Personally, I connected to Tai Lung from the point of view as a "gifted student" (for me, it's academics, not kung fu). A lot of students designated as gifted end up failing later in their schooling because they never learn to study or handle failure. I sympathize with Tai Lung's response to his "first failure", that being denied the Dragon scroll, because I melted down after my first experience with academic failure.
He smiles when he's finished escaping and sends the Duck to let Shifu know he's on his way, and he smiles while talking to Tigress on the bridge and as he knocks the Five unconscious. He also has a few moments at the end of the film when he asks if Po ran away, when he gets the scroll, and when Po tells him that Shifu didn't teach him the fingerhold technique. He does smile several times though-out the film, namely whenever he has the upper hand, because he is confident in his abilities.
Exactly. While it’s never confirmed the backstory of Kai heavily implies that Oogway wasn’t as good of a person as he was now. Kinda understandable that Kai would feel betrayed

@@zeddicuss Could have been so cool too. Imagine if she spent her time copying all of their techniques, their overall strategies, appearance, etc. but didn't actually need to incapacitate them. She was a super fan, not a thief like Kai. Picture it. Po can't beat her by himself because she can mirror literally all of his abilities, and the five are otherwise occupied. Instead of a traitor turned ally being a new character, Po asks for help first from Oogway, who says no since he is supposed to be dead, but while he's there he sees the other villains too. We get some catharsis from Kai and Shen, but Tai Lung volunteers to help in exchange for coming back to life. As someone who was in jail during the Chameleons preparations, she never had a chance to copy him, so together they are able to win, with Tai Lung learning the lesson Oogway always had and returning to the afterlife willingly. There, he dismisses Oogway, who tries to complement on the progress, but out of self assurance instead of spite.
It doesn't even makes sense for the chameleon to be rejected, her reasons as to why they rejected teaching her was because she was small and has a frail body, WE GOT MASTER CHICKEN, MANTIS, VIPER, Hell if I didn't know any better MASTER EARTHWORM.
Honestly something I find pretty upsetting personally is that they could have turned this 'plot hole' into an actual part of the story. It would be so simple to say that 'the Chameleon was turned away from all these other places because THEY thought she was too small, even though there are other places in the world that are willing to train smaller animals', and have her discover, through Mantis, that she doesn't NEED to be big to learn how to fight. Of course, that kinda falls apart when I take into account the fact that the Chameleon can literally just turn into anyone, and she doesn't even need to 'steal their Kung-Fu' or whatever to do so. That could ALSO have been a plot point, even just making her insecure about herself, and hate that she has to turn into other, larger animals to be taken seriously, could have made her significantly more interesting. It could be a nice parallel to Po in the first movie, who was ridiculed for being a panda. I love the idea of a character who has an ability that they hate using, not because of any physical drawback but simply because they don't think it suits them. Thinking about this makes me depressed, lol.
This, or have It be a cover that's later explained by a master that rejected her as she avenges her self, a cover for the rejection being they feared her affinity for witchcraft, her shape-shifting or hated her family for something they did in the past that she was not aware of, honestly weird no one pointed out we had never seen a Chameleon up to this point. What's up with that?

ngl, those kung fu master destrying everyone is top tier. Tai has to be one of the best prison escapes to ever exist. Any others? Meh, it's just ppl trying to escape in the most dumb dramatic way possible. Tai Lung? The man was such meance they had to have 1000 guards, deep in the mountains, chained up AND acupoint restraints, AND hypothetically impossible deep dungeon level to escape with only one way out and in. I'll watch that any day.
Imagine the chameleon bringing back all the villains, only for Lord Shen to overshadow her and using his cunning to convince the other baddies to become their leader, styling on the chameleon, finishing her off and proceeding to do some unfinished business in an ultimate three-on-one twist confrontation!
I've seen a similar idea on one of the videos by Horror TH-camr "VibingLeaf" where it's a Kung Fu Panda Analog Horror where it has the evil spirit of Lord Shen haunt the dreams of Po, and give him horrid nightmares every night where it has him in pure pain. If they were gonna bring back Shen, they should've done THAT. Not only is it a cold way to bring back a villain but it also stays true to the dark demeanor of the movie Shen debated in.

I’m amazed by the idea of someone ranking Kai lower then The Chamaeleon. Kai betrayed Oogway, smashed the Jade Palace and managed to scare Shifu and the Furious 5. Plus his presentation was legendary. So legendary that The Chamaeleon was basically a direct rip off. Kai is genuinely my favorite out of the 4 villains because he blends Tai Lung’s comedic side with the stage presence of Lord Shen. Plus he was far more of a challenge for Po then Tai Lung. The Chamaeleon is literally a disgrace to the franchise while Kai made the third movie in terms of threat color scheme and fear factor. Kai’s signature was green and that was ripped off and done significantly worse with 4. The shape shifting was far too similar of a concept of chi stealing. The metal and big city idea was ripped straight from 2. Not to mention the final battle is pathetic. The Chamaeleon goes down with the pathetic amount of effort and when the fox girl ends up taking her out with basically no Kung Fu training whatsoever it made me wanna throw up in my mouth.
It's Oogway who betrayed Kai. Both were ambitious warlords, they took and destroyed whatever they wanted, but the near death experience of Oogway ahowed how fopliah that crusade of them were. One day they would die and be forgotten, everything they worked for would be destroyed. Both saw chi as the answer to that, Oogway would useit as a way to build a legacy, something to be taught even after he passed aeay, Kai on the other hand sae it as a way to make himself immortal amd to lift himself above all other. One was compassionate and generous, the other was selfish and greedy

