  • A re-review of sorts of the Akai MPC One... Its workflow has grown on me a ton, but recent firmware updates have given me significant concerns about its stability as a platform.

    I just got my hands on the plus. Let me tell you, I have the Digitakt, Octatrack , and the Analog Rytm and while I love all 3 and would never sell either of them, I’m falling in love with the MPC One. It’s everything I always wanted in a Dawless standalone machine.

      This is a great point, and It’s interesting you say this, as my SH-2 was the exact reason I ended up getting an MPC One instead of other sequencers.
      However, I had to grab a CV.OCD Gate Boost to get the +5v from the MPC up to the +7.5v the SH-2 was needing to see.
      Did you have to increase the voltage as well? If so, what did you choose to go with? Just curious.

    I am forever grateful to Gabe for pushing me over the edge during my procrastination and over-analysis of what Groovebox to buy. I finally dropped the hammer on an MPC One and wondered where it had been all my life. I immediately wished I had bought it when it was $699 instead of $899, but oh well. My biggest concern was the number of people slagging off the workflow, but honestly it was the exact workflow I was looking for. It can take a lot of steps to get some things done but once you have the basics down, creating patterns and stringing them together is fantastic. I think the building-block approach it uses is logical, at least for my brain. I don't use it as deeply as others so I haven't faced many weird quirks and bugs, but I see where that would be very frustrating for heavy users. Looking past that, it is an otherwise pretty amazing piece of kit. I have a Studiologic Sledge so believe me, I know how to look past a slew of bugs to see the shiny object on the other side. Despite the constant introduction of new bugs in each update, which is disappointing and annoying, at least Akai are actually making updates and there is progress. Compared to some other manufactures who dump equipment months into it, it's hard not to root for this thing.

I haven't regretted it so far although I also hate the bugs that are in the MPC software. Fortunately you can downgrade if it annoys you too much.
    I still use the One now and then as I'm relaxing on my couch. The form factor, the amount of physical buttons and the fairly low price makes this (for me at least) a no-brainer to buy.

    I looooove the MPC One, just got it last week, it's been super easy to learn, a huge asset to my workflow both on and off the computer. I love working standalone and bringing my work into a DAW later, but works just as well in unison with DAW, creating music on the fly. In my opinion its the greatest standalone drum machine/groovebox type hardware there is, but of course its all up to ones individual preference.

    Excellent vid as always, Gabe. Akai is insane for charging $350 and up for plugins when Hype and the others truly cover a LOT of ground. It makes me mad that the MPC One launched at $699 and is now $899, and they're charging even more. So many free plugins do everything those plugins do, and then some. Granted, you can't use the One as a third-party plugin host, BUT, you can use MPC Beats as a plugin host.
    I feel that people need to be aware of the upselling/scam stuff some companies pull.
    And the updates? Yeah. ABSOLUTELY. I'm sticking with 2.10.1 and not moving an inch. Not an inch.
    I still love my One, two years after buying it. And I will, for years to come, as long as it continues to work. Some clunkiness, as you mentioned, but in general, it's a good piece of gear. Still stoked I got an open-box one for only $530.

    I’m a career software engineer. When new features break old functionality it tells me there’s tight coupling going on, typically suspect with poor design choices. This may also be because they’ve been forking and iterating on previous major releases which simply just inherits the old problems. This is ironic because it’s endemic of larger teams rather than smaller ones :|

    It’s an incredibly powerful machine and the stock plugins are fine. You can make pretty much anything you like with it, I just find the workflow annoying and clunky and I have had mine for two years. I usually reach for other gear unless I need something specific that only the MPC does simply because it’s much less fun and immediate than a lot of other gear I use.

In my opinion it's kinda losing it's purpose as a fun device for making some beats. Instead we're forced spending hours online looking for work arounds and fixes. I really hope it will get better, but it's a pattern we see in a lot of other stuff aswell; adding more and introducing new bugs instead of making sure the current content is running smooth and steady. Let's hope Akai is watching your videos.

    I can also utilise the clip programmes much better because I can launch groups of clips from the ipad , similar to scenes on the force, but better.

