  • @wolftal1178
    @wolftal1178 2 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    I’m afraid to say that I would still choose the Venator, partly because I’m a clone wars fan. But also there are a lot more advantages to it, depending on what style of warfare you would use. For example although they didn’t have very powerful weapons, they were actually far more long-range then the Imperial ships, who were extremely powerful but mostly only at close quarters. Also the Venator could carry nearly 10 times the amount of fighters while their long range canons had a disruptor perk that meant it could help take down Shields, and was far more manoeuvrable and quick. So between the two of them the Venator, if it used gorilla warfare tactics, I think could possibly win.
    One of the main drawbacks of the Imperial was that they designed their ships purely as flagship destroyers and increased its Heavy cannons at the cost of anti-fighter turrets. Whereas the Venator who had to fight swarms of droid fighters during the clone wars had more fighter turrets then heavy cannons.
    So all the Venator had to do was stay out of range while giving it a few pot shots, and sending all of its fighters to the Imperial star destroyer which would have trouble picking them off. if the imperials sent their tie fighters to try and take the Venator down, they would’ve been quickly shot down by the Venator’s many fighter defences.
    In many ways I’m very surprised the new Republic didn’t use them as their new task ships, They were small so they weren’t overly foreboding to any planet they were near, they could actually land on planet if needed, they were associated with the Jedi during the clone wars, so it would’ve been a very good symbol of peace. They were powerful enough to fight off pirates and smugglers as an official warship, they were quick and small which meant they could patrol a lot of backwater systems.
    They acted as cargo vessels which would’ve been brilliant for humanitarian aid or evacuation, and they could take a huge majority of fighters. All in all a very good round purpose ship.

    • @pubcle
      @pubcle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The close quarters bit is not true at all. The ISD could still hit harder at longer distances. The ISD had one of its major roles as planetary bombardment, it had plenty of range and was designed to lockdown entire systems in conventional warfare. The ISD was at least of similar speed and maneuverability to the Venator. I don't know where you're getting this nonsense.
      The Venator is honestly a terrible design, it's trying to be too many things and is thus ineffective at all. It's not a dedicated carrier, it's not a dedicated command vessel, it's not a dedicated brawler. The ISD was a full invasion compliment, sure, but it had specific roles it would continue to do better than any other ship of the same status, even later when the Nebula would enter service the Imp II still could outclass it in a head-to-head, though the Nebula was a much more efficient use of resources.
      You need to dedicate to a primary role and then have other vessels pick up the rest of the roles for the most part. You're not a singular ship, you're a ship in a fleet. There's a reason the Venator never returned while the VSD and ISD would continue regular usage hundreds of years after their introductions and still be capable of holding up to some of the enemy fire.

  • @patrickokeefe4603
    @patrickokeefe4603 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    The Venator class was a better design because its focus on fighters and bombers was a better choice in ship to ship combat, as the Venator could use snubfighters and bombers to attack enemy capital ships either from outside of the range of the enemy ships’ turbo lasers or at a range at which the enemy’s turbo lasers would be less effective, and also made the ship good for planetary invasions as could carry more ship-planet transports than a Victory class.
    Although the Victory class is better at close range and close range engagements are sometimes unavoidable, the Venator class was good enough in close range engagements that it would not be worth picking a Victory over a Venator due to the Venator being substantially better in all other scenarios.
    That being said, if I was designing a fleet then ideally I would want both classes as including one or two Victory class star destroyers to a fleet of venators would make exploiting the Venator class’ weakness much more difficult so I would be willing to have one less venator to have one or two victory class star destroyers in the fleet to escort the fleet’s remaining Venator class star destroyers.
    However, if I had to send either a single Venator or a Single Victory class star destroyer to conduct a mission without support from the rest of the fleet then, unless there was a specific reason to think that the Victory class’ abilities were needed or that the circumstances would allow the enemy to more easily exploit the Venator class’ weakness, I would send a Venator class star destroyer every time.