Kai’s backstory also reveals a lot of new lore about Oogway as a character, and how the older days of Kung Fu Panda series. Not to mention his Chi ability really pushes the stakes of what the characters are capable of
Yes I agree. A lot of people don't like his personality but I really enjoy it. I like that he's less serious than the others. The really serious and dark stuff was dealt with in the second movie so the third movie being lighter makes sense. His slightly more jokey personality works too, given how he was friends with Oogway of all people lol.
At least he has a fanbase of people that like him. Even if some people don’t think he’s the best villain he’s still got many good qualities. Can’t say the same about the Chameleon. She feels like a rip off of Kai, and Shen to a smaller extent

There is another reason why Kai wanted the power, Oogway had all but ereased his memory and by the time of 3, no one remembers who he was. He wanted to destroy everything Oogway had created as repayment to make him just him, forgotten.
Yeah I really like that motive because it plays into Kai’s whole powers, and his design. The green color of his does a great job of showing his lust, and envy
The Chameleon having little to no backstory was just lazy. They could've done so much better than "I was too short." Like tie her to the first film, tie her to Tai Lung and explain how he was left as a child to Shifu: It could be shown that the Chameleon was the leader of a growing criminal organization, a mafia group, and Tai Lung's parents had wronged her and now being pursued by her goons. To protect their child, they left Tai at the Jade Palace and ran, eventually getting caught by the Chameleon and killed. It would answer who were Tai Lung's parents, why was he abandoned, and give the Chameleon some kind of connection to the past films. Perhaps she would even try to thank Po for ending Tai to settle the problems dealt to her by his parents. I don't know, but anything would be better than "I was too short to be taught kung fu."
Actually in the original script, they wanted ALL the new characters to have no backstory, but some people spoke up on how fucking stupid that is and they added some dialogue to have some modicum of backstory
That's a pretty neat idea (infinitely better than the movie) but I think I prefer the implication Tai Lung's parents just didn't want him. Not everyone abandons their child because they want to protect them. Some people just don't want the kid. Of course, this is a fact that might be too terrifying for child viewers so I'd be wary of showing that in a kid movie but the implication worked fine. It further explains Tai Lung's desperation to please Shifu for fear of abandonment. On the other hand, though, even if Tai's parents loved him he couldn't know the real reasons, so his reaction would still be the same. And one advantage would be the possibility of resolving or diminishing his childhood trauma. As I said, it's not a bad idea. It would just feel too much like Po's story to me.
Y'know Trilogies aren't such a bad thing. Lord of The Rings, Spy Kids, Indiana Jones, Star Wars (original and prequels), etc... It's fine to make sequels for your movie, but it's gotta end eventually

The chameleon is what happens when executives don't respect writers. Cus she plays out exactly like a end of season villain in a disposable children's cartoon. And when you don't respect the difference between making a product and making a quality product, and the costs and sacrifices it takes to achieve that, then you end up with cheap junk.
But that is kind of the point. Those guys learned the lesson, the cameleon didn't. Changing is good, but the only reason she is too comfortable changing is because she doesn't have a personality, she didn't created a style of her own, even her name is without a personality, it's simply the name of the animal

Kai does have a very interesting backstory. In the Flashback, it seems that Kai and Master Oogway were ambitious warriors. But Oogway was able to see kindness from the Pandas. But, Kai was not able to see their kindness. Then at the Jade palace, Shifu says he won't let him destroy Oogways memory. Then Kai said, "why, he destroyed mine?". Kai doesn't only have power, he also wants revenge. Oogway completely got rid of him from history (kind of). As seen when Kai returned to the Mortal Realm.
I think the director is the one to blame. I heard stories of all the crap that he was cooking. The co-directer had tons of good ideas that were tossed aside and ignored.
It’s not the writers fault the Chameleon wasn’t the best written. It’s the director’s fault. He kept forcing the writers to rewrite her character and constantly change the script to fit his own stupid idea of what the movie should be
Honestly I would have written Chameleon as the Cursed Child/ Cursed Chameleon because I will write how every chameleon is capable to only change the color to adapt their environment and to hide but only the Cursed Chameleon is capable of copying others and also capable of copying other Masters.
Kai also follows the theme of not letting go of the past that Kung Fu Panda Villains have. He was the warrior who kept fighting. When he an Oogway entered the Valley of the Panda's he didn't see Chi as the means for Peace and Healing like Oogway. He saw it as the Coup de Grace, the power to end all power. Even in death he kept going, accumulating his ultimate power and when he returned not only was he faced with one of the very people he took the Chi technique from, but Oogways successor no less. Kai is more poetic to the series as a whole. He's the villain Po inherited from Oogway.
I think one of the things that elevates the other villains is that when they fight people like the Furious Five, you see that they actually struggle against them, and it shows that beating these characters are act a feat and they aren’t just some people that get beaten up Also I love Tai Lung, but I will say that he definitely fell from grace at the end of the movie, he became a bumbling idiot for no reason he didn’t get blinded by rage or anything, he just suddenly became a dummy.
Something that I find funny is that the chameleon has a similar backstory to minkey, a character that's from Kao the kangroo 2022, but I honestly find Minkey more intimidating since using the eternal crystals he bassicly brainwashed the best teachers of fighting into transforming their dojo's into making a giant jayabomb factory (juice that would make you stronger) or a spa (esentially making them lazier). However this was with intent with becoming the world greatest warrior since he was denied being one wich made him the black sheep of the monkey community, also took control of someone that actually tried to defeat him and later made him fight his own son, Kao (the main character)
Maybe having no backstory, changing the physical appearance and having an unknown name could be indications for the unambiguous identity the chameleon has. Maybe the whole fourth movie focuses on the subject of identity and identity changing. (Spoiler alerts:) Po now becomes the spiritual leader, Zhen becomes the new Dragon Warrior, and the chameleon seemly "switches" between many physical identities and "steals" the identities of many Kung Fu Masters. Its such a shame that they didnt put more effort into the story. 1st movie: Challenges Po's physical strength 2 nd movie: Challenging Po's mental strength 3 rd movie: Challenging Po's spiritual strength The 4 th movie probably was supposed to challenge Po's whole identity, but the story unfortunally was bad written.
Id say kai moreso wanted revenge on oogway for his perceived betrayal, banishing him to the spirit world essentially made kai vanish from history- so he wanted to also erase any memorials for oogway too

