  • On March 22, 2023 Terran 1 went from earth to space encompassing many historic firsts.
    ✅ First methane fueled rocket in the West to reach space, well over the 100km Karman Line (only other is China)
    ✅ First nearly entirely 3D printed rocket to fly and prove 3D printing is viable by passing Max-Q, the max stress on the rocket
    ✅ First methane orbital-class rocket to successfully complete stage 1 flight, main engine cutoff, and second stage separation in the West (only other is China)
    ✅ First-ever second stage ignition attempt during the vacuum of flight for a methane fueled orbital rocket in the West, collected first-ever flight data.
    A dream turned reality. 🚀 Thanks for playing, GG.

      Yeah, I teared up. I've been waiting so long to see if this would work and I'm beside myself with excitement to see that we can now literally 3D print rockets. Saying it out loud still doesn't seem real to me. We can now 3D print rockets. Just imagine the possibilities...

    I was born in 1952. In my lifetime I've watched some of the first satellite launches, the entire American space program from Mercury through Voyager, the Shuttle to all the Mars probes and on to this. From then to now we've gone from prop driven airliners to this. Wow! It's been quite a ride. I can hardly wait to see what's next.

      I was born in 1953, so I've been on much the same ride. Watched the first Moon landing on direct transmission (as direct as possible). And then the Moon missions stopped and the development slowed to a crawl for most of my life. Now, finally, things are speeding up again thanks to companies such as SpaceX, Rocket Lab and Relativity Space. I wish Relativity Space even more luck and even more fun next time.

    Are they planning to return the first stage or is it always gonna be disposable?

    • @fighteer1
      @fighteer1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Terran 1 is completely expendable. Terran R, which is in the same size class as Falcon 9, will have a reusable first stage and plans for a reusable second stage, although that is not certain.

    • @dimanyak373
      @dimanyak373 ปีที่แล้ว

      the word you're looking for is expendable. And that's the point of this rocket, that it's very cheap to make because of 3d printing technology, so it can fly very frequently despite being expendable. They're gonna make a reusable Tarran R anyways

    • @fighteer1
      @fighteer1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dimanyak373 Clarification: 3D printing is not cheap, at least not the way it’s done here. The main reason it’s being used is the ability to very rapidly iterate on the design. Also, you can make shapes that would be impractical with welded sections or molds.
      Relativity is making a big bet with this technology.

    • @annando
      @annando ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fighteer1 Isn't 3D printing also more reliable than welding? BTW: Do you know if there is some weight penalty with 3D printing?

    • @fighteer1
      @fighteer1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@annando Sadly, I only know the very basics. This is the first time that additive manufacturing has been used to construct the body of an orbital rocket, so there is undoubtedly a lot of refinement and improvement that can be achieved. Figuring out the optimal mass/strength ratio will be one of those refinements.
