    I have been flying for a while with my Mavic Pro but this is a great review. What I like about your clips is that you are concise, clear and accurate. There is no background music or annoying graphics. Thank you.

    I've yet to get a drone, but I am looking at the DJI Mini as a first timer. However, I've seen a lot of YT videos when they mention about, "You may need to calibrate your compass".
    And I've always though, "Hmmm... Seems more hassle than it's worth!"
    And you've just explained it in such a simple and concise way, that I can move these calibrations out of the "Why I shouldn't buy a drone" list.
    Nice one. And thank you from the UK.

      I appreciate the post and it's a very simple process that you'll only have to do very infrequently. Most of my flights are done without worrying about the compass and if it's off, the application will alert you and you can quickly calibrate it. The Mavic Mini is an amazingly cool drone and you'll have a lot of fun flying it. Be sure to sub the channel and stop back soon so you don't miss anything. Rick

    Hi Rick, while the information your sharing is very important I think your delivery is a little fast. I had to replay the video a couple of times in order to get things in perspective, I don’t know, it may just be me and to ask you to slow down just a tad could be difficult as your experienced and know more about what’s happening the us Virgin flying novices. I find the information that you have very valuable, so thank you for that.

    Compass calibration: If the Mavic Mini is purchased directly from DJI, is the compass calibration set for its location in China? Do they calibrate it for your shipping address? I imagine this would be a bit time consuming trying to match up specific orders with specific delivery points. Or, on its initial power up after receipt, does it somehow calibrate itself or does it require a compass calibration on first use? Thank you for your videos as they are very informative!

  • @DFDuck55
    @DFDuck55 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I always begin my compass calibration facing North, and carry a small compass in my drone bag. I've been doing it this way since before drones had compass, when calibrating cell phone compass. Cell phone compass and the first drones with compass included that step in the calibration instructions. For some reason newer drone compass calibration instructions have discluded that step, but I still do it that way anyway.

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Duck, you're taking it to a whole other level with the compass and I'm sure it makes it more accurate. I've been lucky to not have any issues so far with the IMU or the compass. Also, I sent you a reply today to your email so let me know if you have any other questions. Rick

    • @DFDuck55
      @DFDuck55 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sure DJI has their compass refined by now so it doesn't really matter what direction you start the calibration in. But it's just habit with me by now, so I do it that way. With cheaper drones I think it's more beneficial to start the calibration facing magnetic North. One sure sign you need to calibrate the compass is if your drone starts "toilet bowling"; flying in small counter-clockwise circles. That's caused by an out of calibration compass fighting with the GPS. They both want to be right so both keep trying to correct the drone.

    Hi Rick. Does it really need to detach the camera cover when doing IMU and Compass calibrations? So for IMU you can do it once on your first flight and whenever the app tells you to do so BUT for compass calibration, aside from doing it during your first flight you need to do it everytime you change locations and especially when the app tells you? OR if its much safer for new users to do IMU and compass calibration in any flight even in the same locations or not and whenever you are changing batteries? Thanks for your always informative videos! Kudos!

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Epson, you need to remove the gimbal lock every time you're going to power up the drone because the quad goes through a "power up" routine that moves the gimbal around to check it's motion and you'll get a gimbal error (and possibly damage the gimbal) if you don't. As far as the calibrations, do both the compass and IMU when the drone first arrives and then don;t worry about the IMU unless you see an error. I do the compass every time I move to a location far away (more than 2 hours) from the last place I flew. Thanks for the post and I hope that helps. Rick

    Actually, the IMU has a gyro to control the yaw by modulate the torque on those motors to keep the drone stable in Z axis, and to turn the drone when you give a rudder command.

    Hi Rick, I know this is an old video of yours with the 1st Gen Mini, but I am curious about something, and I did not see anyone else bring it up when I scanned the comments: Why does your “Compass Calibration” only show 2 directions to turn the drone? My Mini from day-one has 3 directions to turn the drone (as do my older Yuneec Breeze, that I had for years, and my new Mini2). Is that something that changed (from 2 to 3 directions) after you got your Mini or is it an error you made when you “filmed” thus video 😆

    are you sure about holding drone UP for calibration? Always before I held drone in normal flying position and then rotated 360 degrees horizontally. Then pointed drone with camera UP and spun it horizontally, too. SO is the Mini different than the Mavic 2 Pro calibration? Also Billy Kyle does not demonstrate compass calibration like you did.

