  • The Dragon’s Tooth is an aptly named rock formation at the top of Cove Mountain just 16 miles from Roanoke, Virginia. Along with McAfee Knob and Tinker Cliffs, this hike is part of the famed Virginia Triple Crown.

While the McAfee Knob hike provides phenomenal photo ops, the shorter trek to Dragon’s Tooth is definitely more challenging - and can be more rewarding.
Don’t let the shorter 5 mile distance fool you, the uphill climb is strenuous and requires the use of hands and feet to navigate the rocky sections near the top. There are iron rungs and stone steps to help you cling to the steep mountain side. With the effort, however, comes the reward of rugged outcroppings and tremendous panoramic views. It is possible to climb the 35-foot tooth itself, but this is no easy task and should be done with great caution.

Great video! I plan on hiking this along with McAfee Knob and Tinker Cliffs (aka the Triple Crown) in the spring. Can't wait!

Virginia has a lot to offer. We still have more to visit. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

When I hiked Dragons Tooth, we got within 200 feet and had to turn around due to nearby lightning strikes. The top section is challenging without a downpour; I wouldn’t recommend it in the rain- it can get slickery!

I bet it can get slick. There are many places on the hike when you're at a cliff ledge. And the tooth would be a bad place to be in a thunderstorm. Thanks for sharing your experience, though!
