My first car was a '72 Gran Torino so this hits my nostalgia button. My parents gave it to me with the "if you can get it running you can have it" line. I learned a ton about cars getting that thing to run and how if you buy a used engine you should really get some kind of return policy in case it turns out to be a dud.
For the 400m engine, the main thing you have to do is raise the compression ratio to between 9:1 to 10:1. Pistons are hard to find but 351 Cleveland pistons can be used if a bushing is used at the small end of the rod. This is because the wrist pin on the 351 is slightly thinner. This does slightly weaken the engine, but that only matters if you're adding a turbo or something else insane. Edelbrock makes a4 barrel to 2 barrel head intake and cam that works great...once you get that compression ratio up!! The 400 also hooks up to the mighty C6 transmission. (You can bow down & whisper how unworthy you are at this time.) Make sure the 9" rear end has trac-lock aka positraction. The car is heavy enough in the back to benefit from this.
Guys what an amazing project!! We are a very small new channel here in the UK and will happily donate to this. I had a daughter born with 4 holes in the heart and know the true value of our uk healthcare system where we don't pay. Hope your uncle is ok and getting the best treatment! Good luck with the project ... We are about to do something here which has a lot in common with you guys ;-) I'll donate when I'm in the office tomorrow. Fantastic car and looking forward to the new episodes!
My dad and I are also restoring a 1974 ford torino (same paint job from the tv show Starsky and Hutch) that we've had for about 20 years so this is really cool to see.
It's a Gran Torino - I subbed. Thanks Steve for being the guy to bring it back to life. Nice Camaro too. I'm here for the duration - keep them coming guys. Chuck in NE Kansas
I think that is the perfect thing to do for him. Unfortunately, it's almost too late for him to enjoy. At least he will have the satisfaction of feeling the wheel and maybe driving it up-and-down the road a few times.
So cool !! You're good guys for helping your uncle with an amazing car !! I have a 74 Torino, Starsky and Hutch replica I'm working on!!! Good luck!!! 👍
THIS is the reason to restore the Torino. Not for views( although the $ will help) but for family. I’d rather watch these kinds of builds than 1000 super cars...
I love that yall are doin this im 16 years old and my dad gave me his 1974 gran torino elite it just needa a transmission fix, new carburetor and a new battery and just primer and paint and get it legal and im set but its gonna take some time because i have to save up to get started on it
Awesome i wanna see your uncle's reaction when it's all restored that'll be epic and hopefully Ford Motorcompany endorses the video like a True Chevy story except it be a True Ford Story!! You guys should reach out to them and see what they think!
You guys are amazing! That’s awesome that you guys give back to family! Wish him the best of luck! Honestly if I won the Porsche I would going to give it to my brother. He drives a little beater and would be a great replacement. But we shall see!! Thank you guys again for all the great vids! Love the Torino rebuild. Excited to see what’s next!!!
Crazy. I also have an uncle in Great Falls MT. I myself am in Billings MT. It’s awesome what you guys are doing. I’m loving it. Keep it up guys and thanks for the great content.
Cool project cant wait to see the outcome!! Just so you know 400-2v is a two barrel carb or two venturis. Granted it is 2 valve's per cylinder but a 400-4v is a 4 barrel carb.
It's no longer a secret we now know you are restoring the car for him and am snitching on you I will call him and tell him about it 😂😂😂😂just kidding you guys really rock can't wait to see it done keep up the great work guys
