I want to thank the GCN for these types of content. I always wanted to start cycling since i am already a motorcyclist and an overweight person. Before binge watching this channel, i thought road bikes were just for pros and that they weren't much fun at all but just for speed... anyways i got my first road bike this year and i couldn't believe how much fun it is to ride. I already lost 9 kgs! My life has changed, thank you GCN
I know Im asking the wrong place but does someone know a way to get back into an instagram account..? I was stupid forgot my password. I would love any help you can offer me.
I've never known 'bloke' to be derogatory... I'll agree with OP that it's a nice change up, though! She's a great presenter, too, and that ALWAYS helps!
First thing I'd did on my allez elite was install 105 calipers. Didn't do much so now I have koolstop salmon pads coming in and we will see how that goes.
I've been cycling to work for almost ten years and just yesterday I watched this video and thought, I should try and adjust my bicycle following these instructions, to make it suitable for me. I also changed the saddle from that original comfort saddle to more road bike kind of saddle and I was blown away. My cycling time to work decreased by two minutes and most importantly: cycling made me feel bad in a good way, rather than feeling bad in a bad way (I cycle to exercise so tempo most be hard) . Thank you GCN for these good videos and I also subscribed to your channel.
Saddle height top tip which worked for me after months of feeling awkward. In bare feet measure your inside leg from the floor to the top of you arch if you know what I mean. Then multiply that by 109%. That measurement is then taken from the pedal top when the peddle is at the lowest point to the top of your saddle. It made an incredible difference to me and my comfort and efficiency etc.
I want to say thank you to GCN for the quality of your videos, I come from a BMX and Mountain Bike background and over the last few months I have purchased a Used Felt Road bike on Ebay and built it up with components that I feel are good quality based on the reviews and videos that GCN has put out, But by far the biggest advancement in comfort was made today, based on the older videos I watched I saw SI review the Fizi:k saddle line, which led me to the Fizi:k website and the saddle finder that they have, based on the video GCN produced about the Sit bones I was able to measure myself and input everything needed including the type of riding I wanted to do, Fizi:k recommended an Argo Tempo R1 150mm saddle and I found it online for sale for $161, now at first I thought that was a lot of money to put out for a saddle, but after installing it and using this current fit video plus a couple of the older ones I was able to get the saddle set up and set out on an hour long test ride on Zwift. My wallet was saying I spent too much money but my ass is saying thank you and I would have spent double to reach this level of comfort. Thank you for the great videos, great content, and great people you have at GCN. Keep up the great work!!
Different worlds....but we share the same inspiration...ride with joy and grow strong....explore and earn pride....Thanks Manon for the inspiration and knowledge...more power to GCN...stay safe...this is Ralphe from the Philippines
Just got my first road bike (entry level Btwin 520 I think) last week. Excellent timing because just changed out brake cables and bar tape, and adjusted the rim brakes, rear derailleur and saddle position today.
Super helpful video. I've been riding for years, but I've learned about adjustments mostly via trial and error. This is def valuable, but having this video to fill in gaps and correct misunderstandings was great. Thanks for making it 🙌🏽
I would recommend working with an experienced mechanic when setting up your first road bike. That might not be possible in Covid lockdown so this video is first rate. All of the adjustments Mannon makes are important but seat height is absolutely critical. My problem is an old sports injury has left one leg a little longer than the other. That creates a fitting problem which is why I always consult an experienced bike fitter. If memory serves Emma Pooley had the same sort of disparity in leg length. When she had her bike fit the fitter commented that her success as a pro was surprising because of her different leg lengths. In that video she said she hadn't had a formal bike fit before, but I suspect she had first rate mechanics and coaches who had noticed and made appropriate adjustments specially for her.
Good video re setting up a new bike. But probably not the best bike to do it with. Most out there probably wouldn't have realized that when lowering the cockpit height the fork steerer has been cut down. But all in all informative.. Love the colourway indeed..
Most bikes sold at a bike shop include a bike fit. All the shops I visit do at least. I should probably schedule one to adjust my bike - I've got different pedals, and saddle since then.
I like your approach; such as, you suggesting clip-less pedals to an audience, of a good share, who've just started to ride a road bike.. the older generation. Who'll come to a stop... and fall over.