    • @RogerFord100
      @RogerFord100 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am with Concerning Drones here. The only official DJI video on their website describes the process as HOLDING the drone horizontal (right side up) and rotating 360 degrees (he does it ccw.) Theh he HOLDS it vertically (nose pointing down) and again rotates 360 (ccw). Granted, it is an old video, but I sincerely doubt that they have changed their terminology. BTW there appears to be no user manual available yet for consultation.

    Hey Rick question ? Do you have a video on what stick controls pitch roll and yaw and if not would you be willing to make one for us flyers that have never touched a controller?

    • @markuschelios6891
      @markuschelios6891 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In mode 2 the left stick controls the throttle on its vertical axis and yaw on the horizontal. The right stick is cyclic and will pitch the craft in the same direction as the stick when oriented in the same direction as the pilot. In Europe, mode 1 is more common. There's a video called "Mode 1 vs Mode 2 - Drone Remote Control" on YT that goes over the differences.

    Hello Drone Valley
    Love my Mavic Mini drone. After performing a Settings Reset on my iPhone 12 Pro Max for a different issue, and after using it without any issues prior to the Settings Reset, the Mavic Mini’s Orientation Display ( the arrow with the dot in the bottom middle of the phone screen) is missing. I have done the IMU and Compass calibrations as supposed and As I have always done, I have made sure my location settings on my iPhone are on, also I have made sure my iPhone’s compass is calibrated as well but the issue of the Orientation Display being missing or not showing on my iPhone’s screen is still happening... Any suggestions? Is there any way I can factory reset this drone? If it can be done, that is? Or any other suggestions? I will really appreciate your help with this matter because it’s a pretty awesome way for me not to loose my drone... Thank you for your great and well done videos... Btw, Happy new year and stay safe out there Drone Valley!!!

      Thanks for the post and it sounds like you have an issue with the application. I'm sure the drone and controller are OK so try deleting and reinstalling the application to see if that fixes it. If not, delete it and download it again from the DJI site (the latest version) and see if that helps. Good luck and let me know how you make out. Rick

      Thanks for posting and I was using the iPad Mini 4 this morning for a flight and it works fine with the Mavic Mini. The only thing that's a little wonky is that the DJI Fly app isn't coded for scaling so the menu system is a little compressed on the iPad. One thing I noticed setting up IMU with mini/ mini 2 is when you put the drone to the side it drops inwards a bit , should we allow it to be that way it have to hold it 90 degree to the surface for side calibration ?

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries, you're essentially rotating the drone body through both a horizontal and vertical plane to help it calibrate. If it's off a little, the drone will make you spin it a little longer to compensate. It's wicked smart and you should only need to do this calibration if you travel a long distance between flights. Thanks for the post.

    When calibrating the IMU on my mavic mini, it asks me to lay it on both sides. It lays perfectly flat/parallel to the table on one side, but slightly angled on the other side. Is this normal? If not, should I be holding it parallel on the angled side so it calibrates correctly?

    The onscreen instructions show it being moved about while folded up. I wonder if that is the reason the IMU calibration has failed three times? I am getting tired of all the glitches encountered and so far it hasn't flown in hours of working on it. Turning off the drone I have to pull the battery. Registration was a pain. What next. Maybe DJI has a good help desk. If not, its going back.

    Billy Kyle shows his video to do this and his app shows legs closed for IMU?? Did DJI change the app to show different way now for IMU or doesn't matter if legs open or closed??

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the post and I was following the instructions in the Beta version of the DJI Fly app I was using but it doesn't really matter. The way the IMU calibration works is that it takes the first position as "home" and when you move it (arms open or closed) it marks the travel at 90 degrees and 180 degrees for the quad. If you ever do it wrong, the calibration will fail and tell you to start over. It's a very smart drone. Thanks for stopping by and be sure to check back this week for more content. Rick

    Take note: There is a bug in the Mavic mini firmware that might result in a fly away if your compass isn't working correctly. I have logged a case with DJI and they are looking at my flight log. I have also shared it with other people on the DJI forums.
    Basically the Mavic Mini heading was incorrect before take off and stayed locked in the wrong direction after take off, with no indication or warning given by the Mavic or the DJI Fly app. After take off the Mavic Mini stopped responding to any controller input, it accelerated to full power and flew away in a random direction. IMU, altitude, camera and GPS was working perfectly, yet the incorrect compass data totally screwed up the on-board flight controller and the Mavic was lost as a result of this.

    Did they change the compass calibrate procedure since the mavic pro?
    For the pro, first you'd hold it level and rotate it 360 or more. Then you'd point nose down, keep nose down, and rotate it 360 or more.