And if it was backed up by a Venator's fighter spam then they would be well protected. The Imperator class was meant to be the Republic's real 'heavy battleship' type ship. In my mind it was developed because of the rise of things like the Providence class and the Bulwarks and other larger, very powerful ships. And I'd guess that an ISD would probably be fairly rare if the Republic had survived, forming the core of a fleet, whilst supported by VSDs and Venators. But with the resources of the galaxy at hand the Empire just spammed them.

    Honestly I think they should have built off the torpedo design of the Victory. Have these ships sitting back and dishing out devastating torpedo barrage on enemy ships. You can even use a special flak torpedo that'll shred any incoming starfighters by putting out a cloud of death via shrapnel.
    But that would be a tactically smart idea, which the imperials are not. They are too busy with ruling through fear and using the Tarken doctrine so they are more focused on huge ISDs, super ISDs and planet killing space stations to actually make a tactically smart fleet. Both taking a lot of material to make, needing a lot of support ships to defend and I'd you'd use that material on a smaller ships you'd be able to make a lot more too

    I find it funny that the Republic Navy prioritizes their ships in the opposite way we do on Earth. We use Battleships(and every other ship) as supports groups for our carriers, where as the RN uses their carriers to support their Battleships and Destroyers.

    In legends, the Rebels used a modified venator as a headquarters ship at one point (after battle of yavin, forget if it was before or after hoth, but I think it was before hoth). It got shredded in an imperial trap (caused by a brainwashed rebel navigator and mathematician helping the imperial fleet led by Vader find it) though and barely escaped into hyperspace to likely be scrapped immediately afterwards (most of it was vented, artificial gravity was malfunctioning as were inertial dampening systems, command bridge was almost completely destroyed, most of its crew was killed, with Leia Organa herself suffering severe injuries while onboard).

    Personally I would have picked a Venator Class Star Destroyer.
    Whilst the Victory Class was more heavily armored and sported more mainstay turbolasers. The vessel could only ever use those weapons in one place at one time.
    The Venator on the other hand could attack multiple targets with its main weapon, It's Starfighter compliment.
    While the Venator sits back at Republic space. It's Starfighters could conduct sorties on unsuspecting Separatist targets with fast anti capital ship fighters and then jump back to Republic space once they've dropped their pay load.
    I could simply repeat this strategy. Taking pieces and chunks out of Separatist blockades to make way for a full invasion force. Without risking damage to my flagship itself.
    The Venator was more or less the Scalpel whereas the Victory was the Hammer. Both useful in their own right, but if I had to choose. The Venator would be my go to flagship.

    As a commander, I would choose the Venator as my personal flagship. But I would also have it be the only carrier of the group, while other ships protected it.
    Ideally, a battle group would be one Venator, two Victorys, 4 Arquitens, 2 Dreadnoughts, and between 2-4 Consular Corvettes.
    The Victories, along with 2 of the Corvettes and Arquitens would be the spearhead of an assault, backed up by fighters from the Venator. The Dreads would stay back to defend the Venator as last lines of defense, with two other Corvettes hanging back to watch the battle unfold and strike where needed.
    Venators are ideal command ships for battle groups, but I wouldn't want it to ever be by itself.

    Victory class all the way. The Venator also lacks a central support beam that runs lengthwise through the ship (due to the massive dorsal hanger in the front of the ship), making the Venator essentially two ships glued together. One well placed bomb in that massive hanger could have the potential to just break the ship in two. The Venator is a great support carrier, but not a great front line cruiser.

  • @mrkshply
    @mrkshply 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Something I just now realized is how these ships work so well within classical navel combat. I mean wind powered man'owars right up to 20th century battleships. Their most powerful weapon is the broadside. They can bring the most and biggest guns they have from the side of the ship. The traditional desired position of these ships is called "Crossing the T" where your ships have their broadsides facing the fronts or backs of the enemy, like the cross bar of the letter T. The star destroyers likewise seem most powerful and best defended from their broadsides. They're weakest from the top and below because not only do they have fewer weapons pointing in those directions (fact check me plz) but also because their surface is the most flat from those orientations. From the side they are skinnier, and their hulls create the greatest deflection. That makes them harder to hit and when you do hit them your projectile is more likely to bounce off. Angled armor also increases the amount of armor that a projectile must go through. If you have 3 in. armor but then tilt it, you then have 4 inches of armor that must be penetrated. If you look at modern tanks, they have slopped or rounded armor for this reason. This would explain why in TLJ they attack with a bombardment from the weakest direction of the star destroyer, the top. Whether the model creators realized it or not they seemed to have designed a functionally superior battle star ship design. We might one day see real star destroyers in the galactic navies of humans. Neat huh?

