  • Audie Murphy was a highly decorated World War II veteran. He was a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor as well as numerous awards for valor. He was also recognized by France and Belgium for his heroism. After the war, he returned to the U.S. and became and actor and musician. He struggled with issues related to PTSD. He died in a plane crash along with the pilot and four other passengers. The plane crashed into Brush Mountain, not far from Catawba, Virginia. In 1974, the Christiansburg Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars erected a monument to honor Audie Murphy. The monument stands just off the Appalachian Trail near the crash site.
    I drove up Brush Mountain via Forest Service roads and then walked to the Appalachian Trail. Once on the AT, I hiked northbound along the ridge of Brush Mountain until I reached the monument. Thanks for watching!

    Thank You for posting this. I traveled all the way from my home in California to see the monument that Honor's Audie Murphy. I met Mr. Murphy in 1969 & I was 10 years old that time. John Wayne was a friend of my Grandfather's & it's how I was able to meet the World War ll hero. It wasn't until long after his death in a plane crash did it really dawn on me on my meeting Mr. Murphy at such a young age. I was a lucky young man & it's a down right shame that such a person as Audie Murphy went through a World War, just to die in a plane crash at the young age of 45. Rest in Peace Audie, America we'll always remember you & the brave men who fought beside in the War! God bless your memory.

    Yes, we do owe that generation so much. It’s not in parades or banners, that we honor them. But in remembering and being thankful for our country. Thanks Dad. Thank you

      @SmellNRoses  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for watching and for your excellent comment. You are spot on about remembering and being thankful. Many of America's wars are dubious at best, but its pretty hard to make any valid argument against our involvement in WWII. The world was a better place because that generation did not hesitate to step up confront things that were wrong.

    • @SmellNRoses
      @SmellNRoses  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a pretty neat monument, unlike anything else I have seen on the AT. There are even two solar lights to illuminate the flag at night. It was also nice to see several benches placed at the monument site as well as along that section of the trail...no doubt many of those who visit the site are not normally hikers and may not have the stamina to make the hike without taking breaks. Normally I would be against leaving such artifacts in the woods, but in this case its understandable, and its very nicely done and well maintained. All the items people have left are confined to the monument itself and I did not see any trash anywhere along the hike. The overlook was a nice bonus to the visit. Thanks so much for watching, my friend!

    Sinking Creek Mountain is the flattest thing I've seen in a while. Were you saying the Brush Mountain East Wilderness is brand new or something else? I'm reading it was established in 2009.

    • @SmellNRoses
      @SmellNRoses  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah Sinking Creek Mountain, or Brush Mountain (the one I was on) could each be the poster for Virginia's Ridge and Valley...they are characterized by very steep slopes and thin knife edge ridge lines, but little up and down along the ridge itself. Sinking Creek is also a great section of AT to hike, it has several rocky "overlooks" with some awesome views and its not a heavily visited area. Yes I was referring to Brush Mountain East Wilderness and you are correct it was formed in 2009, so its certainly not all that 'new.' Like much of my commentary in this video it was sorely lacking lol. It was not my intention to infer that it was brand new, but what I should have said was that it is one of the youngest wilderness areas. The 2009 law created several new designated wilderness areas in Virginia, expanded others, and also designated some National Scenic Areas as well. As far as I know, there have not been any new additions since then. Thanks for checking out my video!

    • @bigzach322

      @SmellNRoses  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Audie was an amazing individual, like so many from his generation. He did some incredible things during his service in WWII. Just read the first paragraph of his Wikipedia article alone and you'll be blown away. It's kind of sad that after all he survived during the war, he would come back home to struggle with PTSD, and later in life be killed in a plane crash on a mountain in Virginia. The monument is located very close to the crash site. Thanks for checking out my video, my friend!

    In 1999 during my thruhike of the Appalachian Trail I wanted to do one last 5 miles over a ridge and get to water. By pure accident I looked up from my feet and trail to spot a small hand painted sign nailed to a tree. It pointed to the left with the word "Monument". It was getting late but took a chance and went down the side trail. Hence, I arrived at Audie Murphy's monument.

    Sic Semper Tyrannis..........................

    • @SmellNRoses
      @SmellNRoses  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah man Sinking Creek Mountain is an impressive ridge. It has some great hiking opportunities and its relatively unknown, not a popular spot, probably because its a bit remote for anyone other than maybe Roanoke and Blacksburg, and the touristy hikers in those places have other more well known places to go overcrowd LOL. I have not been on Sinking Creek since my VT days, I want to get back up there. The AT runs along the ridge for 4 or 5 miles, and there are a few connector trails to get you up there to it. I've heard about some hidden waterfalls up in there too, far off the trails. My kind of thing, but I've not looked into it much. Anyway, yeah it was neat to check out the Audie Murphy Monument. Audie was the most decorated soldier from WWII. He received every medal for valor from the Army, the Congressional Medal of Honor, as well as numerous recognitions from France and Belgium. Sad that after surviving all those horrific events, he later died in a plane crash somewhere very close to the monument site. Pretty cool to learn about your grandfather's service. That is awesome. My grandfather wanted to enlist, also into the Navy, but was not accepted due to his vision. He had lost one eye in a weird accident as a child. All his brothers enlisted, some of the younger ones also lied about their ages, and I think all served in the Pacific as well. Our grandparents' generation was something for sure.

      Thanks so much for watching, my friend. It is sad the way he died, after everything he went through in life.
