Sure you need 4 to survive, but there are a bunch of draws in your deck that do that. Any black source, an asmo, another cookbook, or even another roots. You had a ton of looks at stabilizing

Insidious roots is one of my favorite cards in recent memory. It feels good without being overpowered, and inspires a lot of fun deck design. The Asmo roots package is always a joy to see, especially when it pops off
I really liked the inclusion of TortEx in the asmo roots deck. It gives a lot of extra utility to the extra copies of Ovalchase, and makes the roots even better. I kinda think it should be more than a 1 of.
I think the easiest combo you can do in Legacy with Tortured Existence is Anger and Insidious Roots, let's you make infinite plants so long as you have a creature in hand and graveyard.
@BoshNRoll Yeah, the problem with all the other combos is they require resolving a 4 or 5 drop. I can also imagine some sort of weird toolbox reanimator deck where the Tortured Existence is both a discard outlet as well as a way to grab any silver bullet creature you need when paired with Entomb. Main issue there is just adding more graveyard reliance to your graveyard deck. xD

I feel like entomb has a home here with more tortured existence. it lets you be more toolboxy. is functional additional copies of daredevil. finds a loam if you need to urza's saga your way through a game.
I find myself wondering if the graveyard hate could be something with a one-at-a-time mode like Relic of Progenitus; in theory this lets you eat your own graveyard for roots in a tough spot in addition to the card's hate duties, but I'm not sure how much worse the best of those options is than nihil. EDIT: Of course! With Ghost Vacuum, the roots help generate the mana you need to crack it! This is a flawless plan with no flaws.
Stonecoil Serpent can infinitely block a Frog and is an artifact to trigger Ovalchase to return to hand if you use Tortured Existence to discard the Ovalchase to get the Serpent back from Graveyard. It even serves as a mana dump for late game or if you manage to combo off with Roots. Similarly Hangarback Walker or Walking Balista are also both scaleable artifact threats that can benefit from the "Tortured Daredevil" combo. And shoutouts to Orinthopter for just being a FREE flying blocker (I think the other options are likely better, but who doesn't love free spells?).
Yeah Roots! Insidious Roots is one of the most fun cards they’ve printed in a while and I’ve wanted to see it in Legacy for a while. I feel like it fits better in Dredge than anything else

I was wondering if at the end of your first match, when you were rooting for a topdeck creature, in that spot couldn't you replace any draw for daredevil with the cookbook? It didn't matter in that spot because you had tons of mana (and power)
Between asmo, ovalchase and Tor-ex: If asmo gets removed you can tor-ex the Asmo and if you can cast it the book will bring back the ovalchase after cast OR can be discarded. The only risk is a counter spell you don't have to wait for extra cards and be hellbent and still recur asmo to keep up food-removal.
Love to see that video. I also tried tortex + roots and thought it'd be a sick combo. Sadly, there's pretty much no good targets for tortex. I played tortex in pauper and thought it'd be a pauper problem, but nope. It's a tortex problem.
I hate to say this, but deck does work better with Frog. The extra discard outlet is bawler. Just missed a top 8 at a Modern RCQ with a Sultai brew like this one.
Phyrexian revoker could be a good frog shut down that u could keep recurring also fleshbag is ok. Hexmage and aborial grazer also seem like ok low drops to bring back. I also keep thinking will o wisp could be ok against frog 2😂lol.

100%. With 4 sagas in the deck and a bunch of color intensive cards, you wouldn't be able to play any basic lands. The two best decks in the format run wasteland. Baleful strix isn't even that good in today's metagame.

Two Vengful Pharaoh would counter Merc Tide and Pyschic Frog nicely with all your self discard, mill and life gain.
