Datto your preparation for videos does not go unnoticed. They are amazing and I always look forward to your next video. Please keep up the amazing work you do
Great video and perfect timing as I just today was contemplating trying the Hammer. I love the fact that rather than doing 15 minutes of "here is every possible combo" you focused on what attacks you like to use the most and when in the fight. Handy for the noobs like myself who are not sure where to start with a whole bunch of possible moves. All with your usual quality delivery - keep up the great work mate, look forward to more...
I gotta say I really like how casual yet informative you are. While I love Arekkz's weapon guides, I feel sometimes he can be a bit too lengthy and confusing, and not apply practicality to a lot of situations. (Like what moves are best to be used most often etc.) Your style teaches while also not being wordy to the point of confusion, and I looove the addition of skill suggestions at the end. Keep it up dude :D
Thanks Datto. I've watched your vids since D1 because of the amount of effort and time you take to go in depth with explaining. Since the release of monster hunter no one's come close to the depth you put into your vids (except for maybe 2 others but I enjoy yours the most). Please keep doing these videos.
Quick follow up on Slugger with the hammer: Now I'm not positive about the values on Hammer in this game, but I'd like to clear some of the misconceptions about slugger. KO is held at a threshold and once that threshold is reached, a monster gets KOd. Similar to status effects, after a monster is KOd the next time you go to KO them, it will take longer. What slugger does ISNT making the monster KO more often, it just makes them KO quicker, if that makes sense. Let's put some values into this (note I'm not 100% on these numbers, they are just examples). Let's say Diablo's has a KO threshold of 550. Let's say that hammer Golf Swing deals 250 KO damage. This means the third golf swing will KO Diablos. Since Diablo's has been knocked down once, his threshold increases. Let's say to 1100. So now it'll take 5 golf swings to knock him down again. After that his threshold increases to 1600 and so on. So now, what Slugger is doing at Max level is increasing your stun values by 30%. So instead of 250 KO damage on Golf swing, you'll do roughly 330. Now keep in mind the monster still has a health pool and dies once reduced to zero. You'll get the first second and third KOs quicker, but the monster is going to be dead before the 4th. Essentially, it's an OK skill to have, but most of the Hammer community is finding partbreaker to be more effective in causing the monster to stagger more often than normal. Slugger is still strong, but don't put it on expecting to knock a monster out more than 3 or 4 times. Hope this help guys, and remember, don't be discouraged from building it, if that's your playstyle, then play it! Happy hunting fellas!
I'm new to Hammer (Long Sword main...yeah insanity i know) and was told Slugger AND Part Breaker are great combinations along with Stamina Thief what is your opinion?
when you have an opportunity , instead of going straight for the big bang , I'd recommend a R2 not charged hit followed up with a triangle swing (deals a lot of damage) and THEN follow up int a big bang combo .
That combo is good only if you knock down the monster very close to you, because if you still have to get close to start the combo you wont have enough time to hit the last hit of big bang in the combo that you mentioned
mata-pombos i find that with earplugs lvl 5 , i get pany of those opportunities (monsters scream for a while) , and most notably if you’re hitting the head , you’re very likely to stun lock the monster , therefore leaving you enough time to perform the entire thing . I noticed that when slaying nergigante . He’d often move after a big bang 3 and try to attack only to be hit right away by the follow up big bang 4 , stunning him and stopping his attack . I generally keep doing this combo until a big bang misses .
Nice guide Datto! I've seen a few guides on the hammer and yours is my favourite. I love that you go over the basics then add the real details like skills and abstract concepts. That's why you're the best keep it up dude
Absolutely fantastic content. Exactly what we have come to expect from your content from day one. Analytical, insightful, in-depth, and entertaining. Love it.
Glad you’re really settling into Monster Hunter hope the content is fun to make! Also hope upcoming games like Anthem, the eventual division sequel, etc. turn out well. Then they can provide you with some more opportunities for your high quality content. And who knows, maybe Bungie will actually take all the advice from last time and this time and use it for a third time lucky scenario for the next Destiny.
As a hammer main since MH3U this guide is pretty good, most guides focus purely on highest damage output which in those they basically say the second charge is the worst as there isn't much for follow ups and while has higher damage isn't the highest but the speed it comes out and the reach of the attack makes it a very valuable tool. In the future you will want to have those super heavy hitting combos in your video but your addition of how useful certain attacks are makes your guide just as useful. Good job Datto
This is fantastic. Give yourself time to get comfortable with the other weapons before doing guides, but I really think this is a great way to apply your info-centric content. I would love seeing a long sword vid!
