    Glad everything worked out. Rather impressive that 19 years of tire wear really made that much difference in properly fitting the tire chains. I guess a new set of tractors tires is on the 2024 Christmas list now. LOL

    Now I will tell you a story, but most won't believe it. Years back I was helping an old guy with some of his farm work in the dead of winter. His Tractor was old I have no idea what kind it was it was long ago. The road we had to use had maybe about 2 inches of ice on it and he wanted to bring his split wood closer to the house. Now he had a 4x4 truck but that was not making it on this long icy road. He told me to go get the Tractor. I did and it was like driving on a dry dirt road without spinning. This old man made Cleets to fit all 4 tires. This looked like flat bars instead of the chains and each bar had thick spikes. I never seen anything like it in my life not then and to this day never seen it ever again. Now it wasn't a smooth ride, But I promise you it never had a problem on ice or mud.
    I told my dad about it, and he said son the old guys know what they want and need, they don't buy it if they can make it. I worked for this old guy doing odd jobs I was just 12 and 14 years old. Not one time did this old man have a problem starting that tractor. I was so impressed by this old man I had the up most respect for him. I asked how he has never had a problem starting his Tractor up in the coldest of mornings. He said Son if you take care of the things you own, they will take care of you.
    Then he walks me into his barn and showed me an old model A Ford that had skis on the front of the tires. I never saw that before in my life as well. He said back in the day that was how they would drive around in the winter. My family moved and I never got to talk to him again but remember a lot he taught me.

    Hello and good informative video. I also use Quick Links on my chains but they come loose. Please use Lock Tite (Blue or Red) on the Quick Link threads. Inspect them every time you use the Chains. Just takes 1 minute and might prevent a chain getting wrapped around an axle.

    Greetings Gord, Lee here, hoping you and the family are keeping well. I have the ice chains on the rear of my tractor, I put an ice chain on one front tire for steering on ice. I was told not to put chains on both front tires because the front rear end is smaller in size than the rear and it will not take the stress and tourque if you get into a hard place and it gets to spin. This way it has a tire with the least amount of traction and it will spin with no stress. You and your family keep well, later

    I saw a video installing chains like this, but I can't find that video to comment. The video showed jacking up the tractor to put on the chains instead of driving over them. OMG, what a difference. It was so much easier to install the chains with the tire off the ground. You just roll the chains over the tire and connect. After all these years, I can learn and grow.... And not just more round.

    I like Guy have never to date found myself in a spot that I needed chains. I also do not think I have ever worn down a set of tires that much. Also I usually run R1 tires so a deeper heavy lug tire. The area where I live (even when I lived in hills) was a row crop farming area. So AG tires were the most common in stock tires. Whole front tires for my tractor usually had to be ordered, rears were often in stock as they fit the front of many tractors used by farmers.

    I have a very steep paved driveway (13 degrees (23% slope) at the worst) and a Kubota with a rear snow blower and chains on all four wheels. Even with chains, heavy wet snow over about 6-8 inches makes it hard to snow blow up hill. As a backup I use a honda blower with tracks to break the trail.

      @@GPOutdoors @jimscheffler8174 I bought the Aquiline MPC chains hoping that they'd be gentler on my driveway but unfortunately they're marring up the asphalt. I'm using a NH Boomer 40hp with ballasted rears, so about 4300lbs all in, and I'm wondering if I need to buy a milder chain due to the weight.

    Well you got me on this one.
    I don’t have any good stories about chains.. hahah
    I only have turf tires on two of my tractors and my Big FarmAll has the Aggie tires on it but it weighs in at 8000 to 9000 lbs.. It usually has no problems except on pure ice..
    But I rarely use it in the winter..
    It’s the big boy of my tractors.. hahahaha
    I want to wish you and Carol and family the happiest of New Year.. I know this Holiday season has been tough for you. ❤️
    Please wish the boys also a Happy New Year for me too.
    Cheers my friend.

    Front chains will be “night & day” difference. Those chains were probably cheaper than a new set of rear tires these days…, hahaha. Did the chain manufacture recommend those “quick links”..? The only reason i ask, is my experience with them is their weakness, they bend and stretch. I think the company has a similar type link that is made from the same chain material, and can be installed, and then hammered or pressed closed.
    Great video,
    Thank you sir.

    Were the quick links a long term solution? I would wonder how well they would take the spinning and chain slap (if there is any). Great video and yet another example of good friends.

    If those are the R4 industrial tires they don't have the best traction anyway, they may last longer and that tread is on everything it seems but they do the best on a hard surface. Does the hydrostatic transmission tractor have steering brakes? I've not used an all wheel drive compact tractor (or hydro) but have seen some use front chains only (because they're cheaper) and wondered how they stop because the tractors I've run only have rear brakes. Have a Happy New year.

    I am undecided as to just Front Chains on mine for steering control when moving Snow. ??
    The Rear Tires on My DK are pretty big/wide.

      Morning Mike. Wish I could help. I have never used front chains. But I do find the front often won't grip in corners whole blowing snow so I have to lift the blower out of float to turn the corner (weight onto the front axle). Good luck out there!

    • @Ytiunegni
      @Ytiunegni 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had front chains and rear chains for my DK. With the front and rear chains on, the tractor was an absolute beast. I'm convinced it was practically unstoppable. After the first two years, I stopped putting on the front chains. The rear chains provided enough traction on their own where I didn't need to bother with the front chains. And I never really experienced any problems steering with just the rear chains. Perhaps because my tires were newer and still had good tread, or the angles of my hills were different. If you're looking to purchase only one set of chains, I would definitely go with the rear tires. Having chains on your rears will help much more than chains on the front, in regard to traction. This is because the majority of the weight is on the rear tires and not the front. Additionally when you're pushing snow with a plow or the loader, the front end tends to "ride up" as you push more and more snow, taking weight off the front. This further reduces the benefit from having chains on the front. And lastly, putting on the front chains wasn't any easier than the rear. Since the tires were smaller, I figured putting the chains on the front would be easier. However applying front chains was probably more difficult than the rear because of the front is the steering axle. The tires kept turning with every little movement as I would try to adjust the chains or tighten them down. Frankly, that's the reason I don't use front chains anymore (and the fact that the rear chains are enough). All that is to say... if you're looking to get only a front set or a rear set of chains, I'd definitely go with the rear.

    Great video Gord. I am thinking of ordering a set of these. Looking for a good all purpose set of chains and I also have R4 tires on my LX2610 cab model tractor. Besides the chains is there anything else I should be ordering with them?

    • @Ytiunegni
      @Ytiunegni 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      There is nothing else you'll need to install them. Although come spring when the chains are removed, I like to hose them off with water to remove the dirt and then I spray mine down with Fluid Film. The Fluid Film helps to keep the chains from binding up and easy to maneuver. Might be worth picking up a can of that, or some kind of oil that you can apply to the chains. But in terms of applying the chains, you won't need anything else.