Kai is a spirit being who can go toe to toe with Oogway, defeated Tai Lung in the spirit realm (you can see Tai Lung’s amulet on Kai’s belt, most notably when Kai takes Monkey’s and Viper’s Chi) defeated Shifu and nearly defeated Po, until Po’s friends helped him. That’s how unstoppable Kai is, that everyone who was defeated by him put up the best fight they could only to get defeated until Po stopped him for good. It is this unstoppable nature, being bad to the bone, having a good voice actor and a badass theme to top it off that makes Kai my favourite Kung Fu Panda villain. Tai Lung is a close second, followed by Lord Shen in third place. Unfortunately, the new villain in Kung Fu Panda 4 is last place in my book because she doesn’t live up to the 3 original Kung Fu Panda villains
My head canon is that she only met very arrogant Kung Fu masters who rejected her due to size and she thinks that must be what all Kung Fu masters are like. It’s still not a good enough motivation to be evil tho
The person who came up with the idea of the chameleon forgot to take her to the gym! Chameleon is literally a bootleg Kai that’s weaker and forgot to go the gym and didn’t even take very long for her to be powerful! Unlike Kai that spent 500 years in the spirit realm taking chi of every master! She is just too rushed!
The thing people overlook about Kai is he doesn’t want power just for the sake of having power. He wanted power to return to the mortal realm and destroy the legacy of Oogway, a brother he once fought side by side with and betrayed him. Kai wants revenge out of jealousy for Oogways success. While Oogway built an entire legacy and valley to call home. Kai was forgotten and no one has ever heard of him until he returned to the mortal realm. This is Kai’s motive for power in KFP 3. Nonetheless Shen is my favourite because he was a powerful threat not through his physique or his strength but his cunning and his intelligence. Xx
Kai was awesome even before The Chameleon. It is just that Kai was overshadowed by Tai Lung and Shen. Now Kai is welcome to sit at the Cool Kids Table because of the Chameleon.
@@leonarddurac9495we were definitely too harsh. Kai is still a good villain, he’s just not as compelling as Tai Lung or Shen. Kai has a very unwise fighting style, he has a great design, the green glowing eyes are unnatural and do a good job of presenting him as a threat, he knows not to make a badass entrance, he proved himself to be a threat in the beginning of the love by beating Oogway, his backstory sheds some light on the type of person Oogway used to be and implies why the Pandas have strayed away from their Chi abilities. He’s comedic but still a serious threat. Kai just needed his backstory to be a little more fleshed out and some more screen time cuz I genuinely enjoyed seeing him on screen
She could have been Kung Fu's enemy but they willfully as a studio fumbled her. Legit wasted potential, SHE WAS A WITCH AND A SHAPESHIFTER WITH AN ARMY! Movie despairingly needs a recut, no other ways to put It.

Honestly i dont know whats better in this video. The great takes and amazing walkthrough or the so accurate one liners. Also in Kai's defense he feelt betrayed by Oogway and jealousy of Oogway learning chi which made him want to take revenge. It was not just power, but still this is an amazing video!
My favorite kung fu panda villain is definitely Lord Shen. He's such an incredible villain. He sadistic, uncaring, cruel, and cunning, yet also has a backstory that explains that he was afraid of being destroyed by a warrior and also, Schaffrillas Production said that there was this sense of regret and chance of redemption. he could've easily killed the fortune teller, but he doesn't. Instead, he lets her go. Hearing how his parents loved him so much that banishing him killed them, which made it feel like after he was banished, they took their own lives. He's a perfect mix between emotional yet still evil and a menacing threat. I honestly believe both Lord Shen and Tai Lung are up there as some of DreamWorks' best villains alongside Death, Grimmel the Grisly, Pitch Black, and Big Jack Horner.
Kung Fu panda 4 is a serialized movie as in this is more tied to the series than the trilogy, similar to the new megamind movie that just looks like 2 episodes prolonged into a movie, if u throw it in the series u won't notice the difference and tv series as we all know uses way less resources that s why the new megamind movie looks so dull and blend and nothing like the OG movie that contained all the heart, sweat and tears of the creators. And this new panda movie is exactly the same quality (content wise) as empty and shallow as the megamind movie, just a cash grab
Kai’s main story ark was to erase the story and memory of oogway. He was stuck in oogways shadow for so long that no one except po knew who he was. His turn to evil was out of jealousy of oogway because everyone in china knew and adored the gentle and wise tortoise kung fu master.
Tai Lung didn’t want to be the dragon warrior, but Shifu gave him that idea? And Po was instead the new chosen dragon? Say, that certainly sounds very familiar to me. In Ninjago Sensei Wu’s first student was Morro who was poor and tight with money before he became Wu’s student. But then Morro eventually had a hunger once Sensei Wu told him he could be the green ninja. So naturally when he returned from the cursed realm he tried to destroy and curse Ninjago just because of his jealousy of Lloyd and determined that he wanted to be the green ninja no matter what. Yet, Tai Lung and Morro has kind of the same thing going on with them
I never noticed the color coding be4. It's actually really genius and shows each villains main vice. Tai lung is bitter and cold for shifu wasting his life with endless training, hence blue. Shen is enraged by his parents and his fate abandoning him, hence red. Kai is filled with envy and jealousy of oogway becoming a hero and a remembered legend, hence green. Really good video, made me think alot
The funniest part is originally Chameleon did not have any backstory and was only given one after a failed first screening. And yet still being "small" being a reason is dumb unless you somehow forget about Mantis being in the Furious 5.... Then again the movie forgot about the Furious 5 and also pretend the series are not cannon as the directors behind KFP4 say that TV experience is not good enough for film experience as anyone working on TV is inferior to them.

