HobbyZone Duet 523mm RTF - Part 2: Maiden Flight and First Crash

  • I am always on the lookout for "RC Gems" (I also lovingly call them "buds"). These are RC aircraft that are inexpensive and of high quality, yet great flyers as well right out of the box. Especially if these gems are suitable for newbies and for people considering to try out this hobby, my excitement quadruples.
Here, I think I found a 3-channel gem that is also beginner-friendly. I ordered this HobbyZone Duet RTF (ready-to-fly) airplane from Tower Hobbies during their "RC Madness Flash Sale" (March 26-27, 2021). It was 25% off, so it came down from $69.99 to $52.49. I got free shipping by combining order with my RC friend Raj and getting above Tower Hobbies' $99 "free shipping" threshold. With the tax, the Duet cost me $55.77, an excellent deal for a brand-new, high-quality, name brand, 3-channel RTF airplane:

It really came with everything you need to fly it! You just charge the battery by plugging it in the charging slot on the transmitter, and about 45 minutes later you are ready to fly, no assembly, no nothing. So complete yet so simple! Horizon Hobby quality shows.
In the first episode, I did the unboxing and shared my initial observations, which were positive:

In this second episode, I am performing its maiden flight in about 6-7 mph wind. Unfortunately, my initial expectations were not met during this first flight. I am planning to fly it again on a totally calm day in order to get a better feeling of its flight characteristics, because this airplane is not designed to fly in even low winds.
Thank you very much for watching. If you liked this video, please give it a thumbs-up. Great video - as are all of your videos. The Duet is my first plane. I'm happy that I can fly it rather well, but like you, the nose broke off. Some glue fixed is, but for such a small light plane I didn't think something like that would happen. I'll keep flying it to get better with my flying skills. I'm thinking of the small Sport Cub S for my next plane. Thanks for your informative videos.

I think it flies good. You keep saying it doesn’t turn right well I think it was doing fine. Don’t get mad at me but I think I wouldn’t talk so much and just fly. You worry too much about it’s performance. I have one just like it and it flies good. I don’t judge it’s performance it is what it is and it’s a great plane ! 😊

A bit disappointing, especially for a Horizon plane.

Hi Alex. Yes, unfortunately it is. I had such high hopes during its unboxing. 😕