i ordered myself a triban rc 120 and it should arrive tomorrow! im so excited, the only bikes ive ever used never had any seats (cause they got stolen), so im pretty happy if i get one at all, so only upgrades for me hahaha
You should of mentioned about the crank length, stem length and handlebar width on your new bike as being important in having a comfortable ride. Cheers 🥂
I Manon has a great style that suits her, very natural, unforced and straight forward. I think it's an interesting contrast to Simon, who I also greatly enjoy, who does his videos with a smile and a wink. Different but both really engaging to watch.
Great introduction to bike set up. While I think my set up is good, it reminded me to check out how things feel and do a quick check using these pointers. Thanks Manon!
You may want to give more explanation on that handlebar height one as I cant understand what happened to the extra height that was there I am interested seeing if this would help my bike but where do the extra spacers go with out leaving a huge pole above the handlebar pivot point.
This comes at the perfect time, with my new favorite presenter from GCN. Ordered my first road/gravel/commuter bike this week, a Stevens Vapor Force. So excited!!!
Nice, I’ve just inherited an almost unused Zeus roadbike that looks like it’s from the mid 90s but has really great components, I’ve been a mountain biker all my life so the position feels awkward but I’m going to use your advice to go and try and set it up.
To add the the clipless pedal. If you buy Crank Brothers egg Beaters. They are 4 sided. Just like egg beater attachment on a food processor. I usually use mountain bike pedals as I find if easier to walk in. Plus if I do use my Look Keo pedals I turn into a bad copy of Matt Stevens. 😂🤣
New to cycling and after getting a smart trainer, I discovered my “comfortable “ saddle position was not. I was getting a tight feeling just above the knee. I have incrementally increased the height of my saddle [about 25mm over a week] and was surprised my avg power has increased and new muscle groups are getting sore. I wasn’t sure I would be a candidate for a bike fit as I am not and never will be a competitive cyclist, however given I feel better and perform better on the trainer I believe it would increase my enjoyment of cycling if I did.
You don't need to be a competitive cyclist to benefit immensely from a proper bike fit. In fact, it's you as a new cyclist who would likely benefit more as a proper fit may address issues you weren't even aware you were having. It's well worth the time and money to find somebody who knows what they're doing.
the ideal saddle position heel test does not apply to every rider some like myself use our ankle movement in the pedal stroke increasing the length of the leg so you may get pain of a low saddle, generally above knee pain is saddle to low and pain behind the knee is saddle to high. one sided knee pain is a good indicator of a leg length difference. A bike fit is a good idea but they will be limited by the bike you currently have fit wise.
Welcome to cycling! Hope your enjoying it so far! Just to let you know 25mm adjustment is MASSIVE, a 5mm adjustment is far far better, as you can get more accurate, believe me 5mm makes a HUGE difference when you get up to doing 50m rides.
I have destroyed my shoulders working construction. High, high handlebars. 2006 Giant 0cr 3. My first road bike and still the one I ride the most. Crazy adjustable bar stem.
Yes! Got my first bike today! #midlifecrisis Tnx for the tips! I was expecting for the shop to set up the bike, but they did not. So tnx for this video, i will take me a long way!
Very good and informative video, I would add something that happened to me though, I just got my brand new bike for Christmas and as you said, it was previously assembled by my local vendor, despite my bike isn't a professional or hi end type, it is more a medium gamma type of bike, it has shimano deore systems which I found they're very good, how ever, after I set my bike for the very first ride I hoped on and the tires were too deflated but then I realized that I didn't know what the tire pressure should be, so I had to look it up on the internet and there were too many tables and different values, mine is a mountain bike, I'm 1,75 m tall (around 5´10") and 92 Kg. my bike's wheels are 29" so I found they should be somewhere between 18 and 28 psi, therefore I started from the bottom but 18 was still too low and felt like the bike was being break so I had to increased the pressure up to 28 psi in order to feel it more loose whilst not pedaling. In summary maybe you could include the pressure info for the tires, just a suggestion, great video again and I surely will be watching more. Happy new year and the Covid be extinguished this year.
Another Orbea am starting to think that this and Canyon are the only bikes in the world, yes I get they sponsor GCN but it would be nice to see other bike brands on the channel once in a while, other than that gripe keep up the good work always enjoy your videos.