I don't know if it will make her a better villain? But what if perse, her village or home was under attack and she wanted to learn kung fu to defend it, but was rejected because she was "small" and was probably seen to be not capable in terms physical prowess, not one whom she seeked for help helped her till her home was destroyed. Her being the only one left and filled with thirst for revenge, she spent her time learning mystical arts such as magic. Now that she has gained power to prove herself, she reeks havok to those who who ignored her and seeks to dismantle kung-fu from their society and culture out of spite.
Kai would actually be the most important character because if Kai never helped oagway and found the panda village then oagway would never of found chi which would make it so there would be no dragon warrior
A lot of people giving Kai a bad time just because the previous 2 villain were so impeccable. Kai brings so much mythos and backstory to the world itself. Also because his character tied to oogway and old master, there is no direct connection to the current character because Oogway was dead so Kai seems a litle bit distant unlike Tai Lung or Lord Shen.
Its kinda a shame that the chameleon isnt a good written villain. I really adored her design so I had pretty high predictions on her whole character. I always kinda thought (before knowing the truth) that the Chameleon could have been Oogway's girl friend or stuff like that before Oogway discovered/created the Kung Fu. Maybe Oogway chooses his destiny (discovering Kung Fu, teaching Kung Fu, spreading wisdom, helping the new Dragon Warrior to fulfill his fate) over her what makes her feel betrayed. (Yeah, let her be also around 1000 years old, its pretty fitting for a sorceress.) Intimidated by her abilities as sorceress and witch, people started to fear what they dont understand and saw her as a sadistic dangerous threat what led her becoming more and more hatred by the folk. Her hatred against the folk also increases. And since she becomes a more and more sadistic sorceress Oogway also saw the growing "dark nature in her heart" (like he did in Tai Lung) what also have been a reason Oogway distanced more from her when he couldnt persuade her to overcome her hatred. She wanted to take revenge on the folk and rejected Oogway's peaceful intentions. She now has exactly become what the folk saw in her what led Oogway to leave her completely. She is so upset that she starts blaming everything that had to do with Oogway for her pain. Including Kung Fu and of course our Dragon Warrior. So stealing Kung Fu and destroying the Dragon Warrior is now her way to deal with her emotional pain and to take revenge on Oogway. Like, if this alternate story is better than what we got.
Just want to put a couple of reason of why Tai lung is my favorite Kung fu panda villain and top 5 in animated villains. 1. Tai lung was the only character in the franchise that needed extra bad stuff like saying he attacked the residence of the valley of peace to be less sympathetic. For those who don't know in the original Kung fu panda movie critics got to see Tai lung never attacked the Valley of peace and tried to strictly keep the battle between him and Shifu and no one else. This made movie critics love him more than Po and even some critics grew to hate Po for getting in the way thus the changes. 2. You touched on Tai lung design a bit but because you don't like him as much you couldn't really explain it and under sold his design hard. Tai lung design is so scary because he is a dark reflection of Tigress. We see the attitude shift in Tigress when Po is named dragon warrior and should could have easily gone down that path if not for the threat of Tai lung taking priority. And his design reflects this parallel perfectly. He's a dark big brooding figure with the color pallete of Grey, black and purple. Colors associated with darkness, confusion, and grief. His muscular frame with his huge glaring teeth perfectly work together with his yellow eyes and silent disposition that he perfectly triggers that primal instinct of seeing a predator. Compared to Tigress lighter color pallete of orange and red, two colors associated with warmth and security. She's small with a cute face, and while she is not talkative, she talks more than Tai lung, and her overall body language is inviting. Two polar opposites that was one day away from being one in the same. HONORABLE MENTION: gotta mention bros a badass in combat and has some of the smoothest fight scenes in animation history. 3. My most important reason I live Tai Lung is not just the backstory but the way the movie uses the backstory to grow and shape Tai Lung as the movie progresses. So many movies waste sympathetic villains by making them cartoonishly evil and hellbent on being evil no matter what. Tai Lung however? They use his backstory beautifully to show even throughout his rampage, he's still a good person who's been made to sit in his anger for too long. My favorite example of this is in the Shifu fight. The fact that throughout that fight he could have killed shifu at any time but yet constantly held himself back says everything. To anyone who says Tai Lung wasn't holding back watch the fight again. Tai Lung was destroying Shifu at every corner and all Shifu could do was defend yet the only time Shifu takes any real damage is when Tai Lung gets lost in his rage and straight up bodies Shifu no problem with his full power. It's even shown when Shifu says sorry there's that crack in his cold demeanor in which he realized how much he meant to Shifu and that maybe they could go back to how they were. But he's quickly swallowed by his anger of all that time he had wasted training for nothing, all that time he spent rotting in prison without so much as a visit from the man that loved him like a son when he was useful but discarded him as soon as he was worthless. That one moment perfectly reaffirms for us, the audience just why Tai Lung had gone evil all while truly letting the audience understand his pain. That's why Tai Lungs the GOAT.
I have noticed, a lot of the time, what makes good villains is their relation to the hero. Ti lung(I probably spelled it wrong) Was, as you said, an opposite of Po. An example of, in simplest terms, making the wrong decision. And Lord Shen, the entire reason for Po’s life without his mother and father, the attempted genocide of his kind. And Kai while having more of a connection towards Ogway, when after Po as a last stand towards removing Ogway’s legacy. The Chameleon had no connection at all. She had no real reason to be a villain, was not a victim, did not know of any overwhelming pride or ego.
You are right. Both Tai Lung and Lord Shen had moments where they soften and you can see the grief welling up in their eyes only to be suppressed once again. They had a mature complexity the Chameleon sorely lacked.
Remember the part where she merged the kung fu masters into that flying thing? That was not a wow that's so cool moment so much as wait she can do that?
the only change that I would do to Kai´s backstory would be to say he didn´t start taking other peoples chi for himself, but rather for another, imagine if Kai startet stealing chi to save Oogway form certain death and later on Oogway learns about the destruction Kai caused and decided to stop him
I've noticed something, the top kung-fu panda movies are shown with the furious five. 2 the five was in it alot and helping Po. 1 they mean to Po but still in it alot. 3 they were in less. 4 only at the end we see them, they don't even say anything.

