Bought my 88 Blazer 4x4 a couple years ago with 90k original miles. 4.3 V6. A friend is pestering me to do this but we keep hitting a wall because of the 4x4 issue. I'm really impressed with this series. You're right - 2 years later theres still very little information on doing the 5.3 swap on a 4x4!
i have an 87 gmc jimmy 4x4 i will be doing and am looking for info please keep us updated on this swap and if you can when you are done maybe make a video on the modifications and parts needed, this would help me as well as a lot of other people too, thanks for taking the time to make this video
So glad to see this posted up. I have a 08 4x4 Silverado that the frame is going bad in, and the 4 8 is great with 156 thousand on it. That I been seriously thinking of putting on a blazer or jimmy that's also 4x4.
Keep updating about this build I'll be doin my 86 s10 4x4 truck this comin winter not many people swap the 4x4 too much work I've done 4 old school sbc swaps in them not easy bit no info makes it challenging the first time
When you did your exhaust manifolds, did you run into an issue with hitting the shock tower at all?? Where did you get your manifolds as I tried searching sng preformance and can not find anything about them?
I thought I was going to when I was looking at doing headers, but once I went with the exhaust manifold it all fit. You have to use the factory truck manifold one one side and the block hugger style cast manifold on the other. I mentioned this in another video. I bought my manifolds on Ebay.
I’m glad that you are doing this! Your giving me lots of useful information! You are the only one I have been able to find that is doing this particular swap. I am doing a rat rod project using a 88 four wheel drive S10 frame that currently has a 2.8 V6 in it. Unfortunately up to now I haven’t been able to find anyone that is doing this specific swap. Everything online is for a 2WD chassis with the 4.6. What are you doing for the transmission and transfer case and rear end? I’m assuming the the original ones won’t work.
Transmission is the 4l60e from the same 2005 Tahoe that the engine is from. The transfer case is a stock np231 and stock 10 bolt rear. The 231 I'm pretty certain will hold up fine but the rear axle is to be determined. Although it is the same basic axle as a Camaro so we'll see.
98-2000 camaro and firebird LS1 manifolds will fit but they are steel and you cut the flange off and use a piece of tubing to extend the manifolds and weld the flange back on. It works for later model zr2 s10 pick ups and blazers. Mine is a 2000 zr2 4x4 s10 and it's getting an L33 aluminum block 5.3L because my 4x4 is a torsion bar IFS and the Aluminum block 5.3 L33 weighs basically the same as the stock 4.3L that came in my truck. If your steering still doesn't clear with the earlier LS1 f-body (98-00 ls1 camaro and firebird manifolds) you can try to shift the steering over a bit or you can use the steering shaft from a jeep Cherokee
I have done a lot of small blocks in s10 and now I'm putting a big block 454 in the bottle fed beast so it's going to be a challenge and it's a 4x4 blazer also
thinking of doing a similar swap in my 92 s10 blazer 4dr 4x4 Thank you for the inspiration. may be bugging you in the future! any tips greatly appreciated
I bought a universal joint that would fit the shaft because I needed the extra space. I have since replaced the whole thing with a jeep Cherokee shaft to eliminate the rag joint. I would recommend that for sure.
Thank you I might end up doing that later on, I found a joint that fit, I have 85 Chevy s10 blazer that had the 2.8 in and it’s 4x4 I swapped in a 4.8 ls it’s not fully done yet have a couple for things I’m waiting on to get delivered to finish it.

I know, right!? I guess most people just do the 2wd. Thanks for watching!
I'm right there with you man I havea 99 Blazer 4x4
This is EXACTLY what I have been looking for. Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!

So what oil pan and mounts are you using? Keep us updated. Should make a fun ride
Wanting info as well
Looks like the milodon oil pan

I have the same truck but make a swap to vortec 4.3 injected, you dont have problems with the shift linkage?
I had to make a couple pieces to make it work but I'm using the stock rod.

Did you trim the crossmember for the oil pan to clear, and what oil pan did you use stock or aftermarket?
I didn't trim anything but the frame for the ac compressor. I used a milodon oil pan specific to LS swaps. It was very very close to the front diff.
I have a question about motor mounts... they're higher than the s10 truck, my swap mounts dont work. Clean truck, mine is a 1990
Are you sure you have the ones for the 4x4? The 2wd mounts are different than the 4x4 ones.
@@Sanium I have the 2wd truck. It's like the mounts are higher...

Good info, Jonathan. Thanks for commenting!
@@Sanium sweet man we all supposed to help rhats how we learn
Hell yes man thanks wanna see the whole thing parts order and special stuff to do to it to make it work or easier
Haha the farther away I get from the build date the more I forget. I'll try and get some of that together. In the process of painting it now.
@@Sanium awesome appreciate it man it's awesome build
What motor mount or plates did or are U using keep me updated for sure I'm presently building -1998 4wheel blazer with the same thoughts in mind
They are from dirty dingo. You have to make sure to get the ones for the 4x4. The 2wd LS swap mounts are different.
Dirty dingo makes awesome mounts I got a 91 4x4 5spd im gonna swap
I'm doing a 98 s10 blazer 4x4 with a 70 454 BBC but blazer is lifted 10 inches and 8 inches on body with 40s
I have done a lot of small blocks in s10 and now I'm putting a big block 454 in the bottle fed beast so it's going to be a challenge and it's a 4x4 blazer also
Haha yea that'll be a tight fit for sure!
THE OIL PUMP IS A MILODON 31083 about $400 i would love to see the clearance and close up pictures
Do happen to remember what the length is that you had to make your rear drive shaft
It's the stock driveshaft
I want to this with the gen v but nobody makes a pan yet.
New sub , great info man.
Thanks for the sub!
I got a 4x4 92 s10 blazer I want to know a price about how much you’d charge
I can pull old motor and transmission for u
I need to find one for 96 sonoma 4x4 V8
Swap.
will you be able to change the ac comp in the future without pulling the motor?
Nope. You might be able to raise the engine up and get it out, but here's to hoping everything is good and lasts a long time.
Ict Billit has relocated mounts that's my plan
Thank you!!
thinking of doing a similar swap in my 92 s10 blazer 4dr 4x4
Thank you for the inspiration. may be bugging you in the future!
any tips greatly appreciated
Sounds good. We need more fixed up dimes on the road!
What joint did you use for the top of the steering shaft
I bought a universal joint that would fit the shaft because I needed the extra space. I have since replaced the whole thing with a jeep Cherokee shaft to eliminate the rag joint. I would recommend that for sure.

Hey how did you hook up your ac?
I used the factory 5.3 AC compressor and had some custom lines made to adapt the new style compressor to the blazer ac system
Oh okay, that sounds simple enough
Keep me updated please because I have a Chevy s10 blazer 1987 4x4 a year older than yours
What oil pan are you using? Do you have remote oil filter?
Milodon 31083. And yes I'll be using a remote filter setup. There's definitely no room under there for a filter. Haha
@@Sanium a shorty filter works I think it's a p45 I believe
How could someone get ahold of you to ask questions
