Another special thank you to Metabolic Mind and Baszucki Group for all of the work they are doing to bring healing to as many people as possible, and for supporting me through this exploration and journey. My life has completely changed, and thank you doesn't feel enough.
Follow @MetabolicMind (and more at www.metabolicmind.org/) to learn more about this new approach to psychiatry and to connect with and learn more from incredible researchers, clinicians, and lived experience advocates, all working toward understanding how to actually improve quality of life through metabolic health.
An immense thank you to Nicole Laurent (mentalhealthketo.com/) for her knowledge and guidance in helping me most effectively improve my quality of life through this intervention. You were integral and I'm so grateful for your support.
Thank you so much to everyone who has followed along on this journey over the last year. This has not been an easy paradigm shift, and I appreciate the meaningful dialogue, and openness to reframing what is possible in recovery of mental illness.

You're "coming off of medication" journey is very inspirational. Even though there are people that are against it and don't believe it could be possible, we as humans are still very misinformed on a lot of information on life in general. So many people cling to information that cannot be proven 100% unless you are all knowing. And for so long Doctors have said there is no cure for schizophrenia. That just never sat right with me. All of existence is too big to think that they're will never be a cure for something. This video brings about new understanding of what could be possible to everyone. Thank you 🙏🏾 for not only documenting your experience but putting it out there into the world to show that there is hope for us. 🙌🏾

I’ve been med free for 8 years now, and although each day brings ongoing dedication and commitment to this lifestyle, what I’ve regained is incredible. Are people looking forward to medication withdrawal and dealing with all the brain injury being unmasked? I don’t think so. Most people avoid the withdrawal and keep taking the stuff. The ones that don’t want to take it are probably having adverse reactions and should stop it anyway and try keto or carnivore.

You’re stable, your disorder isn’t gone and your message scares me on many levels. If you go off keto, will symptoms come back? If yes, then you’re stable and in remission, so amazing. I have a Thyroid disorder. I take meds and I’m stable, but I still have a thyroid disorder. - My son has SA and is stable on meds; no psychiatric symptoms, thank goodness. Keto is an option for those who can organize their food and ADLs. However, like an alchoholic in recovery, SA is still there, even when in remission.

If I had to choose between what I'm having for lunch or whether to live with the side affects of lifelong medication, it's pretty much a no brainer, especially if the side affects of diet change is other areas of improved health as well.

While the research is still ongoing, it seems clear that there are people where metabolic therapies can be tapered and a patient can be in complete remission without medication, there are people who need to continue metabolic therapy in order to manage symptoms and stay in remission, and there are people who need both medication and metabolic therapy in order to manage. Like everything, it is dependant on what is best for each person. While it isn't a cure all for everyone, this research, and what Lauren is doing to promote it, will be the future of mental health treatment with the ability to bring hope back to millions who have felt lost.

I am happy for you but also concerned. Metabolic therapy is new and uncharted territory. So much goes in to a clinical study, one of the most important thing is to have a statistician who calculate how many patients one need to prove something, the study need to be design in a way that makes it possible to be replicated by others and get the exact same results. The rules and regulations surrounding this is very very very strict and when those are not followed, people's life and safety are at risk. Countless people have died or gotten hurt because some arrogant doctor skips a few steps because everything "seems fine" or "should work". In addition, people trust in science is harmed, as if we are the enemy for not doing things that seems so easy. the reason we don't take the easy way is because people can die. I love that you are "healed" and that you encourage others who are not helped by medicine, i am considering trying myself. However promoting something like this in this way is risking the safety of the people you inspire. Psychiatry is known for medicine with side facts and reluctance to take them. Countless people have felt that they don't think they need it anymore, stop taking it an then crashes. Please remember that horrible things can happen when you make psychiatry the "enemy" or an "obsticle" and people lose trust in evidence and medication.

@Susanne-qp8vj what exactly are you trying (and failing) to say? Link the study, give me your crexentials and explain why you want to downplay something as serious as anorexia. I grew up with a young woman I was rather fond of who had anorexia and died of a heart attack in her early 20s. Lauren has so many issues on or off meds that even if she was cured of all symptoms it would mean very little because she doesn't have just schizophrenia. And if you are so bold as to quote a study I doubt you have read, please answer the second part of the question.