Personally, I connected to Tai Lung from the point of view as a "gifted student" (for me, it's academics, not kung fu). A lot of students designated as gifted end up failing later in their schooling because they never learn to study or handle failure. I sympathize with Tai Lung's response to his "first failure", that being denied the Dragon scroll, because I melted down after my first experience with academic failure.

I like that they included ONE moment where Tai smiles, it goes perfect with the fact that he never smiles again
He smiles when he's finished escaping and sends the Duck to let Shifu know he's on his way, and he smiles while talking to Tigress on the bridge and as he knocks the Five unconscious. He also has a few moments at the end of the film when he asks if Po ran away, when he gets the scroll, and when Po tells him that Shifu didn't teach him the fingerhold technique. He does smile several times though-out the film, namely whenever he has the upper hand, because he is confident in his abilities.

@@zeddicuss Could have been so cool too. Imagine if she spent her time copying all of their techniques, their overall strategies, appearance, etc. but didn't actually need to incapacitate them. She was a super fan, not a thief like Kai.
Picture it. Po can't beat her by himself because she can mirror literally all of his abilities, and the five are otherwise occupied. Instead of a traitor turned ally being a new character, Po asks for help first from Oogway, who says no since he is supposed to be dead, but while he's there he sees the other villains too. We get some catharsis from Kai and Shen, but Tai Lung volunteers to help in exchange for coming back to life. As someone who was in jail during the Chameleons preparations, she never had a chance to copy him, so together they are able to win, with Tai Lung learning the lesson Oogway always had and returning to the afterlife willingly. There, he dismisses Oogway, who tries to complement on the progress, but out of self assurance instead of spite.
Imma have to disagree with you. The fourth movie did not ruin Tai Lung. I actually appreciate his cleaner more relaxed demeanor

Honestly something I find pretty upsetting personally is that they could have turned this 'plot hole' into an actual part of the story. It would be so simple to say that 'the Chameleon was turned away from all these other places because THEY thought she was too small, even though there are other places in the world that are willing to train smaller animals', and have her discover, through Mantis, that she doesn't NEED to be big to learn how to fight.
Of course, that kinda falls apart when I take into account the fact that the Chameleon can literally just turn into anyone, and she doesn't even need to 'steal their Kung-Fu' or whatever to do so. That could ALSO have been a plot point, even just making her insecure about herself, and hate that she has to turn into other, larger animals to be taken seriously, could have made her significantly more interesting. It could be a nice parallel to Po in the first movie, who was ridiculed for being a panda. I love the idea of a character who has an ability that they hate using, not because of any physical drawback but simply because they don't think it suits them. Thinking about this makes me depressed, lol.
This, or have It be a cover that's later explained by a master that rejected her as she avenges her self, a cover for the rejection being they feared her affinity for witchcraft, her shape-shifting or hated her family for something they did in the past that she was not aware of, honestly weird no one pointed out we had never seen a Chameleon up to this point. Meh, it's just ppl trying to escape in the most dumb dramatic way possible. Tai Lung? The man was such meance they had to have 1000 guards, deep in the mountains, chained up AND acupoint restraints, AND hypothetically impossible deep dungeon level to escape with only one way out and in. I'll watch that any day.
Imagine the chameleon bringing back all the villains, only for Lord Shen to overshadow her and using his cunning to convince the other baddies to become their leader, styling on the chameleon, finishing her off and proceeding to do some unfinished business in an ultimate three-on-one twist confrontation!

I've seen a similar idea on one of the videos by Horror TH-camr "VibingLeaf" where it's a Kung Fu Panda Analog Horror where it has the evil spirit of Lord Shen haunt the dreams of Po, and give him horrid nightmares every night where it has him in pure pain. If they were gonna bring back Shen, they should've done THAT. Not only is it a cold way to bring back a villain but it also stays true to the dark demeanor of the movie Shen debated in.

I’m amazed by the idea of someone ranking Kai lower then The Chamaeleon. Kai betrayed Oogway, smashed the Jade Palace and managed to scare Shifu and the Furious 5. Plus his presentation was legendary. So legendary that The Chamaeleon was basically a direct rip off. Kai is genuinely my favorite out of the 4 villains because he blends Tai Lung’s comedic side with the stage presence of Lord Shen. Plus he was far more of a challenge for Po then Tai Lung. The Chamaeleon is literally a disgrace to the franchise while Kai made the third movie in terms of threat color scheme and fear factor. Kai’s signature was green and that was ripped off and done significantly worse with 4. The shape shifting was far too similar of a concept of chi stealing. The metal and big city idea was ripped straight from 2. Not to mention the final battle is pathetic. The Chamaeleon goes down with the pathetic amount of effort and when the fox girl ends up taking her out with basically no Kung Fu training whatsoever it made me wanna throw up in my mouth.

