Lions vs. Vikings (Week 17, 1999) Classic Highlights

  • After the recent passing of the legendary defensive line coach John Teerlinck, I thought I'd showcase a game where John Randle, one of guys he helped turn into a superstar, had a career game. Randle called Teerlinck "Mr. Miyagi" when it came to coaches. Teerlinck had a large part in shaping the careers of greats like Chris Doleman, Kevin Greene, Neil Smith, Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis.
    In this matchup, the Lions come to the Dome for the final game of the season, and NFC playoff seeding is hanging in the balance.

    the most underrated Viking team this team had the ability to go all the way but the greatest show on turf just had to appear that year

      This team was absolutely better than the 2000 team. At least in 99 they were peaking late.

      The worst pass defense in the NFL that season.

    Had the Vikings lost IIRC these teams would have rematched a week later at the Silverdome. This was essentially for the 4 seed.

    God dang! If Jeff George wasn't such a head case dude could have made the Hall with that arm. Unreal. Lol

    I've said it many times. Watching Jeff George throw a football is one of the greatest things ever. And he saved the Vikings that year, even if his ball security on sacks was less than stellar lol

    You know, Jeff George was really good that year. Imagine if Daunte hadn't been waiting in the wings.

      Was Dante on that team???? I thought he wasn't drafted until April of 99, I could be wrong. George was very good that season, but when he made no effort to recover a fumble against the Rams in the playoffs, he was done. Denny was pissed at him (rightfully so) once Denny was pissed at a player. They were gone

      @@rodellis2836 yes Daunte was on the 99 team he was a rookie

      @@rodellis2836 so was Center Jeff Christie. Sure Matt Birk was waiting in the wings, but Christie had a history of botching snaps, especially in the playoffs. In the '97 wildcard game he lost two of them. In the NFC Championship Christie botched a huge one when the Vikings were driving. I think Coach Green took that into account as well.

    The 1999 Vikings team. I swear, so many one score games. Same with the 2000 team.
    The 1998 team however. Haha.

    My personal opinion, they let Jeff George go way too early, only one season with the team and a Culpepper waiting in the wings, they should have given George one more season just to see if he could have!! Culpepper only had success in the NFL with Minnesota cuz of the receivers he had!

    • @deanladue3151
      @deanladue3151 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But when Dennis Green told George's agent to "Shop around" during the 2000 off season, the writing was on the wall that Green didn't want him back.

  • @deanladue3151
    @deanladue3151 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Jeff George clearly benefited from Ray Shermans offensive system in '99. Unlike Cunningham, who never really was never able to figure it out.

    this game should not have been nearly this close with the talent on the Vikes roster. Lions had Herman Moore, that's it. was it denny green that held the 98-00 vikes back?

    If this vikings team didn't have such a trash secondary they could have won it all. How their Defensive line gets consistent pressure yet guys are constantly open so pathetic 🙄🙄... I remember this team i was 17 years old Hitchcock was 🔥 🗑

    • @deanladue3151
      @deanladue3151 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It didn't help that the Vikings secondary coach was Richard Solomon. Who was a flat out terrible coach, but was also Dennis Greens best friend. In fact Green was fired in '01 because he refused to fire Solomon at the request of Red McCombs. Many star Viking players (Carter, Moss, Culpepper, Randle, Griffith) personally didn't like Solomon.
