahaha well its not tampering.. the box generates addtional frequency ofset of the 60hz causing the plates to rattle and to move slow.. its like magnetic braking.. thats why they dont supply analogs anymore. i also remember the old trick back then.. using ants to stop or to slow down the disc rotations
well meters here uses ge 210 directional meters.. its just a basic watt meter with ir signal reader for special use. most residential uses those meters. and the orange tagged meters are for kuryente load. somewhat smart meters that they can remotely cut off your supply if you ran out of load. and they can get your readings remotely unlike the other one, meterman needs to check it every 22nd of the month for readout
You're welcome :) I'm glad they had all those "power savers" in the Meralco Power Lab so I could make this video! I'm also glad that Meralco are taking these initiatives to educate consumers on how to get the most out of their money.

I fell for this and purchased five. Can't find a place to return them, no address, nothing comes up for the business. FRAUD FRAUD FRAUD
There's a power saver that will work in a 3 phase circuit. 🙂
... so make one that works?
Thank you very much
They were saying 90 percent saving
Man! I was just going to buy one of these things... THANKS!
I probably have to stay neutral on this
Mind to. Very useful
Bottom line is they do not work and if voltage goes up, like 220 vs 110 motor, the wattage used by most motors goes down, along with the amp draw.....If they draw less amps, they use less wattage....Period...So, It's cheaper to run a 220 motor, than a 110 volt motor....Twice the voltage, half the amps.
well... I am not a electrical engineer but only a technician,I can't think that anything that it will work...
I'm now wishing we did a hands on demonstration to show what these things do and why it doesn't save you money. A practical demonstration. Perhaps that's something we can do in the future :) I really don't want to buy one myself just to demo it.
Gadget Addict there are just capacitor inside it helps nothing... just a safety barrier for electricity...
im an engineer and yep there the same as just adding a capacitor if you really want to save energy buy appliances that have high efficiency
so what is the better way to gain cheaper electricity like our neighboring countries??? did the phils electric companies really care for the consumer??
One Word Answer - NO!
I'm skeptical about the guy working for meralco.
Ive seen those things few years back, someone tested it and found out that it lets you consume more electricity...lols
My father is trying to get me to order him one rn. I sent him this video
omg, same!! x
ehhh wrong, power is equal to voltage x current x power factor, kung low current low din ang power, directly proportional yan pre.
Gadget Addict KWH=VI(pf)*1000*hours so he is even wrong about KWH.
You asked the gentleman to explain and then kept interrupting him with meaningless comments. Very annoying and not helpful. Thx
Short and sweet review. No time wasted.
nope it works on us...
Great content. Keep it up!
Saw FB ad in my news feed. Glad I researched it first. Save my money. Lol Thank you
Thanks guys realy helpful short and sweet
It DOES SAVE power. I tested it by myself I am saving 12%. Yes it does not reduce import bill but It will safe generated energy wich IS COUNTED in KVAh and not in KWh. So it works.
Lol *no*
VA = watts.
How does it "SAFE" energy? Wich power companies bill in KWh so it doesn't work. My spell checker works better than this product.
When I pass by HandyMan at my local mall, I always see a man there demonstrating these so called powersavers 😂😂
I'm going to listen to one of them next time I walk by. I'm curious how they sell these.
They don't understand what they're selling. They were just trained with a spiel.
Maybe film it and upload it? I never really paid attention to them
So, what did you find out?
Short and sweet review...But this was announced it works on FOX NEWS!!
Yeah, about that - the FOX News thing, as well as the Elon Musk endorsement of the product, are as one might suspect - pure scam fiction. Neither FOX nor Elon have anything to do with this product...but don't expect them to sue someone in China for using their name and likeness any time soon.
thank you so much for this review.
Thanks for review! 👍
Di talaga ko naniniwala sa mga power savers na yan dati pa pero mas hindi ako naniniwala sa meralco lol.
no test done, no proof that it doesn't work. waste if time video.
NO!!!