It's Oogway who betrayed Kai. Both were ambitious warlords, they took and destroyed whatever they wanted, but the near death experience of Oogway ahowed how fopliah that crusade of them were. One day they would die and be forgotten, everything they worked for would be destroyed. Both saw chi as the answer to that, Oogway would useit as a way to build a legacy, something to be taught even after he passed aeay, Kai on the other hand sae it as a way to make himself immortal amd to lift himself above all other. One was compassionate and generous, the other was selfish and greedy

Yes I agree. A lot of people don't like his personality but I really enjoy it. I like that he's less serious than the others. The really serious and dark stuff was dealt with in the second movie so the third movie being lighter makes sense. His slightly more jokey personality works too, given how he was friends with Oogway of all people lol.

There is another reason why Kai wanted the power, Oogway had all but ereased his memory and by the time of 3, no one remembers who he was. He wanted to destroy everything Oogway had created as repayment to make him just him, forgotten.
Yeah I really like that motive because it plays into Kai’s whole powers, and his design. The green color of his does a great job of showing his lust, and envy
The Chameleon having little to no backstory was just lazy. They could've done so much better than "I was too short."
Like tie her to the first film, tie her to Tai Lung and explain how he was left as a child to Shifu: It could be shown that the Chameleon was the leader of a growing criminal organization, a mafia group, and Tai Lung's parents had wronged her and now being pursued by her goons. To protect their child, they left Tai at the Jade Palace and ran, eventually getting caught by the Chameleon and killed. It would answer who were Tai Lung's parents, why was he abandoned, and give the Chameleon some kind of connection to the past films. Perhaps she would even try to thank Po for ending Tai to settle the problems dealt to her by his parents.

Actually in the original script, they wanted ALL the new characters to have no backstory, but some people spoke up on how fucking stupid that is and they added some dialogue to have some modicum of backstory

That's a pretty neat idea (infinitely better than the movie) but I think I prefer the implication Tai Lung's parents just didn't want him. Not everyone abandons their child because they want to protect them. Some people just don't want the kid. Of course, this is a fact that might be too terrifying for child viewers so I'd be wary of showing that in a kid movie but the implication worked fine. It further explains Tai Lung's desperation to please Shifu for fear of abandonment.
On the other hand, though, even if Tai's parents loved him he couldn't know the real reasons, so his reaction would still be the same. And one advantage would be the possibility of resolving or diminishing his childhood trauma. As I said, it's not a bad idea. It would just feel too much like Po's story to me.

Kai does have a very interesting backstory. In the Flashback, it seems that Kai and Master Oogway were ambitious warriors. But Oogway was able to see kindness from the Pandas. But, Kai was not able to see their kindness. Then at the Jade palace, Shifu says he won't let him destroy Oogways memory. Then Kai said, "why, he destroyed mine?". Kai doesn't only have power, he also wants revenge. Oogway completely got rid of him from history (kind of). As seen when Kai returned to the Mortal Realm.

Honestly I would have written Chameleon as the Cursed Child/ Cursed Chameleon because I will write how every chameleon is capable to only change the color to adapt their environment and to hide but only the Cursed Chameleon is capable of copying others and also capable of copying other Masters.
Kai also follows the theme of not letting go of the past that Kung Fu Panda Villains have. He was the warrior who kept fighting.
When he an Oogway entered the Valley of the Panda's he didn't see Chi as the means for Peace and Healing like Oogway. He saw it as the Coup de Grace, the power to end all power. Even in death he kept going, accumulating his ultimate power and when he returned not only was he faced with one of the very people he took the Chi technique from, but Oogways successor no less. Kai is more poetic to the series as a whole. He's the villain Po inherited from Oogway.
I think one of the things that elevates the other villains is that when they fight people like the Furious Five, you see that they actually struggle against them, and it shows that beating these characters are act a feat and they aren’t just some people that get beaten up

I love Tai Lung, but I will say that he definitely fell from grace at the end of the movie, he became a bumbling idiot for no reason he didn’t get blinded by rage or anything, he just suddenly became a dummy.
Something that I find funny is that the chameleon has a similar backstory to minkey, a character that's from Kao the kangroo 2022, but I honestly find Minkey more intimidating since using the eternal crystals he bassicly brainwashed the best teachers of fighting into transforming their dojo's into making a giant jayabomb factory (juice that would make you stronger) or a spa (esentially making them lazier). However this was with intent with becoming the world greatest warrior since he was denied being one wich made him the black sheep of the monkey community, also took control of someone that actually tried to defeat him and later made him fight his own son, Kao (the main character)
Maybe having no backstory, changing the physical appearance and having an unknown name could be indications for the unambiguous identity the chameleon has. Maybe the whole fourth movie focuses on the subject of identity and identity changing. (Spoiler alerts:) Po now becomes the spiritual leader, Zhen becomes the new Dragon Warrior, and the chameleon seemly "switches" between many physical identities and "steals" the identities of many Kung Fu Masters. Its such a shame that they didnt put more effort into the story.
1st movie: Challenges Po's physical strength
2 nd movie: Challenging Po's mental strength
3 rd movie: Challenging Po's spiritual strength
The 4 th movie probably was supposed to challenge Po's whole identity, but the story unfortunally was bad written.
Id say kai moreso wanted revenge on oogway for his perceived betrayal, banishing him to the spirit world essentially made kai vanish from history- so he wanted to also erase any memorials for oogway too

