  • This week, Tom's got his hands on the brand-new, third-generation Andes jacket from Alpinestars.
This formidable jacket boasts Alpinestars' exclusive Drystar waterproof membrane, with a detachable thermal lining and improved ventilation system - but is it worth the upgrade?

This formidable yet lightweight jacket is made from advanced poly-fabric textile, integrated with Alpinestars' proprietary Drystar membrane that is impervious to water and allows perspiration for complete all-ride comfort. A detachable long-sleeve thermal liner (100g body & 80g sleeves) allows you to adapt to the outside temperature, while a new, direct ventilation system (DVS) consists of two zippered air vents at the chest that allows cool air to enter the jacket and exhaust hot air out the back. The premium YKK main zipper provides a secure and convenient closure, and reflective detailing on the front and back provide night visibility.
Removable Nucleon Flex Plus armour at the elbow and shoulders provide internal impact protection, with compartments at the chest and back to fit additional chest and back armour (sold separately) and the jacket is able to perfectly accommodate the Tech-Air 5 vest. The elbows and lower arm are textured with additional material for enhanced abrasion-resistance, and the sleeves pre-contoured with stretch panels at the elbow for freedom of movement.
Velcro adjustments at the lower arm and waist provide a customised, agreeable fit, while an integrated soft edge collar and 3D mesh interior provide long-distance comfort. The jacket also boasts a plethora of pockets, including two external zippered chest pockets, cargo pockets, a large external utility pocket on the lower back, internal pockets and a waterproof wallet pocket to safely secure your belongings.

Maybe add a spotlight on your black gear showcases, can’t see any of the details in your lightning conditions

I would’ve loved to get the camo color way man, but I’m in the middle east and I’m planning to cross many borders. I wouldn’t want to be mistaken to be with any militia or military personnel lol.

Thanks for the demo. I had version one nice jacket, then bought v2, somewhat dissapointed. Clearly downgrades, all ykk zips on v1 not on v2 [not labled as such anyway] The two main front pockets on v2 don't have zips, which were on v1. Hope v3 has reversed those downgrades.

Good review! Just stumbled upon this video. How long has this jacket been out? I think your video was 2 years ago. So I was looking at this jacket now because I just learned about it. So is their a newer version that is better? Also do you still recommend this jacket and or is there a better currently available? Thanks I hope you are still checking these messages.

I remember making this, the jacket had just launched. It has not yet been superseded and stills offers a lot of features, even the old version is still keeping riders safe and dry. For the money, it's hard to beat

Is it true that they got rid of the chest protector insert and you can't remove the shoulders and elbows inserts?

How's it compare to the Dainese Tempest 2 jacket?

Both jackets actually are quite similar in what they do, but being £70 more expensive the Dainese has a slightly more "premium feel" over the Alpinestars. The Tempest also has a higher collar which some may prefer or not.
Both jackets are great and do a similar job, you won't go wrong with either 👍 - Tom