Thank you for proving that my intuition was correct again I dodged another internet crap bullet
Hm poh
Hindi pa rin conclusive. Hindi ganyan ang scientific method.
Actual testing dapat.
It has been tested and proven thousands of times, by thousands of people.
You can find countless videos on TH-cam that breakdown the reality of "power savers" being sold to residential customers.
You don't need a lab to know it's cobblers🤣❤️
in short. jumper
If you know somebody that can help me, im in.
just as I thought.. it's just a scam. now it's clear to me
Yes, you can't get a much better source than this! The manager of the Power Lab at Meralco!
@@GadgetAddict But he works for Meralco.
NO !
Nag order aq sa
Shopee sira pagdating
Gotta show this video to my grandma who insists on plugging her bullshit device.
My grandpapa was a supervisor at meralco!
so what happened sir what grandpa said to you, power saver is scam?
Legit ba yan?
They don’t work
na scam pala kame
(so we have been scammed)
Great presentation! 🕺🕺🕺🕺🕺
Good information thanks
but it works for me, the time my power saver died after 8 years my electric bill went higher.
Hey, can you review the pest reject pro? Lol
I had considered reviewing that or similar products but there's already quite a few videos on TH-cam where people use caged rodents and other creatures and show they don']t appear to be effected by the device. It's a harder one to test but from what I've seen, those devices don't work.
they're kinda expensive too xD
wth only talking when it come to elect only device testing do talk. this man know nothiing ab
elect thg, wastingtime.
Thanks!
full of Capasitors.
very well said..thumbs up!!
Thanks, hopefully it will save some people from wasting their money!
Thank-You!
This Answer All There Questions
Hopefully people can share this with anyone who's considering buying one of these so called 'power savers'. I have a much longer video coming soon which looks at everything they're doing in the Meralco Power Lab. But I shared this first because I think it warrants it's own video.
Gadget Addict my cousin use this fraud. time to show him this video
the Best video 👍
Thanks for the info
whoa, did you just do that oml
keh?
Gadget Addict lmao
i hope they have the sample of illegal box that causes the analog meter disc to brake and rattled.. hahahah
That's a thing? I've never heard of that before! Sounds a bit crazy lol. In the UK they will heavily fine you if they suspect you tampered with the meter. In fact I think it's considered a criminal offense. I don't know if it's the same here. Although most homes in the UK are using 'Smart' meters now instead of the old analog ones.
hahaha well its not tampering.. the box generates addtional frequency ofset of the 60hz causing the plates to rattle and to move slow.. its like magnetic braking.. thats why they dont supply analogs anymore.
i also remember the old trick back then.. using ants to stop or to slow down the disc rotations
well meters here uses ge 210 directional meters.. its just a basic watt meter with ir signal reader for special use. most residential uses those meters. and the orange tagged meters are for kuryente load. somewhat smart meters that they can remotely cut off your supply if you ran out of load. and they can get your readings remotely unlike the other one, meterman needs to check it every 22nd of the month for readout
thank you sir 👌👏
You're welcome :) I'm glad they had all those "power savers" in the Meralco Power Lab so I could make this video! I'm also glad that Meralco are taking these initiatives to educate consumers on how to get the most out of their money.
well time to unplug ours
Maybe you can use it as a paper weight :P But joking aside, sorry you wasted your money on it. Hopefully this video will save some people.
Did you notice an increase in your electricity bill? I know for myself my bill was cheaper back when I had mine before I broke it.
👍🏻👍🏻
Way back 2010 my parents bought a powersaver that doesnt work worth 5k for our store.. I think they were persuaded by a budol2x gang.. Hahah
5k, yikes! That's an expensive lesson :(
1 thumbsdown? maybe from powersaver company owner hahahhaha. nice vid! here's another vid from one of my favorite youtube creator with teardown and explanation of those kind of things. th-cam.com/video/xdFVvIo8CZI/w-d-xo.html
hahahaha...naluko na pala ako noon pa...
Botbot!