Kai is a spirit being who can go toe to toe with Oogway, defeated Tai Lung in the spirit realm (you can see Tai Lung’s amulet on Kai’s belt, most notably when Kai takes Monkey’s and Viper’s Chi) defeated Shifu and nearly defeated Po, until Po’s friends helped him. That’s how unstoppable Kai is, that everyone who was defeated by him put up the best fight they could only to get defeated until Po stopped him for good. It is this unstoppable nature, being bad to the bone, having a good voice actor and a badass theme to top it off that makes Kai my favourite Kung Fu Panda villain. Tai Lung is a close second, followed by Lord Shen in third place. Unfortunately, the new villain in Kung Fu Panda 4 is last place in my book because she doesn’t live up to the 3 original Kung Fu Panda villains

The person who came up with the idea of the chameleon forgot to take her to the gym! Chameleon is literally a bootleg Kai that’s weaker and forgot to go the gym and didn’t even take very long for her to be powerful! Unlike Kai that spent 500 years in the spirit realm taking chi of every master! She is just too rushed!

The thing people overlook about Kai is he doesn’t want power just for the sake of having power.
He wanted power to return to the mortal realm and destroy the legacy of Oogway, a brother he once fought side by side with and betrayed him. Kai wants revenge out of jealousy for Oogways success. While Oogway built an entire legacy and valley to call home. Kai was forgotten and no one has ever heard of him until he returned to the mortal realm. This is Kai’s motive for power in KFP 3.
Nonetheless Shen is my favourite because he was a powerful threat not through his physique or his strength but his cunning and his intelligence. Xx

Kai was awesome even before The Chameleon. It is just that Kai was overshadowed by Tai Lung and Shen. Now Kai is welcome to sit at the Cool Kids Table because of the Chameleon.

Kai has a very unwise fighting style, he has a great design, the green glowing eyes are unnatural and do a good job of presenting him as a threat, he knows not to make a badass entrance, he proved himself to be a threat in the beginning of the love by beating Oogway, his backstory sheds some light on the type of person Oogway used to be and implies why the Pandas have strayed away from their Chi abilities. He’s comedic but still a serious threat. Kai just needed his backstory to be a little more fleshed out and some more screen time cuz I genuinely enjoyed seeing him on screen

The great takes and amazing walkthrough or the so accurate one liners. Also in Kai's defense he feelt betrayed by Oogway and jealousy of Oogway learning chi which made him want to take revenge. It was not just power, but still this is an amazing video!

My favorite kung fu panda villain is definitely Lord Shen. He's such an incredible villain. He sadistic, uncaring, cruel, and cunning, yet also has a backstory that explains that he was afraid of being destroyed by a warrior and also, Schaffrillas Production said that there was this sense of regret and chance of redemption. he could've easily killed the fortune teller, but he doesn't. Instead, he lets her go. Hearing how his parents loved him so much that banishing him killed them, which made it feel like after he was banished, they took their own lives. He's a perfect mix between emotional yet still evil and a menacing threat. I honestly believe both Lord Shen and Tai Lung are up there as some of DreamWorks' best villains alongside Death, Grimmel the Grisly, Pitch Black, and Big Jack Horner.
Kung Fu panda 4 is a serialized movie as in this is more tied to the series than the trilogy, similar to the new megamind movie that just looks like 2 episodes prolonged into a movie, if u throw it in the series u won't notice the difference and tv series as we all know uses way less resources that s why the new megamind movie looks so dull and blend and nothing like the OG movie that contained all the heart, sweat and tears of the creators. And this new panda movie is exactly the same quality (content wise) as empty and shallow as the megamind movie, just a cash grab

Kai’s main story ark was to erase the story and memory of oogway. He was stuck in oogways shadow for so long that no one except po knew who he was. His turn to evil was out of jealousy of oogway because everyone in china knew and adored the gentle and wise tortoise kung fu master.
Tai Lung didn’t want to be the dragon warrior, but Shifu gave him that idea? And Po was instead the new chosen dragon? Say, that certainly sounds very familiar to me.
In Ninjago Sensei Wu’s first student was Morro who was poor and tight with money before he became Wu’s student. But then Morro eventually had a hunger once Sensei Wu told him he could be the green ninja. So naturally when he returned from the cursed realm he tried to destroy and curse Ninjago just because of his jealousy of Lloyd and determined that he wanted to be the green ninja no matter what. Yet, Tai Lung and Morro has kind of the same thing going on with them
I never noticed the color coding be4. It's actually really genius and shows each villains main vice. Tai lung is bitter and cold for shifu wasting his life with endless training, hence blue. Shen is enraged by his parents and his fate abandoning him, hence red. Kai is filled with envy and jealousy of oogway becoming a hero and a remembered legend, hence green. Really good video, made me think alot

The funniest part is originally Chameleon did not have any backstory and was only given one after a failed first screening. And yet still being "small" being a reason is dumb unless you somehow forget about Mantis being in the Furious 5.... Then again the movie forgot about the Furious 5 and also pretend the series are not cannon as the directors behind KFP4 say that TV experience is not good enough for film experience as anyone working on TV is inferior to them.