    • @jake24680

      I actually just downloaded the manual for the mini, and answered my own question. It is same process as mavic pro. you point nose down, and rotate while keeping nose down. although the photo they display shows nose up. Lol

      Not sure but the one Rick shows in this video is not how it is shown in the mavic mini owner manual. I would stick to the way they show in the manual. DJI would not steer us wrong in their own user manual. :)

    Is it OK to do the IMU calibration indoors? I know to do the compass calibration in the field away from metal and electrical instruments. To have the drone facing to the left is a bit ambiguous? I'm in Australia so your left is my right or not? Why left?

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Russel, you can so the IMU calibration indoors but not the compass. What you're doing with the IMU calibration is setting the vertical and horizontal "planes" for the quad so it flies level. The direction you spin is not really important as long as you consistent for both parts of the calibration. I hope that helps and happy flying!

I do it exactly how it shows in the tutorial. For one you said to spin it 2 or 3 rotations but it only tells you to do it 360° which is one rotation. Other than that you spin it completly different than it shows me on my tutorial. Is there more than one wag to do this cuz now im evdn confused

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thomas, there is more than one way to do it and I was following the directions on the application I was using at that time. I had the quad early before release and was using a Beta version of the DJI Fly app, which had diagrams that were changed for the final release. Either way, what you;re essentially doing with the compass calibration is letting the internal (digital) compass find North on both of the axis. You need to spin it vertically a few times until it can confirm North and then spin it vertically for it to do the same. Once it gets a sense of the direction in both planes, it will let you know you're good to go. The one mistake I see people making, which can affect the quad is to hold it at arms length and spin. This puts the rotation point 3 or more feet away from the quad and even though it seems like it will work, your compass will be off by a lot. Spin it tight and you'll be fine. I hope that helps and thanks for the post. Rick

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the post but you don't have to be exact with it's placement. The calibration is designed to find "relative" positions in reference to it's initial standing position of the desk. It needs to understand 90 degrees and 180 degrees in both the Pitch and roll positions so it can define it's range of travel. I've actually done this calibration in the field by simply holding the quad in my hands and it's worked well. If it's position is off by too much the calibration will fail and you can start over. Thanks again for the post and be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss anything. Rick

    I have a Mavic Air and I have to calibrate the compass every time I fire it up. Is this normal?

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're getting a compass error every time you go out to fly, that's unusual. The only thing I can think of that would cause that is if you're flying in an area with a lot of magnetic interference or you have a lot of metal around the quad when you power up. Try taking the quad to an open field, take off your watch and leave your phone and controller far away from you and power up the quad to see if that helps. if it does, there's something close to the quad on power-up that is messing with the compass.

    A compass needle is more sensitive to weakly magnetic materials. A mineral that is too faintly magnetic to be felt may still be observed to deflect a compass needle. Iron and steel will be attracted by a magnet. These metals will also deflect a compass needle, but metals such as aluminum and copper won't.

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the post and while I appreciate the follow-up, I was demonstrating the process they illustrated in the Beta version of the application, which was changed (both graphics and process) for the released version that came out on 11/11. Having said that, the process is super simple and is still valid. Essentially it only only requires the quad to find magnetic north twice in both the horizontal and vertical rotations to complete. The order and actual position of the drone while you rotate it is not critical. Spin it twice on its horizontal axis and twice on its vertical axis and you're all set.

    I only calibrate my drone if it has a 8 or more gps lock then it starts drifting or moving in circles when hovering.. That's the only thin I calibrate the compass, I never calibrated for a year even I change location 150 or 200km, more than that then I do a compass calibration.. And always take note, do not calibrate if you got a message "Warning Interference, GPS weak or Compass error" It has nothing to do with calibration.. Just think logic, what makes you think it will be fine to do a calibration if you already know that there's an interference that the apps told you? you're going to make it more worst if you try to calibrate it.. The best thing you could do is Avoid that location and change spot to fly..

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the post but you're mixing up two totally different technologies. GPS is a satellite positioning system that provides a location in 3D space for the drone to navigate. The compass is based on magnetic north and helps to keep the drone stable and navigating. You have no calibration control over the GPS, it just works. With the compass, you will have to calibrate it every so often. I never said to calibrate it every time you fly but if you've moved more than 50-100 miles from your last flight, it's a good idea to calibrate it since your position relative to magnetic North has changed. Lastly, nothing "interferes" with the compass except metal and only when you're close to a surface. If you're getting a compass warning, move the drone to another spot to takeoff.

  • @15PSI
    @15PSI 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    These calibration instructions are incorrect. Although the software may like Rick's method, it is incorrect. Horizontal is holding the drone flat (parallel to the ground) and spinning the drone around it's center axis. The vertical is also incorrect. Watch the illustration in the DJI software - it shows the correct method for calibration.
