  • East Coast Music Award Nominee for Fan's Choice Video of the Year.
The second single from Heather Rankin's debut solo album is "We Walk As One." Written by Rankin with David Tyson, it is a tribute to her family and her Cape Breton roots. Fittingly, she is joined on the track by her brother, Jimmy and sister, Cookie.
The footage is of a musical gathering in the family home, the house we grew up in on Back Street, Mabou. The year is around 1973. It is very lonesome watching it, seeing how young and full of life we were, unaware of all the wonderful and challenging times that lay ahead.
In one shot, Jimmy, Cookie, Susan, Nancy and I are singing a Gaelic song. I have no teeth. My father teased that I was going to need a partial.
In another shot, both my parents (Kathleen and Alex J or Buddy) are sitting on the sofa enjoying the music with my brother David and myself sitting between them. Clearly, my father is modelling his Elvis side burns.
There is another shot of my four eldest siblings playing together, John Morris (fiddle) Geraldine (piano), Genevieve (guitar) and David (ukulele).
Raylene and Cookie (smaller of the two) are step dancing.
Later on Raylene is seen looking very pensive, head tilted to the side while listening to the music. She was always the contemplative type, wise beyond her years.
Produced by Playmaker Films, Directed by Scott Simpson (playmakerfilms.com)
Heather Rankin’s debut solo album A Fine Line is AVAILABLE NOW on Cadence Music.

    Lyrics: (H. Rankin, D. Tyson)
A humble abode at the end of the road
    That's what we called home
We built our dreams from nothing it seems
    Working dimes to the bone
Through thick and thin around and back again
    We held our own
    Cause we walked as one
We may be wandering down different roads
I still believe we walk as one
Chaos and laughter raising the rafters
    No room to breathe
It was duly noted we weren't voted
    Most likely to succeed
But we made our choice to find our voice
    In harmony
    And we walked as one
We may be wandering down different roads
I still believe we walk as one
It wasn't all good news as the decades flew
    There isn't anything I wouldn't do
To be with the ones who passed away too soon
The pumpkin's carved there's frost on the yard
    A first winter's kiss
I feel inclined to go back in time
    And reminisce
And chiming in is an old violin playing my heartstrings
    And I began to sing
We may be wandering down different roads
    I still believe, still believe
We may be wandering down different roads
    I still believe
I still believe we walk as one

The Rankin Family was a wonderful gift from Canada to this old Texas boy. Thank you Heather, for your part and for this wonderful song. Those we lose aren't truly lost. They are just waiting for us in a new land. They won't leave without us so we can take our time and travel that road when the time is right.

My older sister is 44 years old and battling brain cancer and she was diagnosed 1 year ago. My older sister and I grew up very close and this song brings us closer together cause it speaks to and from the heart.
Thank you for the song with such great meaning and it will be a special song for me and my older sister. I don't know how long she has and I am dedicating this song to my older sister.

What a beautiful song….fits the present day circumstances involving Ukraine’s fight with Russia! The people are walking as one to keep their independence…..young , old, children and woman together to fight the evil of Putin..and now the countries of the democratic countries walk together to fight this evil! We Walk As One!!

Worked up on Mabou ridge back in 1993 building a barn for a dairy farm. Spent all my breaks listening to my Rankin family, Rita McNeil and Men of the deeps cassettes. Thanks again for this song and video. I would love to live in Mabou when I retire

I know exactly where that was filmed, although I’m a Torontonian born and bred, I’m an east coaster at heart, my mom being from Antigonish NS, and the rest of my family scattered all throughout the Maritimes, it’s in my blood, it’s in my very soul, and gets my heart to beating to the sound of Canada, from my Irish ancestry.