Why choosing a bike frame size is important for certain height? Does the saddle height adjustment compensates any inconvenience for your height? Meaning if the frame size is too big for you you can lower the saddle height to get the same leg reach towards the pedal or the road for that matter.
Oh that shoelace ! Watch it guys and gals - can cause problems -note to self - only use velcro on whatever shoes you use on your bike - whatever style pedals you use ! Velcro shoes !
Great series of GCN "how to" videos and training sessions Mannon - please can I have some more. Is that an orca or orca area? What the spec on the groupset and chain ring.
I injured my knee while riding my new bike because I didn't know about saddle positioning back then. With a wrong saddle position, not only can you not exert enough power, you'll also be in a wrong posture doing it, thus causing injuries.

Love to hear!!
Any progress since you started? Still riding?
It's good to hear that Manon has the sweetest of birdsong in her garden compared to Si's pigeons, crows and magpies making an awful racket.
The birds, they're screaming!
I envy that bike... have fun!
Manon is Princess Snow White; she attracts only sweet and adorable songbirds. 😂
Any Alliums?

I know Im asking the wrong place but does someone know a way to get back into an instagram account..?
I was stupid forgot my password. I would love any help you can offer me.
I'm starting to love Manon more and more with each video. Her outtakes are funny!
She is getting better and better in every video for sure. I wonder if she ever ridden for a test team ?
Fantastic having Manon do these videos. We have enough vids with blokes, a competent woman presenting well is a breath of fresh air. Bravo
A man is called a bloke and if I were to refer to a woman by something insulting like that, it would be derogatory. Treat people with respect.
@@13ballom since when is bloke considered derogatory? Or even slightly insulting?
I've never known 'bloke' to be derogatory... I'll agree with OP that it's a nice change up, though! She's a great presenter, too, and that ALWAYS helps!
What a great presenter! I really like that she keeps it super chill whilst being informative and useful
Manon killin it with her quarantine content. Another great video
I just bought my first road bike today, what good timing this video is!

Anyone else think Manon is fast becoming their favourite presenter on GCN?
well i like her, but she's never gonna beat ollie ;)
Manon's cool, but I missed Matt's humourous style.
Simon is my favorite, but Manon is definitely A Team.
I don't know how to explain it but I like watching some more than others. I also miss Chris.
I agree Simon and Ollie are also great and for me Matt is irreplaceable but Manon is doing a fantastic job too

All the GCN boys are okay but more Manon please.
You should say when you get a modern bike get an adjustable torque wrench with multiple heads. Over tightening could end in disaster.
Very helpful. Thank you !
Loved the outtake 😂
That’s a sick new bike! Congrats Manon

Those forks are so cool, I bet they're mega aero because the air wants to be seen with them as long as possible.😎
Manon is refreshing so does the weather also and the videos by her, how come so much clear sky in UK?
Because the country is in lockdown so a big reduction in air pollution. No planes, very few cars.
Or maybe because of the weather and Wales gets the fresh air first straight off the Atlantic Ocean?
Or just because we're in Lockdown, so of course the weather has been beautiful for months!

First, ALWAYS use a torque carbon parts! This is an absolute must! Over torque and you void the warranty, then you just have a pile of bike parts.
Second: one pedal is reverse threaded, the simple way to remember how to put on pedals is to pedal backwards to put them on while holding the pedal, pedal forwards to take them off.
At the end of this video you should very much recommend a professional fit when these bizarre times are over. Nothing can replace a good professional bike fit.
Again, always use a torque wrench!
Unpopular Opinion: bike fits should come with all new bikes. All this stuff should've been done at the shop during delivery.

I suggest to add how to adjust the distance between brake handle and the grip bar. Many beginners don't know how to do it to fit their finger length.