  • @_spooT
    @_spooT 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I mean, in a surprise attack, you would have a slight advantage in a Victory due to its heavy armor. Even if the crew is caught off-guard, the armor and shield would still give them enough time to counter. A venator would be wiped out in a mater of minutes. However, in a ship to ship battle I would choose the venator, use all of its assets to my advantage. It had the range due to its massive number of fighter, bomber and support ships in its arsenal. You could scout the enemy and set up ambush or surprise attacks and hit them from there while the venator is at a safe distance. If the enemy comes close, the Venators weaponry were pretty much like that of a carriers. It can dish out tons of damage due to it's ridiculous rate of fire, not to mention you can change the settings of the cannons. A pack of Venators would be deadly especially if they concentrate on one target not to mention they have light craft to support them. They are also much more quicker and more maneuverable compared to the Victory. But if I would go on planetary assault, I would go with Victory. Simply put I don't really know why I'm comparing the two since they are intended for different purposes. Would rather use them both in tandem. The Venators fighter and bomber wing to strike the enemy from afar while the Victory protects the Venators in case of surprise attack

    I really like the victory I. I feel like the most flexible fleet composition would consist of the Imperial, Victory, and Venator ships since they all really complement each other well and cover each other’s weaknesses pretty effectively. Starfighter screens and attack squadrons through the venator, as well as point defense. Imperial can slug it out with the best of them, and the victory can act as a long range artillery piece with its missiles. If they get the engine upgrade, even better, since they can act as destroyers

    Were there any naval battles on record where the Victorys were used in number well into the front, as battleships to duke it out with CIS battlewagons exclusively (perhaps escorted by Crusader anti-starfighter corvettes - unless they are actually loaded with point defense cannon), while Venators and Acclimators were held in the rear for their designed roles, somewhat protected?
    It would be very cathartic watching an animation of Victorys and V-Wings dominating Munificients, Recuscators, and Providences, while Venators sat safe, tending the starfighter squadrons. And then after orbital supremacy having been achieved, watching around eight Acclimators maneuver into atmospheric entry to unload over 100,000 Clones to take control of the surface.
    All this with zero losses in space of Clone ground units, due to having exactly the correct starships in the exactly correct positions, exactly performing their engineered and intended roles.

    I would have chosen the Venator, after all, command doesn't need to be heavily fortified so long as it remains camouflaged. Knowing personally the exact qualifications and extremities of performance those you're commanding would also be of greater use to an effective commander. Lastly, as Jedi commanders often descended to deploy ground forces the loss of such a craft would have proven far less devastating to the logistics of fleet dispersal (remember, republic forces were stretched pretty thin... it's logical to assume that with the addition of a Victory came a loss of allocated Venators). I also would have personally preferred a Victory reinforcement vs starting off with one, this ensures that the most devastating ship in our arsenal is in peak untarnished and fully loaded at a point in the fight where presumably the enemy has taken at least some damages and the appearance comes more as a surprise/shock to the enemy so we can deal a far more effective counter attack. For me, all these factors and more point me towards the Venator as my command ship.

I’d want my task force to have a mix of both, as envisaged by Leera (Lira?), and maybe with anti-starfighter escorts aplenty - prolly the Arquitens light cruiser, and a bunch of Crusader and (my favorite) CR-90 corvettes - and of course Acclimators. I really think I’d want to send the VSDs and Crusaders in to smash it up with the CIS capitals and try to protect the Venators and Acclimators to make sure I can scoop back up my Clone boys and starfighters. I’d also order up that ventral cannon that young Vader dreamt up for each Venator, and also have two or three installed on each Victory.