I'm very happy for you, Lauren! This is very helpful.
Around the middle to end of the last century, antipsychotic medication revolutionized the treatment of mental disorders, replacing interventions like lobotomy. Similarly, metabolic interventions like the ketogenic diet could be the beginning of a new revolution in how we treat and understand mental disorders like unipolar depression and the schizo-bipolar spectrum.
I notice denial in comments, but skepticism implies hope and openness. If preliminary evidence suggests positive responses to treating mental illnesses, and there's strong evidence that the ketogenic diet can treat epilepsy (a neurological disorder), it's not enough to confirm its efficacy in treating neuropsychiatric disorders, but it's enough to give us reasonable hope.
Who knows? Maybe in ten years, this approach will become the first-line treatment for schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar disorder. Or perhaps it will become a valuable complementary therapy, widely recommended within the next five years.
I've been following this channel for years because there are a few people in my family who have schizophrenia and/or bipolar disorder. It's impossible to deny the veracity of Lauren's experience.

the public was sold the medical model & the DSM and then told it's about taking pills but there are clearly cases where an actual medical diagnosis can be considered or confirmed and cured or managed. as well as non-pill interventions that deal with understanding and integrating altered states of consciousness. and also the considerations of treatments like a diet. We need more confirmation of what happened to this person but it will take massive pressure to deal with the epistemic hubris of biopsychiatry.

For every person in the medical field that sees these videos and looks into the profoundly successful research coming out around physical and mental (but i repeat myself) health, there are countless patients that will be able to learn about this from their medical provider. With the position that Calley Means has worked into, I see a very bright future for the promotion of this research especially out of places like Stanford, Harvard, and Johns Hopkins that are already leading this movement. Lauren, I'm deeply happy for you and your entire family with this new capacity and the direction of your advocacy work. I managed bipolar II disorder for many years without medication building capacity through other ways that allowed me to accomplish a lot.
I'd been a financial provider for a couple of years and my sole caregiver for many more so I picked up a lot of skills and expanded my capacity even while battling debilitating symptoms. Hence, medical interventions were complimentary to recovery not the cornerstone per se.
Four years ago, a tougher hypomanic episode prompted me to see a psychiatrist and I found your channel to gauge medication experiences and shape my self advocacy in doctors' appointments. The goal was remission and best case scenario resuming a life without medications with even more capacity. I achieved that this year, not with a keto diet but a number of routine (exercise, health accountability partner) and environmental changes (live alone, no contact from triggering persons) that have allowed me to accomplish some of my biggest goals yet.
I've been studying my body, symptoms and reactions to multiple stimuli for years so I've made a lot of informed decisions which may not be the case for everyone. I think the biggest lesson from your journey is to be brave enough to find what works for us as individuals so that we as patients can drive forward research in this area. Thank you so much for your service.

It's not like you were encouraging people to stop their meds cold turkey with no medical support. I have to say, I did not expect to see results this good, or for the results to last as long as they have. This is really impressive and encouraging. I hope it can lead to more studies and funding, so that more doctors can become knowledgeable on this and prescribe it to patients. If it's a viable treatment, people should have access to it. I don't know if you could speak before the legislature in Alberta or maybe to the Commons but I feel like getting your story to government people who make decisions about healthcare funding is important.

Yes more studies and funding would be great. Right now the majority of ongoing studies are being funded by one philanthropic family which I'm very sure the scientific community is grateful for, but they can only do so much. Wouldn't it be great though if the government would fund some research? Unfortunately, pharmaceutical companies, who are the majority funders of the Food and Drug Administration (similarly in Europe and other western countries) have no interest in funding studies where the positive results would lead to major losses in revenue.

Pointing out something a public person is doing as irresponsible and inaccurate (e.g. saying she has schoziphrenia when she has sa bipolar type or saying healed when it is managed by rigorous medical diet and it only has been for a short time and even shorter time without meds) is not being "negative" or "jealous". I am not affected by any psychotic illness, yet I am still very concerned about how she is going about this, despite having gotten so much constructive feedback on her approach. What would be wrong with titles like "the year i managed my schizoaffective disorder symptoms with medical keto" or "the year I switched from psych meds to medical keto for my schizoaffective disorder"? Why would anyone make any claims on healing schizophrenia (which she doesn even have), instead of just taking their viewers along their personal journey so that the viewers are not misled about a cure being possible, discovered and applicable to anyone? Also, a lot of long term viewers have the feeling she is getting payed to promote keto which makes her other choices on how to incorrectly label her remission/ management of symptoms through diet as a cure and conflating schizophrenia with schizoaffective, even harder to stomach. I wish her all the best, at the same time I do not agree at all with her public approach.