The Chameleon has the most weak sauce backstory and motivation ever.
I don't know if it will make her a better villain? But what if perse, her village or home was under attack and she wanted to learn kung fu to defend it, but was rejected because she was "small" and was probably seen to be not capable in terms physical prowess, not one whom she seeked for help helped her till her home was destroyed. Her being the only one left and filled with thirst for revenge, she spent her time learning mystical arts such as magic. Now that she has gained power to prove herself, she reeks havok to those who who ignored her and seeks to dismantle kung-fu from their society and culture out of spite.
Kai would actually be the most important character because if Kai never helped oagway and found the panda village then oagway would never of found chi which would make it so there would be no dragon warrior
A lot of people giving Kai a bad time just because the previous 2 villain were so impeccable. Kai brings so much mythos and backstory to the world itself. Also because his character tied to oogway and old master, there is no direct connection to the current character because Oogway was dead so Kai seems a litle bit distant unlike Tai Lung or Lord Shen.
Its kinda a shame that the chameleon isnt a good written villain. I really adored her design so I had pretty high predictions on her whole character.
I always kinda thought (before knowing the truth) that the Chameleon could have been Oogway's girl friend or stuff like that before Oogway discovered/created the Kung Fu. Maybe Oogway chooses his destiny (discovering Kung Fu, teaching Kung Fu, spreading wisdom, helping the new Dragon Warrior to fulfill his fate) over her what makes her feel betrayed. (Yeah, let her be also around 1000 years old, its pretty fitting for a sorceress.)
Intimidated by her abilities as sorceress and witch, people started to fear what they dont understand and saw her as a sadistic dangerous threat what led her becoming more and more hatred by the folk. Her hatred against the folk also increases.
And since she becomes a more and more sadistic sorceress Oogway also saw the growing "dark nature in her heart" (like he did in Tai Lung) what also have been a reason Oogway distanced more from her when he couldnt persuade her to overcome her hatred. She wanted to take revenge on the folk and rejected Oogway's peaceful intentions. She now has exactly become what the folk saw in her what led Oogway to leave her completely.
She is so upset that she starts blaming everything that had to do with Oogway for her pain. Including Kung Fu and of course our Dragon Warrior. So stealing Kung Fu and destroying the Dragon Warrior is now her way to deal with her emotional pain and to take revenge on Oogway.
Like, if this alternate story is better than what we got.

Just want to put a couple of reason of why Tai lung is my favorite Kung fu panda villain and top 5 in animated villains.
1. Tai lung was the only character in the franchise that needed extra bad stuff like saying he attacked the residence of the valley of peace to be less sympathetic. For those who don't know in the original Kung fu panda movie critics got to see Tai lung never attacked the Valley of peace and tried to strictly keep the battle between him and Shifu and no one else. This made movie critics love him more than Po and even some critics grew to hate Po for getting in the way thus the changes.
2. You touched on Tai lung design a bit but because you don't like him as much you couldn't really explain it and under sold his design hard. Tai lung design is so scary because he is a dark reflection of Tigress. We see the attitude shift in Tigress when Po is named dragon warrior and should could have easily gone down that path if not for the threat of Tai lung taking priority. And his design reflects this parallel perfectly. He's a dark big brooding figure with the color pallete of Grey, black and purple. Colors associated with darkness, confusion, and grief. His muscular frame with his huge glaring teeth perfectly work together with his yellow eyes and silent disposition that he perfectly triggers that primal instinct of seeing a predator. Compared to Tigress lighter color pallete of orange and red, two colors associated with warmth and security. She's small with a cute face, and while she is not talkative, she talks more than Tai lung, and her overall body language is inviting. Two polar opposites that was one day away from being one in the same.
HONORABLE MENTION: gotta mention bros a badass in combat and has some of the smoothest fight scenes in animation history.
3. My most important reason I live Tai Lung is not just the backstory but the way the movie uses the backstory to grow and shape Tai Lung as the movie progresses. So many movies waste sympathetic villains by making them cartoonishly evil and hellbent on being evil no matter what. Tai Lung however? They use his backstory beautifully to show even throughout his rampage, he's still a good person who's been made to sit in his anger for too long. My favorite example of this is in the Shifu fight. The fact that throughout that fight he could have killed shifu at any time but yet constantly held himself back says everything. To anyone who says Tai Lung wasn't holding back watch the fight again. Tai Lung was destroying Shifu at every corner and all Shifu could do was defend yet the only time Shifu takes any real damage is when Tai Lung gets lost in his rage and straight up bodies Shifu no problem with his full power. It's even shown when Shifu says sorry there's that crack in his cold demeanor in which he realized how much he meant to Shifu and that maybe they could go back to how they were. But he's quickly swallowed by his anger of all that time he had wasted training for nothing, all that time he spent rotting in prison without so much as a visit from the man that loved him like a son when he was useful but discarded him as soon as he was worthless. That one moment perfectly reaffirms for us, the audience just why Tai Lung had gone evil all while truly letting the audience understand his pain. That's why Tai Lungs the GOAT.

Was, as you said, an opposite of Po. An example of, in simplest terms, making the wrong decision.
And Lord Shen, the entire reason for Po’s life without his mother and father, the attempted genocide of his kind. And Kai while having more of a connection towards Ogway, when after Po as a last stand towards removing Ogway’s legacy.
The Chameleon had no connection at all. She had no real reason to be a villain, was not a victim, did not know of any overwhelming pride or ego.

You are right. Both Tai Lung and Lord Shen had moments where they soften and you can see the grief welling up in their eyes only to be suppressed once again. They had a mature complexity the Chameleon sorely lacked.
Remember the part where she merged the kung fu masters into that flying thing? That was not a wow that's so cool moment so much as wait she can do that?

the only change that I would do to Kai´s backstory would be to say he didn´t start taking other peoples chi for himself, but rather for another, imagine if Kai startet stealing chi to save Oogway form certain death and later on Oogway learns about the destruction Kai caused and decided to stop him