After doing all of low rank with a bow, I switched to hammer to get some KO damage since no one else in my group of friends was doing that type of damage. I haven't picked the bow back up since. Hammer is so much fun. Thanks for the great guide!
I have been a big fan of your content since TTK of Destiny. Now that me and my boyfriend are playing monster Hunter ourselves it's amazing to see one of my favorite content creators moving to this platform. Thank you so much datto for your content and being an awesome streamer as well.
Nice guide Datto! That said, the triangle combo is not as bad as you think, the final hit has incredible stun and exhaust damage and is great to use on staggered monsters since the big bang is way too long, especially if you initiate it with the side smash. Anyways keep up the great work!
Glaive user here. Acrobatic play style. Stylish aerial combos. Sky aficionado. Finesse leaning. Too weak at times to put the monster down. This video sold me to use the hammer. Enjoying it more than I should. Clearly a second main of mine now. Thanks, Datto.
I am also a Hammer user. Nice video! The hammer also has a wall climbing backflip spinning attack that can be used to mount monster. It's situational but very useful when it is available. The arena always has climb-able wall.
Not a bad video datto. I like how you explained how the charge levels worked. I know when I started using the hammer and watched a few videos I had no clue how to do the uppercut and had to spend an hour in training to figure it out
Loved watching this, I picked up using the hammer after seeing you using it in earlier videos because it seemed pretty cool. Great having everything broken down like that and I really think I can level up my hammer play a bit now.
Coming from a hammer user this guide was great for newbies but I wish you mentioned more that you punish a monster for giving big openings and stun it to get in HUGE damage and you also forgot to mention the fact that the hammer is the best weapon EVER. Keep up the good work
God I love using Hammers in this game. nearing 140 hours in and most of those have been Hammer related. Just the hilarity of the slide attack and that satisfying sensation of landing an Uppercut, just to see the Mob reel back and fall over is just Priceless to me.
It was mentioned but really undersold: the Hammer is also good for causing Exhaustion. Every hit that doesn't land on the head builds up the affliction, I believe, and this can be almost as effective as a full knockout. It's as though all Hammers have two afflictions built in.
Wow.. Datto is almost at 800k subs.. I still remember watching your original VoG video in Destiny 1 lol, anyway, it's great to see your content again and you're helping me heaps as I'm new to monster hunter, but this content is super helpful! even some of my friends who have played every monster hunter say your videos are still helpful! Keep up the good work man, you deserve nothing but success!
A few extra nuances to the weapon that were missed for anyone wanting to go really in depth: When you are falling you can press/hold R2 to go into a charged mounting attack. This attack also gives you insane extra distance and directional control of your fall. When mounted, hold Triangle/Y to do a charged mount finisher attack. Almost always do this on the head. When powered up, the lvl1 R2 into a single Triangle does a very strong hit that's slightly different from your normal triangle combo initiator, and I recommend it if you have more time than a lvl2 charge. Lastly I highly highly highly recommend the skill Affinity Slider on hammer if you do a lot of slide attacks as you get a 30% affinity bonus for maybe 10 seconds or so after sliding, which makes all those spinning hits do an insane amount of damage. This is personal opinion
Very nice you covered pretty much everything! (Hammer vet here.) I'd like to reinforce the importance of canceling your animation, and that a good follow up is the R2 charge lv1. The advantage of the Lv1 charge is the ability to change your orientation easily without loosing to much time, while the monster is down. (Heads can be small and whiffing a combo ain't great.) Lvl 2 charge is definitely the most useful tool for a hammer user. I remember knowing Zinogre so well I was getting hits more often then the dual blade user in the team. This leads me to something not specific to the hammer but did not cover it. If used well can be very powerful and rise your consistency. *High frames* If instead of getting out of the way of an attack you high frame it, you can output a lot more damage. It requires knowing the monster and which attack you can easily roll trough, but something to try against a monster you are farming. ALSO, THE SPIN JUMP IS NEW AND HOLY SHIT ITS AWESOME! HAMMER BROS!
Enjoyed the guide:) with being a veteran, I can say you're doing a great job so keep it up. You gotta get into monster hunter somehow and making videos on it in what seems to be a crowded space all of a sudden ^-^
Monster Hunter combat as a whole, with exception to the ranged weapons, is an "in-and-out" style of combat. I'm starting to groan every time I hear someone say that a weapon is a hit and run type weapon or anything of the sort. Regardless, great video, Datto. I know hammer is your expertise right now but I'd love many more of these weapon guides!
