    This was very helpful. Just rebuilt my steering rack instead of buying a knock-off or rebuild. Should be good for another 200k miles!

    2:32 It is (depth). That's what adds resistance to the rack. You want a certain amount of resistance to your input, otherwise any little bump driving down the freeway will cause you to either have to put a lot of muscle into keeping it straight or the car will wonder all over the road.

    That power steering rack was made by Kiichiro Toyoda. The founder of Toyota motors.

    Great video, thank you so much. One note don't you have to lube the oring before you install the pipe back in? If you don't isn't there a chance it roll off.

    What part of the rack could make a popping noise when going from lock to lock? My 04 v8 4runner has developed this noise. Lots of new parts LCA , UCA, New ball joints, inner and outer tie rods, a new OEM Intermediate steering shaft and a new Dobinsons lift. All less than 9 months old. Probably 8k street miles and a few moderate easy east coast trails
    I've checked torque on all hardware All I'm left with is the rack. I'm super curious of the failure point Thanks!!

    • @GibsonGarage
      @GibsonGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess the pinion could be skipping on the rack, but I've never heard of that. It's more likely mounting bolts for something or a bad ball joint

    nice video gibson i need to ask you how do u get some specification for assembly ,like the steering preload and how do you get you center of the steering?

    • @GibsonGarage
      @GibsonGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's probably a torque value for the preload but I just put it back exactly where it was. The centering is easy just count the rotations and put the rack in the center and make sure your steering wheel is also centered before removal and make sure it doesn't move

      @@GibsonGarage i hear you the problem is i have a steering that the already strpped the problem is i have to put it together ,so i need specification please help and the side bolt that you mark and used how many threads left after tight it ??

    • @GibsonGarage
      @GibsonGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      2.2 steering wheel straight and slide on the shaft and see if it spends the same amount of rotations to the left as it does the right if not adjust the shaft on the splines accordingly

    Toyoda was the correct spelling of the founder. In America it got renamed.

    You should sell the speciality tools as a kit.

  • @michaelloney2715
    @michaelloney2715 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey man can you post up measurements of that 8 sided nut you made, like i know you said 32.2mm/ 1.27" but whats the rough ID of the hole in the center and whats the lenght of the flats on the out side of it?

    • @ligeriffic
      @ligeriffic ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The OD of the pinion shaft is 25mm. I made my tool out of a 1" ID PVC riser from the hardware store. It already had an octagonal shape on it so I just had to file the shape down to the 32.2mm dimension. The ID was 23.5mm so I had to enlarge that with my rotary tool. Took about an hour after I got back from the store.

    Love rebuilding stuff, but with racks it’s so much easier for me to remove it, drop at the rack shop with my rebuild kit, then pick it up that afternoon. They have all the special tools to knock this out quick.

    The last kanji in toyota can be pronounced da. In Japanese it is common to change ta to da if it makes the word easier to say.