(a combo of a mood disorder and schizophrenia). if you trust the medical literature so much why dont you say she had schizophrenia as the DSM clearly highlights schizoaffective people as having schizophrenia. are you saying someone with bipolar and schizophrenia is not someone with schizophrenia but someone with anxiety and schizophrenia is someone with schizophrenia?

Is using the term “healed” in this context not on some level similar to saying you are “healed” from a food allergy when you avoid that food? I am incredibly happy for you and the relief you are experiencing although with such a large audience I am concerned with the way you’ve worded the title. I truly hope that you will not dismiss concerned viewers comments as “hate”.

    • @leoj2095
      @leoj2095 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

I think that's a valid but unnecessary objection. If you watch the documentary, there's no doubt about her use of the “healing” concept. Healing a condition implies that someone is free of symptoms because the problem has been solved, and in her case, the problem was metabolic dysfunction that affected her brain function. Her metabolic dysfunction went away, and her brain function improved, so technically, she did heal the condition.
Even if she needs to eat in a specific way to avoid metabolic dysfunction, she can still use the term “heal”. We all need to eat in a specific way to prevent or reverse things like risk of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes, and that doesn't mean we're all ill. If you need to eat in a more specific way to prevent things like schizophrenia symptoms, you're not ill, you're just more vulnerable.
The issue may arise when, based solely on the title and without viewing the documentary, someone infers that she claims schizophrenia can be cured without ongoing specific care. However, it only takes minimal discernment to understand that Lauren's message does not convey that notion.

    • @jiriwiesner

Yes, you absolutely have a point. But the diet one considers as normal matters in this context. In my case, I have been on a low carb diet (I shouldn't call it keto but it's not far from it) for more than 6 years. I am still not convinced a high carb diet is a good choice for me and it never was. So, for me, low carb/keto/carnivore is normal. High carb is weird and possibly dangerous. I would go back to a "balanced high carb diet" only if I really had to (scarcity of food, etc.).

If schizophrenia or bipolar disorder is viewed as a condition that arises when unfavorable genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors-such as trauma and chronic stress-converge, it should be possible for the disorder to no longer manifest if epigenetic and environmental factors develop favorably.
In preclinical studies, it has been demonstrated that ketogenic diets and stress-reducing measures can reverse epigenetic changes and stimulates mitophagy to recycle dysfunctional mitochondria.. This suggests that, after a certain duration of therapy, only the genetic vulnerability might remain. Ultimately, even the reintroduction of a balanced, whole-food diet - for example, a Mediterranean diet - might not necessarily lead to a relapse.
I am confident that we will see positive surprises here as well. And if that is the case, it will be absolutely correct to use the term 'healing'.
Regarding the cyclical nature of bipolar disorder, there are interesting new hypotheses about why the condition manifests in this way. I recommend the paper published in Nature Magazine, "The Metabolic Overdrive Hypothesis" by Campbell et al. It is available online and offers a completely new perspective on bipolar disorder, particularly mania, which manifests as an energy surplus and is accompanied by psychotic symptoms.

Mental health professional here. You also eat a certain diet. Keto is the default way of eating evolutionary.
Psychologists should be open that it is likely they will have to make a shift. Prioritizing the microbiome and mitochondria first, after that there is a place for psychologists. This is not good for my job, but people are more important. For now they should at least tell clients that these possibilities exist.
A good prebiotic mix with: PHGG 6g, patatostarch 10g, pectin 8g, psyllium 5g, ricebran 8g should also be tried. Big amounts , double amounts in first month, take with every meal to knock out the dysbiosis. 74g totaal for first month and all in good balance. Dont try probiotics or fermentation. Al individual ingredients have research too back it up. The mix doesnt have the highest science yet to back it up. But people need options right now.

We actually don't know that. Dr. Chris Palmer has indicated that after years of a medical ketogenic diet, some individuals can return to a modified version (such as a paleo diet) with no ill effects. So it may in-fact be 'healing' rather than just purely remission. However, this is TBD, and I don't think Lauren plans to do this soon.

Our young aduly child started the same approach you've been doing, around the same time. First several months were outstanding, but then THC was resumed (perhaps due to immature risk assessment). It seems to have been ongoing for the past several months, and while positive symptoms are not happening, negative symptoms abound. Still much better than if not well into ketosis, but it shows how challenging it can still be without stopping that. At least you have shown what can be done!