Weapons like Lance and Gunlance let you stay very close to the monster at all time whereas weapons like GS are pretty much one or two hits then sheathing and repeating so I understand why he calls hammer a hit and run weapon.
Datto one thing I like to add slugger lvl3 also known as KO king is a god skill for hammer users also count your stun hits if you can get the amount of stuns it takes to ko a monster down you can be a literal play maker and the satisfaction of creating a opening for your teammates
Awesome video Datto. It sounds like you enjoyed making it and I think that you can do some cool stuff with Monster Hunter. I see that there’s a ton of room for people to get knowledgeable content for the series and everyone in the community is always learning so I hope that it does well for you. It’s an awesome game I have a lot of interest in and I’d love to see it be able to support you because I see a lot of cool potential in Datto MonHun videos.
Lmao I'm trying so hard to be mature and not make jokes about you guys "discharging" on monsters! Haha but yeah I too love letting of my elemental load on monsters 😂
I fucking loved this video datto mate 😂 like the humor shining through for sure. I mostly smash dual blades in monster hunter cause the hammer just doesnt have the speed im looking for... Looking forward to more content mate I hope yer enjoying it these days! 😁
Made this comment two weeks ago boy was I wrong about the hammer. I've played a LOT of hammer since this comment and don't even own a pair of dual blades anymore 😂😂😂 fuckin' love this game.
Ya missed out on how when your in the charged state the charged side swing into follow up becomes the much stronger charged follow up (and animation wise, looks boss af ).
Great vid, never really did the uppercut, will do that more, I always did the spinning attack, which at the lower monsters was ok but now that I’m getting higher the monsters are easily knocking me out of it
thank you very much for showing the spin's usefulness against val. it's incredible against him. i was about to be like "what about val?" datto - "i got u covered fam."
man i wanna play MhW so bad, but i wanna play it on pc and its so painful having to wait for fall, at least ill be prepared when it comes thanks to you Datto.
Dunno if this is still the case but in the series prior to world the higher your sharpness level was the bigger your stun modifier was, that alongside the attack modifier for sharpness made handicraft an invaluable skill, and with things like protective polish in world I'd wager its still something worth having if you can fit it in.
Hey, just some notes from a hammer user: Slugger has always been an unfortunately weak skill in all MH games and world is no exception. Getting a KO 1 or 2 hits early is redundant when you're going to keep hitting the head anyway. Abilities that can improve your stamina or more attack/crit work better. There are other parts that can be weak to impact damage, like wings or belly. I mention this because the head is a general weak point for a lot of monsters for both blademaster and gunner, and it can be hard when everyone is competing for space on it or you're too far away to get decent hits in. You can upswing people out of the way but you won't exactly be popular if you do. Status (poison, paralysis, etc.) weapons take the most advantage of quick hits, regardless of the status' number on the weapon. It's why dual blades dont have that many status options. Hammers are not exactly the best at it, but if you want to effectively inflict paralysis or whatever other status, you'll need to more quick hits than strong hits. Upswing wont bounce regardless of sharpness. Tolerance thresholds are a thing with KO, status and traps. After you inflict the condition, the monster's tolerance threshold is increased and you will need more hits before you can inflict it again (traps become less effective after repeated uses). This is important to note with KO, because even in an amazing hunt it'll be rare getting more than two. Also, be aware that if you go a long time without hitting the monster, the buildup of the status goes down (this doesnt happen with blast). So if you wanna inflict status properly, you gotta be constantly hitting. That's all I wanted to point out. Great vid dude.
Pertatoes note on the KO I run a full slugger, partbreaker, and weakness exploit set a lot and I can stun at LEAST 4 Times each (solo) hunt Good points on everything else though
Datto I feel so bad for you with the whole destiny fiasco I really enjoy how your moving on to other games like this.....and I think your an amazing TH-camr and keep it up........
This is a pretty decent beginner tutorial for the Hammer. Great content, you either did a ton of research or played a fuckton of hammer. I watched your Destiny2 stuff and am glad you're doing quality Monster Hunter content (there are some D1/D2 streamers/content creators that have been releasing uninformed MH:W Content). See you someday in G rank my dude.
Not sure if the newest patch buffed it at all, since this video came out beforehand, but for a paralysis element hammer (or just raw damage right behind diablos'), I've been doing very well with Barroth Breaker III. Only drawback is limited sharpness.
Crit draw can be Pretty good with the hammer. Definitely not a must but because it’s a get in and get out quickly type of weapon just sheath it after every attack. That way almost every one of your attacks will have crit draw boosting it.
