It's great for home setups.
Perfect balance of style and detailing, one of a few people I don't watch at x2 speed to enjoy the story... nice spot with the metal filament.

It’s straight up a small metal shard and some loose metal shavings not any filament.
the best part of the video.... the outtakes, because it sows you how much do you now about coffee..

Nice review, thanks! I've just bought a Varia VS3 and it doesn't make a fine grind for an espresso. I set it for around 3 and coffee comes down in 5 sec, even when I set around 0-1... But it is also can bee seen on the grind that is not fine at all. I have checked everything inside the machine several times, now I don't have a clue what could happen with my grinder. Any ideas?
could be you calibrated it wrong - I did this too. when you set it to 0 (calibration point) you only have to turn it a tiny bit to get there. I was turning it a FULL rotation to get to 0. 🙃

And once youve done that just move it slightly to get it to zero - does that fix the issue?
Great review. I'd appreciate if you share what setting range you're using for espresso. Is it safe to grind at 1 or less than 1? Thanks in advance.
Hi, depends on the roast profile but generally I will grind between between 1.2 & 2 for espresso, If it’s a lighter roast I will set around 1-1.3 and consider a slightly longer preinfusion. I haven’t found myself needing to go lower than 1, what is your reason for wanting to grind below 1?
@@themrgumbatron thanks for your guidance and examples. It's not that I want to go so low. It's because I can't get fine enough grinds to build any pressure in the puck. Think I got some fault on my vs3.
@@bowieknife Hi there! I think I have the same issue... When I set it even under 1 it doesn't make a fine grind... Coffee comes down in 5 sec... Could you solve it since then?
@@fodorgraph hey, make sure the thin metal rings are in place below the conical burr and also below the bottom most sweeper

Did you contact Varia about the QC issues? I would like to hear how they respond, as I'm thinking of purchasing one of these and customer service is an important factor for me.
I think the dosing cup is small so it can fit the 54mm portafilters that Breville/Sage machines have. Also, a bigger cup would make it easier for the cup to hit the body of the grinder (not sure how much clearance there is).
Small correction: it should be 1% retention instead of 99%.
Overall this is a great video. Thanks for making it.
I am not OP but I also had QC issues with the finishing inside the burr housings and the hopper. They shipped out a part replacement within a few days. Their CS is really good, they even replied to me on a Sunday.
Pretty passive actually, I no longer have the grinder now. But I saw they released a second generation with some nice improvements, I’m just observing the community feed back on it, seeing it not able to get a hands on with one before pulling the trigger the second time around.
Which one is better, Ode II or VS3?
Both very different grinders, no fair comparison is possible. From my usage and experience. All round performance would be the VS3, the Ode II is geared towards drip and immersion coffee brewing styles only and not espresso despite the new burr set yielding a finer grind (great for lighter roasts). I also prefer the aesthetics of the VS3.
Yeah the quality control isn't very good - the provided allen wrench is so poorly made it doesn't fit into the screws

the grinder had QC issues when I receive it. So yes it was not what I expected and I no longer own it.
@@themrgumbatron I believe the Gen 2 has updated some issues the original might have had..
