A true classic from one of Motown’s more obscure acts-a message song that still stands the test of time-now given the D-Cat treatment it truly deserves-BIG thumbs up,my friend!👍

My FAVORITE childhood song that I still listen to today! "Beware of the pat on the back, it just might hold you back." I work in Corporate America. That line is one of the REALEST!

The message of this song still holds truth. This song perhaps came out in 1971 because it's early 70's Soul. I'm 66 Yrs old and, "Who's still listening to this song on Feb 7, 2022? Classic songs will always remain popular, especially if the message stood the test of time.

I was doing chores one Saturday and pulled this song our of my memory of hearing this song on the radio! I remembered every word w/out really understanding the meaning of them. I really, really wishrd I had listened more closely back then. I would have saved myself alot of grief over the years. Hurts when you realize you've trusted the wrong person or set of people----and they take advantage of you.

    Smiling faces sometimes
    Pretend to be your friend
    Smiling faces show no traces
Of the evil that lurks within (can you dig it?)
    Smiling faces, smiling faces, sometimes
    They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies and I got proof
    Oh, oh, yeah
    Let me tell you
The truth is in the eyes 'cause the eyes don't lie, amen
Remember, a smile is just a frown turned upside down my friend
So, hear me when I'm saying
Smiling faces, smiling faces, sometimes, yeah
    They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies and I got proof
    (Beware) beware of the handshake
That hides the snake (can you dig it, can you dig it?)
I'm a-tellin' you beware of the pat on the back
It just might hold you back
Jealousy, (jealousy) misery (misery) envy (envy)
I tell you you can't see behind
    Smiling faces, smiling faces, sometimes
Hey, they don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies and I got proof
Hey, your enemy won't do you no harm
(Rap on) 'cause you'll know where he's comin' from
Don't let the handshake and the smile fool ya
Take my advice, I'm only tryin' to school ya
    Smiling faces, smiling faces, sometimes
    They don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies and I got proof
    Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes

One of the baddest jams to come out of 1971 along with Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady,"Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly," and Billy Preston's, "Outa Space!" I was a teenager, and my brothers and sisters, and I would jam to this at our house parties! To this day, I always carry the powerful words to this song around with me!! I always tell my daughters that everybody who smiles at you ain't your friend! They smile in your face and will stab you in the back! That message still resonates with me today! Beware people!

This song should be the theme song, the Hallmark or the National Anthem for all the honest Entrepreneurs, business owners, business professionals, and the hard working people out there.
Every person who is going to school to become business professionals should get a copy of this song and archive it into their training and school notes. This song should be a prerequisite for business development and business training classes.

time, place, perfect recall when listening to this song on my car radio.....on way home from first job at Tx Medical Center......realizing I should be looking behind the smiling faces (curtains) of anyone ....especially new .....who had influence on my life, if I let them. Found this cd on internet.....will be shipping today.....this song is prophetic.....moment this song hit me was 1972....driving 1966 Chevy Super Sport convertible...was even rainy, dark evening..after most had already gone home from work....must have made an impression..lasting.

THIS IS A GREAT REMIX THAT WILL BE ADDED TO MY COLLECTION AND WILL GET MUCH PLAY TIME AND EVOKE SOME GREAT MEMORIES. YOU HAVE BROUGHT IT HOME AGAIN. THANK YOU FOR YOUR AWESOME WORK AND KEEP IT UP!!!!!

Thank you Mr. DJDiscoCat for adding one of the greatest recorded songs (Melody, Rhythm, and Lyrics) to be recorded by Gordy-Motown to your music repertoire. This song still resonates today in the 2020s as it did in 1971. It was a reminder then, as it is today, that anyone we encounter in our lives, whether a stranger, coworker, or family member can be a negative force/energy behind a smiling face out to see us hurt or fail. No matter your relationship with a person, including family members, we never know what's behind their smile. Unfortunately, the truth is not always in the eyes cause the eyes can lie sometimes, my friend, and I have proof...

Oh man the intro was so catchy when this song came out. Those B Major horns interweaved throughout the various melodies gives this song its soulful groove.

CLOSED MY EYES AND JUST LISTENED TO THE SONG FROM BEGINNING TO END. BROUGHT MEMORIES OF RETURNING FROM VIETNAM, AND STATIONED IN CAMP PENDLETON CALIFORNIA IN 1971. YOU JUST DO NOT HEAR THOSE MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS TODAY, UNLESS IT IS AN CLASSICAL MUSIC BEING PLAYED. YES MUSIC IS A REAL HISTORY LESSON FOR WHAT SOCIETY IS LIVING THROUGH. AMERICA AND THE ENTIRE WORLD HAVE BEEN LIVING IN TROUBLE TIMES FOR A VERY LONG TIME. THAT IS A FACT THAT NO ONE CAN DISPUTE. SAD BUT TRUE.

I remember my dad bassing the boom boom back ground parts and sipping on some Cutty Sark. This song played the first time I tasted scotch. I was 10, whoa, ... the next time I had Scotch it was a single malt and I was 38. He often spoke words of wisdom through music. And he told me to listen carefully to the music as well as the words. To me music then, were stories of and about life, and pearls of wisdom obtained through experience.
