    Eternity is within reach with IWC’s first secular perpetual calendar, which won’t need adjusting until 3999, and a moon phase indicator that will remain accurate for 45 million years!
    IWC’s Portugieser Eternal Calendar is the undisputed calendar masterpiece of the Schaffhausen-based brand for Watches and Wonders 2024. A colossal technical milestone, the Eternal Calendar marks the brand’s first secular perpetual calendar. Unlike a perpetual calendar that will need a correction in 2100, the Eternal Calendar is fitted with a 400-year gear that overrides the Gregorian calendar’s complex leap year rule exceptions and skips three leap years over four centuries. In short, it will not need to be adjusted until 3999! Combined with a hyper-precision moon phase display that will deviate from the Moon’s orbit by one day in 45 million years, this Eternal Calendar in a platinum Portugieser case is a tour de force.

    So what if IWC is no longer in business in the year 3999 to make the adjustment? Will I or my descendants get their money back?

      Most watch enthusiasts don't have children so that's not a problem

    But you still have to service the thing every few years though.

    You’ll still need to change the century slider when 2100 hits. So not fully secular? Thanks for the great review.

      No you won’t need as this is also a disc that will work until 2399. That left disc is printed with 21, 22 and 23 to take these years into account. Look at the video at 09:18 you’ll see the left disc 😊

    • @kahsings
      @kahsings 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Monochrome-watches but the left disc is not gear operated right? It needs to be adjusted by a watchmaker. Not that most of us will be alive in 2100 :)

    • @Monochrome-watches
      @Monochrome-watches  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@kahsings the left disc is controlled by the watch and is linked to the other gears. What will be needed is the change the disc in 2400 for one printed with 24, 25 and 26… if ever a lot of future generations keep the watch in the family 😛

      @@Monochrome-watches thanks for clarifying. I’m still not convinced that the left panel / sliding disc is gear linked. Moreover, like you said, the century slide will still have to be installed by a watchmaker (hopefully IWC has kept to its tradition of a wax sealed glass vial :) so it’s not 100% secular… (not that any secular perpetual calendar will be service free either for that long :p)

      Yea, it does.

      Yup! The only adjustment needed isn't untill the year 3999 (theoretically, if you keep it running correctly). And even then, the adjustment needed is down to the fact we as a society haven't decided if the year 4000 in the Gregorian calendar is a leap year or not. So no clue if it will be 365 or 366 days....

    The Gegorian calendar is an algorithm 8:36 that determines which years are leap years.
    It has no limits and the year 3999 has no special meaning. This comment is repeated over and over and is false. There may be limit in the watch mechanism, but not in the Gegorian calendar itself.