Nice guide as usual i started with the hammer and i still do love it in fact most of the weapons are fun to use so i do switch it up if i feel i need to do different things for different enemies. I also like using the Lance the regular lance not the gun one for a more defensive play and to kinda tank hits for the squad.
Great tutorial. Even as a hammer user for pretty much my entire playthrough, there were some things that I didn't know.
Thanks!
Datto your preparation for videos does not go unnoticed. They are amazing and I always look forward to your next video. Please keep up the amazing work you do

You are amazing datto, we all love you. Keep those epic guides coming.
Solid weapon guide! I'll be using this when I try out hammer.
Glaive user here. Acrobatic play style. Stylish aerial combos. Sky aficionado. Finesse leaning.
Too weak at times to put the monster down.
This video sold me to use the hammer. Enjoying it more than I should. Clearly a second main of mine now. Thanks, Datto.

I just picked up MHW after petering out of Destiny 2 without even knowing you did videos for it lol I just can't escape you Datto!
Loved watching this, I picked up using the hammer after seeing you using it in earlier videos because it seemed pretty cool. Great having everything broken down like that and I really think I can level up my hammer play a bit now.
I literally just crafted my hammer and gear set, and this video appears #1 in my notifications, Datto truly does Destiny!
Derek Dagostino except not really xD
I see what you did there
Coming from a hammer user this guide was great for newbies but I wish you mentioned more that you punish a monster for giving big openings and stun it to get in HUGE damage and you also forgot to mention the fact that the hammer is the best weapon EVER. Keep up the good work
This guide is among the best out there! Please do more!
Love this content datto
0:07 - 0:30 What you described here basically describes every single weapon in the game.
The Datto treatment for MHW is much appreciated dude!
Awesome, I was already planning on trying out hammers next, and this came out perfect timing. Thank you, Datto, keep it up!
Spot on weapon guide, concise, correct and with the ol' Datto signature flare. 👌
God I love using Hammers in this game. nearing 140 hours in and most of those have been Hammer related. Just the hilarity of the slide attack and that satisfying sensation of landing an Uppercut, just to see the Mob reel back and fall over is just Priceless to me.
Dude. It was the most helpful hammer guide I found on the internet (noob talking).
Datto, you are awesome and I love the MHW content. I played Destiny since day 1 and I love all of your content. Keep chugging along. You da best.
Slider is a great gem for hammer also. Great guide, I really enjoyed it.
Triangle triangle triangle is second best combo for stun and exhaust. Big bang is first choice if you can land it all.
Great guide bro! You covered almost everything in easy simple way.
A few extra nuances to the weapon that were missed for anyone wanting to go really in depth:
When you are falling you can press/hold R2 to go into a charged mounting attack.
Barroth Breaker III is a nice paralysis one for starting players because it gives that boost in defense, in case you make mistakes.
Solid Tutorial. I would say it's as good as nearly anyone else's out there.
Well made video especially that part telling people not to worry if you don't always break parts I was having this problem early on.
this help me a lot, i mean a lot, cleanest hammer video so far i watched
Amazing guide on the Hammer. Going to give this weapon a try.
HAMMER BROS UNITE!
jingelhymer UNITED
YESS
Also the sliding attack is charge dependent. You can charge while sliding, more charge results in a faster spin with more hits
Thanks Datto for the video. I would love to see other weapons in the future
Very nice you covered pretty much everything! (Hammer vet here.)
I'd like to reinforce the importance of canceling your animation, and that a good follow up is the R2 charge lv1.
The advantage of the Lv1 charge is the ability to change your orientation easily without loosing to much time, while the monster is down. (Heads can be small and whiffing a combo ain't great.)
Lvl 2 charge is definitely the most useful tool for a hammer user. I remember knowing Zinogre so well I was getting hits more often then the dual blade user in the team.
This leads me to something not specific to the hammer but did not cover it. If used well can be very powerful and rise your consistency.
*High frames*
If instead of getting out of the way of an attack you high frame it, you can output a lot more damage.
It requires knowing the monster and which attack you can easily roll trough, but something to try against a monster you are farming.
ALSO, THE SPIN JUMP IS NEW AND HOLY SHIT ITS AWESOME!
HAMMER BROS!
By "high frames" do you mean "i-frames" (invincibility frames)?
Yes invincibility frames.
Enjoyed the guide:) with being a veteran, I can say you're doing a great job so keep it up. You gotta get into monster hunter somehow and making videos on it in what seems to be a crowded space all of a sudden ^-^

Hey I loved your guide, as being your first one I think you killed it out there hopefully people weren't too harsh :)
Started using hammer a few days ago and this guide is helpful enough, hammer is great fun BTW
Dad's back at it with the super helpful and funny content.
