Just bumped into Kate in Tonga on our sailing trip through the islands. She was very kind and came and spoke with us for a short time while we waited for the sunset. You have raised a very polite and welcoming daughter! Thank you Kate 🏝️.
Thumbs up to Keith for being so adept at figuring out how to fix so many things. He is a modern renaissance man. I am impressed. Good luck with the rudder.
As painful as this is, I do appreciate you guys showing the realities of boat life instead of filling our heads with only visions of sunshine and rainbows.
Frankly, the endless repairs and frustration have put me off going cruising. I once thought it sounded grand, but I don't WANT to spend my days in "exotic places doing boat repairs." Like most people, I am not nearly as knowledgeable as Keith about all of the boats systems, and it would be constant stress to have things break like this.
Keith is one smart man. They don't make them like him anymore. You are lucky to have him and his knowledge. You couldn't do what you do without him. GOOD JOB KEITH!
My goodness. If anyone thinks that way of life is an escapist's long holiday, this episode certainly shows the reality of the constant problems. One needs to be an engineer and have infinite patience and stamina when things keep going wrong. It is not for the faint hearted but thank you for sharing everything with us. I hope it all gets fixed soon.
Thinking about Jack, Kate and the rest of you over the last few days. You are an amazing family with an incredible group of friends and supporters there to help out. Remember to take time for yourselves. 🫶🏻
Make-sure, you have a very sturdy heavy duty battery isolation /trip switch connected to your lithium battery bank .As friends of ours a few month’s ago, sailing in the Caribbean had a direct ‘ lighting strike hit ‘on the aluminium mast which completely jumped the isolation/trip switch .Hence totally burnt out ALL the electronics on board Minstrel Dancer.
I built my rudders from billet aluminum, they are a two piece design and the two halves bolt together and sandwich the rudder shaft. I machined each half from 1"-1/2 aluminum plate and each side is hollowed with reinforcement ribs remaining. I designed them so they can easily be replaced in the water.
Keith had that look at the end of the video…Your mind was processing a million ways to solve the problem. Good luck fixing all the issues. Safe travels.Z
No bad luck, no bad omen, it’s just a boat. Keith is my hero when it comes to boat maintenance and staying on top of repairs. Yelp it’s just a boat! Good luck on the repair.
Ive always heard 'if you cant tone it, tan it' 😂 Keith I know your struggle...Im on the weight loss journey right now myself! Slow & steady wins the race 😊 YOU GOT THIS!! Renee you are simply the best ❤ Im loving the K & R show 😁♥️
I love watching your videos, I guess we all accept the challenges for the rewards that we enjoy. Thank you for sharing all your challenges and I am always impressed how Kieth can fix, repair or figure out solutions to problems when it seems like everything just keeps piling on. ❤ Love to you all.
Ug! Lost my rudder 3 years ago and thankfully my rudder shaft was undamaged and had a beautiful rudder made which improved the handling of the boat. Wishing you guys the best of luck getting this dropped and a new foil made. Your videos like this are great because its the reality of boat life that people don't get to see.
Hang in there Zatara! You guys rock and are so inspiring, especially through the tough times. Thanks for sharing your journey. Rene, awesome footage and video!
Yes, can steer with the motors (I did it quite often). Hope the 'pouring' events stop. Enough is enough! Wishing you better times. Back to enjoying boat life!
After years of watching, who knew our paths would cross. We were in Puerto Plata on the 5th(cruise ship). That storm rolled through the port about 5:30pm, while we were leaving port towards Grand Turk. We got to see the lighting throughout the night. Safe travels.
I've been watching off and on as a yacht tech in FL and finally binge watched all of your episodes. Very cool to see how you dealt with covid and day to day boat problems. I love Keith's witty banter and one line jokes here and there. Very cool to see how your family all grew into the boat. Hope I can do it someday. Keep up the good work. Thanks for the vlogs. Safe travels
These are my favorite episodes, very exciting, I don’t wish bad things to happen, but I like how Keith and Renee rise to the challenges presented to them.
I have watched all of the Zatara videos and I LOVE IT when Nay Nay starts sounding the ALARM! “It’s a mess out here! Whoooo these waves are like Socotra!” If y’all go back and watch your vids, you will get a kick out of Nay Nay sounding the alarms! Love you guys!!!
I have to agree with the prop hitting the rudder. It may have cracked the shell and with the rough weather you had, it probably forced water inside, splitting it open more. Hopefully you can get it fixed soon.