    I *love* the "bunch of smart people who aren't talking to each other" observation, it's spot on. The UX is janky and it seems they struggle to keep it all cohesive and "together".
    My biggest gripe with the MPC is a minor detail that then cascaded into a bigger and bigger problem for me. That detail is the reverb. Honestly, it's not great and sounds very metallic and unpleasant compared to most more CPU intensive algorithms. That's problematic because it means I'm forced to export the project at some point to finalize things in the DAW. If I used Ableton, that would have been a smooth ride, but with Reason (my DAW of choice), it becomes a chore unless you're fine with just exporting the audio stems as they are, something I'd rather not because I tend to change things up even when I'm in the final mixing phase.
    Then there are other limitations that feel annoying at times, such as the no-more-than-4-inserts-per-program limitation. Once I'm back in the DAW world, I realize that I might be fooling myself when thinking I'm so much more productive on the MPC. Sure, getting from 0-80% *is* faster, but once you start to get to the details, you realize you could have built this sound or that effect chain better in the DAW, and you waste hours recreating stuff without losing the essence of what you were trying to achieve.
    I don't know, but for me, I've started to try to make music directly in the DAW instead. And you know what? It's not that bad. I do wish there was a *really* integrated controller for Reason, because there's no doubt that that's the biggest gripe I have with any DAW workflow. But by learning the keyboard shortcuts, it really isn't that terrible. And you get a ton of benefits too, such as the ability to use your Bluetooth in-ears, mix on the go, and if your anything like me, your computer is always with you, super portable and completely silent (Macbook Air) and ready to go in a second. No groovebox comes close to that compatibility, portability and immediacy (in terms of being ready to jam with). I feel funny writing all this given my sunk cost in hardware, but it's true. Doesn't mean I'll stop using hardware, but it probably means I will not use the MPC as my centerpiece item in the future.

      Ill add learn the shortcuts in ableton (or whatever daw) and u have an almost perfect groovebox. Id really hope that all this dawless effort by people and companies would go to make the computer more playlable instead of the mouse/move/click thing. Something like the push, maschine... but done better. Or a laptop with a build in interface. Things like that.

    • @sinewaymusic
      @sinewaymusic ปีที่แล้ว

      @@afxtwinreverb yeah that would have been amazing. As soon as I go back to the DAW, I keep searching for the perfect midi controller instead. Even something as basic as a main knob that you can use to twist the currently focused soft knob/fader would have been amazing. It's actually amazing that such universal controls still do not exist. And yes, 100% agree on learning shortcuts and leveraging all of the built-in midi players, scales & chord modes and other things that can really turn the DAW into a groovebox with ease.

      @yodab.at1746 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was a reason user for years, it was the only music program I ran, and I knew it inside out keyboard shortcuts an all. For me it was the sound quality, not of the soundcard, but the compression in reason. For me, the akai is much better, but every now and then I miss aspects of Reason, the effects are better and better manipulated. I used a behringer controller and on the fly mixing was great. But tbh, I love the mpc more, for me it allows me to focus better on the overall aspects of being creative. Sometimes it's drawbacks actually lead to creative ideas stemming from workarounds.

    You hit the nail on the head about Akai seeming like a bunch of talented folks who don't talk to each other. My first sampler was the octatrack, which I could never fully wrap my head around. Long story short I sold it for an MPC one, which has been much more intuitive for me. There's something about the workflow that I still don't love. I've been considering, for creativity's sake, getting a digitakt to make my samples and loops and to push myself out of the very DAW-centric MPC style. I'm not sure what the move is. Maybe I should have given the octatrack more time. I picked my MPC One up for $299, so not much of a loss lol.

    Great vid as always G! I think the solution is just for people not to get too carried away with buying all the paid plugins, as should be the case for any device, standalone, DAW or otherwise. Its easy to be enamored and seduced by a new plugin that comes out, I personally do all the time. But with the MPC One, I've found that creating a keygroup out of a sample, manipulating it's parameters and stacking those sounds (as you demonstrate in this vid), is more than enough for my creative demands. If I like a plugin from a DAW, I simply sample it and use it in MPC as I please. I've used the kitmaker as well, it works like a charm if you sample a range of keys from a VST. As for the bugs and crashes, I haven't experienced any of that but fingers crossed! Anyways, carry one bro, you've got awesome content, keep it coming and I'll be anxious to hear more killer synthwave from you!

    I love my Live 2 - unlike some, I haven't experienced too many issues with it outside of the recent 2.11.5 update (which i promptly downgraded). Anything that I've found annoying or somewhat problematic is more design decisions that I've figured out how to work around.
    I'm coming from 17 years of producing music on Ableton in the box and I've experienced my fair share of issues and feature focus that i disagreed with - as well as long standing issues that never seem to get resolved.
    I think it's just part and parcel to software these days (and not just music software).

    I haven’t really come across any of the bugs mentioned as I have never used the splice integration or the looper. Only concern I’ve had is using external midi controllers where mapping disappears after shut down. I think you are right about the plug ins. Choose the ones that are really useful to you and ditch the rest. I have OPX-4. It’s great for sound design as extremely powerful for a 4 operator fm synth due to unusual wave types and extensive mod matrix. Fabric is ok, but not as good as the hardware synths I have,but don’t underestimate the other free plug ins. As you mention Hybrid is surprisingly powerful as is Tubesynth. After 2 years I am more than happy with the MPC one and it remains my central piece of hardware for track/album creation with only mastering only completed on a computer.