Best hammer guide, and i've watched a lot.
Couldn't agree more with the tips, nicely done.
Dope! Switch axe next!!!!
I agree. Hammer was the weapon I started with in MHW, but now Switch Axe is my favorite.
Michael Connor Same. It feels so good doing an elemental discharge.
Switch axe is my favorite now. I've used the LS, SNS, Hammer, and HBG. Nothing compares to climbing on a monster, and unleashing that discharge.
Switch axe guide
Get amped

Go home
Lmao I'm trying so hard to be mature and not make jokes about you guys "discharging" on monsters! Haha but yeah I too love letting of my elemental load on monsters 😂
Great video. Keep them coming please. I need all the help I can get in MHW which I'm so hooked.
I fucking loved this video datto mate 😂 like the humor shining through for sure. I mostly smash dual blades in monster hunter cause the hammer just doesnt have the speed im looking for... Looking forward to more content mate I hope yer enjoying it these days! 😁

Yeah I'd love to see a video like this for each weapon.
We need more datto! Keep them coming
I've been using the hammer since the start. So dope.
Ya missed out on how when your in the charged state the charged side swing into follow up becomes the much stronger charged follow up (and animation wise, looks boss af ).
Great vid, never really did the uppercut, will do that more, I always did the spinning attack, which at the lower monsters was ok but now that I’m getting higher the monsters are easily knocking me out of it
DattoDoesMonsterHuner it´s a good thing!!
love to see this on your channel datto.
thank you very much for showing the spin's usefulness against val. it's incredible against him. i was about to be like "what about val?" datto - "i got u covered fam."
Were you all not gentle I’ve been waiting for another one
Great guide. I normally just use the heavy bowgun but the hammer looks like it would be a great beginner melee weapon to use
Loving the MonHunt content! Keep it up!
man i wanna play MhW so bad, but i wanna play it on pc and its so painful having to wait for fall, at least ill be prepared when it comes thanks to you Datto.
Who else wants Datto to use the hunting horn???? 👌🏽👍🏽🙏🏽 great vid keep them coming man 👏🏽
The charged B or circle stance can be negated when the monster screams as well. That’s only if you don’t have earplugs.
I play Chargeblade but you make the hammer look like fun! Ill certainly give it a spin!
Dunno if this is still the case but in the series prior to world the higher your sharpness level was the bigger your stun modifier was, that alongside the attack modifier for sharpness made handicraft an invaluable skill, and with things like protective polish in world I'd wager its still something worth having if you can fit it in.
Hey, just some notes from a hammer user:
Slugger has always been an unfortunately weak skill in all MH games and world is no exception.
Pertatoes note on the KO I run a full slugger, partbreaker, and weakness exploit set a lot and I can stun at LEAST 4 Times each (solo) hunt
Good points on everything else though
Good vid. Yours was about as in depth and quicker than some of the others
There is also a gem that's boosts affinity after sliding. Tried on my horn build by didn't slide enough
Insect glave next! Keep pumping out mhw guides. They are great
Datto I feel so bad for you with the whole destiny fiasco I really enjoy how your moving on to other games like this.....and I think your an amazing TH-camr and keep it up........
"Slugger should DEFINITELY be in your build...but maybe it isn't that great...but maybe you should use it...but probably don't."
Yes Datto does weapon guides!!!!!!!
Nice video.
If you haven't used a switch axe, I suggest giving it a go. Loads of fun to use, and you can really put out some damage.
Thanks for the great video Datto!
Datto the Lord of Hammers.
Crit draw can be Pretty good with the hammer. Definitely not a must but because it’s a get in and get out quickly type of weapon just sheath it after every attack. That way almost every one of your attacks will have crit draw boosting it.
the basic ledge jump attack charged has incredible knockout potential.
didnt read the comments but you forgot the wall jump. extreme dmg also, very easy to do if has wall to run off of.
I very much enjoyed this weapon guide datto and thought it was very well done! Do more please! Maybe give dual blades or charge blade a shot?
The jail workshop hammer is also very good. It has high attack and paralysis damage.
Nice guide as usual i started with the hammer and i still do love it in fact most of the weapons are fun to use so i do switch it up if i feel i need to do different things for different enemies. I also like using the Lance the regular lance not the gun one for a more defensive play and to kinda tank hits for the squad.
Jumping skill doesn’t work on sliding attacks. Just like affinity slides don’t work on jumps. Power boost also improves KO status, always use it.
YESSSS!! Keep them coming!!