I think the problem is the words you are using. "Healed" schizophrenia implies that it is gone. From what we know about schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder they are chorionic relapsing/remitting disorders. You may be in a period of remitting, but relapse will likely happen. I hope for you that this is not the case and that your keto intervention has actually "healed" you but I am skeptical. My bipolar disorder relapsed while l am on keto, and has now remitted again after a year-,long depressive episode. I have been on medical keto the whole time.

@@stigmacrusher I have been on a low carb diet for 6 years. I think I spend most of my day in ketosis (no measurements). In the past 2 years, I started experiencing anxiety and depression. 4 weeks of carnivore did not help. Going on a high fat keto seemed to help a bit but did not resolve it and I did not persevere. What helped was mindfulness. I have my own method how to reach the mindful state of mind. I focus and force my brain to process sensory inputs (visual inputs generate a lot of activity). I think the descriptions how to achieve mindfulness are for relatively healthy people and not for people who's brains don't work because they are depressed. It is a guess but I think if I was on a high carb diet I would not be able to practise mindfulness at all. I know bipolar is much more than just depression but it is the only way I can relate.

I just want to add that : I think people might feel triggered because when you say you’ve healed your schizophrenia with keto, it can come across as implying that having schizophrenia is something that needs to be "fixed" or "cured," rather than something we learn to live with and manage. For many of us, this framing can feel offensive because it reinforces the idea that we’re inherently broken or less than, rather than accepting that mental illnesses are part of who we are.
We’re constantly battling societal stigma-being labeled as crazy, whacko, or abnormal-and statements like this, even if unintentionally, can feed into that harmful narrative. It suggests that unless we "heal" from our condition, we’re not doing enough or we’re somehow failing. This can be especially hurtful for those of us who are doing our best with medication, therapy, or other treatments but still struggle with symptoms. It’s important to recognize that managing schizophrenia is already a huge accomplishment, and the idea of "healing" can put unfair pressure on people who are just trying to get through each day.
But regardless of how you might come across as "ableist" personally i feel that it's unhealthy to pretend like mental illness or disabilities are something to aspire to have and should be inspirational.. I don't want to accept I have schizophrenia, I don't want to accept I have an incurable illness. If that makes me an ableist so be it... I hate this illness, and don't want it. We shouldn't be ashamed to say that, but yeah it can come across as rude LOL.

Her first videos with her smiling from ear to ear, the poster child. I heard she stole the info from a schizophrenia awareness group and they won't have anything to do with her. She also quit the group when she wasn't elected to the board of directors.
This channel is not realistic in relation to the very real struggles.
It is insulting to peers. Her status, pretentious attitude and her "it's all about me" presentation...she is not "the voice" for mental health illness. Though she desperately tries to be.
I can't stand to watch more than a few minutes of her presentations and I have to turn it off.

I would be very interested in knowing precisely how your medical keto diet is different from the standard keto diet. That specific information seems to be one of the most closely guarded secrets in the world!
What are some of the things you really have for your everyday dinners, for example. What recipes have you come up with for yourself when it comes to reality in your diet. What has worked the best for you when it comes to your meals on medical keto. You know, day to day reality on medical keto.
Many of us would probably be very interested in that.

I don’t comment this to be snarky. I don’t believe it’s curable. Maybe it can go into remission but it’s always an underlying illness. Just know many of us want to get off medication but absolutely cannot. This type of content encourages some people to try that absolutely need the medication. And they may lose everything in their life due to their downward spiral. I’ve done the ketogenic diet like you and while it made my symptoms less it didn’t eradicate them. This channel is dangerous for those suffering with schizophrenia the majority won’t have the same experience as you. I’ve also believed I was healed and it was a delusion. Sure all those things can lessen symptoms and that’s great to teach. But you’re only hurting your community telling them that they can be healed. I support your decision to go off of antipsychotics fully. They are overprescribed! I had a severe, treatment-resistant psychotic break in 2012. I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder during hospitalization to treat the psychosis. I did not agree with the diagnosis and in 2014 I went off of all antipsychotic medication. I have been free of psychosis for over 12 years off of nearly all psychiatric medication. What my therapist and I think had in 2012 was a PTSD-related psychosis. Image what would have happened if I had listened to all the fear-mongering psychiatrists in 2014 who told me that I would never be able to exist without antipsychotics. In many ways, I have achieved my highest level of overall successful functioning post-antipsychotics. I have learned to meditate, exercise, sleep with stability, care for my needs, eat well, and process my life trauma because of the healing relationship I have built with my therapist. No medication could ever offer than kind of love and support.