    The mpc one is the best sampler in history, for its price. There is NO machine on earth at that price point that can do everything the one can. Especially if you have a budget. You can record mix and master an entire album on it, with or without touching a computer. Sound wise, due to all of its lofi and degrading systems it does have, i can replicate nearly anything to a more than servicible outcome.
    Any negative you have, its got 100 positives. The only legit complaint is its lack of outputs. Future proof? It already is future proof in its current state. It needs nothing. I hear ram complaints, they are invalid, the only valid argument for it not having enough ram is for a live performer. That i can understand. But ive got MASSIVE projects and programs and ive never come close. If a beat maker is running out of ram, i think the issue is the beat maker thinking they need 1000000000 things going on. We all know ALL of the best songs of all time, are quite simple when broken down.
    The one other legit complain i personally have, which is subjective. ... is its reliance on touch screen. I chose the one over the live 2 simply due to its shape (i am Anti rectangle) and its many more dedicated buttons. If the touch screen ever fails, well we are fucked. We can do alot without the touch, but theres many things it cant do. I think this is one of the only legit worries to have. I will probably buy the Mpc one + simple to have as a back up for the future just incase. I may invest in some broken ones on ebay for parts.

    Owned both the the live 2 and MPC One and found the One to be the best workflow out of the two.
    Sorry to say the MPC range died when the Keys 61 was released. 2.10 was the last pure MPC OS in my opinion.
    The MPC One was the closest I’ve been to just making music and forgetting about the hardware and software. I could switch this thing on and just go. But, sadly the updates kept coming and slowly but surely my frustrations superseded its workflow. Scales in pad perform was the big one for me. They just broke it and when they did fix it it was clunky.
    Plus those plug in prices 😮 what were they thinking!! Nobody expected them to be free and I’m all up for supporting Akai but it felt like a cheap cash grab.
    The hardware limitations are also apparent since 2.11. Loading bars and glitchy/crashes was the new norm.
    Although I did enjoy using controller mode and my vsts. I think controller mode is often overlooked. It’s one of its biggest strengths. The idea of plugging in a laptop and having the power of vsts is pretty impressive. Plus you don’t need to even look at the laptop screen just use its processor.
    In the end I sold my MPC’s and moved on to ableton and push 2. It just works. I now have a laptop with Ableton and a MK3 Launchpad for mobile production.
    I’ll keep an eye on Akai but I’ll wait for a MPC One v2 and a more stable OS before returning.

I'm trying to achieve a balance between sample mangling and a instrumental performance. I play keys so I sample myself, I don't really like using other peoples' samples. If the MPC One could make glitchy/generative stuff I think it would be an easy choice haha.

    Having worked in IT development for decades I see the MPC software as a typical example of poor architecture. If firmware updates are frequent and contain mostly bug fixes, that is a clear sign that the underlying architecture and the quality of the coding is poor. That’s what we have with the MPC OS. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, it just means it will never really be stable. Akai isn’t the only company with such problems, but is a textbook example .
    Another sign of poor architecture is the clunky workflow and UX on the MPC. That is the result of adding features too frequently without an overall consistent design concept. Such an approach to engineering creates systemic instabilities.
    The fact that MPC still doesn’t have a real song arrangement functionality is probably because the fundamental sequence/track architecture is outdated and leaves Akai in a dead end. Because of the lack of a sound engineering concept, It is now simply too costly and difficult to dig itself out of that dead end so energy is spent on plug ins to generate revenue.
    Perhaps, akai has found a way out of through the akai force, which has the same power as the MPC but without the archaic single loop centric sequence architecture? For music production that goes beyond a single loop with some track mutes, the MPC is a dead end though…

  • @sugarhigh4242
    @sugarhigh4242 ปีที่แล้ว

    One area Akai could (I think easily?) improve on the MPC is mapping external midi inputs. I can't find a way to map Looper or Sampler controls to a foot switch for example. Audio inputs only offer mixer targets like volume and pan (rather than Rec arm for example), and no global controls when you should be able to map midi directly to MPC controls (e.x. adding buttons missing on the Live that are available on One and Live 2). Recording multiple midi tracks at once is a good super power of the MPC and improving midi maps would make that power more accessible.

    The MPC One has been on my list for a long time as an all in one with sampler. I've been seeing if I can get by in DAWs (currently Bitwig - no lazy chopping and other software sampler annoyances) but I'm really still feeling the urge for a hardware sampler. And at this price point (and hey it's an Akai after all), it does still look desirable. I just worry about making full tracks with it, due to the workflow and then end up hopping back to the DAW.

    I don't use the Audio tracks because I like to jam and the sampler keeps on going while the sequence loops.