When Finn leaves that is all your babies gone. Big symbolic empty nest. And the boat ... is feeling the parents resistance in this transition ... and the pain of the transition. And the boat is just reflecting back your pain (dear parents) and then tries to help you by delaying the inevitable. Lovely Boat Spirit being there to hold you pain ... in a big symbolic hurt and pain to so many boat parts. All symbolic of course.
Thanks for letting us see and experience the horizon during the storm, after the calm and then lightening at night. Really nice, once in a lifetime sensation for us that don't or can't travel. Thank you. God bless your entire family!
drill holes through it in several areas put bolt and nut and sheets of plywood or boards as a temporary clip until a good haul out location. or make a drag sock
Zatara, I know it has to be a bummer to run into these snags but think about everything and everywhere you guys have been in that boat!!! Like an RV: maintenance heavy at times. Also remember, WE ALL LIVE VICARIOUSLY THROUGH YOUR "VISION QUEST"!!!! HAHAHAHA. Keep moving forward!!!! These are but momentary setbacks. Love the show!!!
I got to spend a couple weeks last winter in PR and Vieques. It was so amazing! I loved Pureto Rico and had such an amazing time! And I got to ride a ferry from the Palmas side of the island to the natute reserve Vieques and spent 3 days there! Wild horses running in the streets, it was breathtaking
Hey guys… right where you all were at looking at the rudder. I was there in 2020 swimming with the turtles ❤️. Stayed one night on the island spent 11 days in Porto Rico. Enjoy your videos…. Always impressed with Keith’s ability to address all of the issues objectively that you all face on your adventures. From Oklahoma USA 🇺🇸 ❤️
G'day Keith & Renee, your TH-cam channel is honestly, truly better, with more meaningful and honest content, than most shows currently being streamed or aired! Sailing Zatara is by far, the most entertaining and suspenseful "Reality Show;" NOT just on TH-cam, but on any channel or streaming service. Plus, what's most impressive, the filming, cinematography, and editing, are all essentially done by one person, SuperMom, Renee Whitaker...!!! Good onya Renee. Cheers & Blessings from Western Australia 🇦🇺.
Followed you for years. Was at that marina two years ago. I am now in LaPaz, Mexico dealing with same issue on parts. I feel like I have be scammed by DHL and FedEx the last year. In Mexico they require cash to get package. Safe travels. Loved Grenada.
My husband and I live in Anegada, been here over half a century. Maybe someday you all can come our way and we’ll meet somewhere for a drink. Love watching your you tube channel. Safe sailing!
You sure are right about when it rains it pours. Boy! oh boy!, can't catch a break. Fingers crossed it all gets sorted, and then Finn can get back on track to Van life. So excited for the beautiful human he is. Sending a shite load l of good vibes your way always. 🌬⛵️🌏📸🎣⛱️🐚👙🩱🩳🤿🩴🦈🥽🐟🐠🐬🐋🦞🐡☀️🇦🇺
Congrats Z-Crew. My wife and I are excited to hear you're heading to St. Thomas. we've got a trip planned there and St. John in July so we'll be excited to see your coverage!
If you can get a hold of a two-piece of metal sheet big enough to sandwich the rudder (to keep rubber together) and nuts/bolts the sandwich metal sheets end together. If no problem place two screws into the rudder to prevent the two metal sheets from falling down off the rubber. After the dry dock, you can keep the sheet metal for the future in case it happens again similar to this.
Keith, I am in awe of how much you know and how you can continuously fix things on your boat. You're proactive and Johnny-on-the-spot fixer! Very impressive. How do the kids help on the boat? Are you guys thinking about getting a newer boat in the future? Great video. Thank you. ❤
Grrrrr. I hate when that happens! Just remember it could be worse. I just want to tell you that of all the catamarans I have seen, yours is my favorite. I really like your "livingroom" area. It is big enough to hold all of you including the med crew. It is just a homey place. Love your videos.
Good luck you guys. Been watching for years (from Perth Australia) and felt the need to make my first comment and wish you guys all the best. Chin up, you guys are amazing!
Whew! What a journey so far…. I’m with you Renee’. Experienced the residue of the storms here… Lots of work! One thing for sure, you guys allow people to get a good idea of the elements people face in boat life. Very educational and I’m thankful that your man is so knowledgeable and capable of fixing what would otherwise incur more expense to have others fix the engine, sails etc. I know plenty of us are impressed along the way through your sailing journeys. Impressive. How y’all deal with it is also impressive.
Thoroughly enjoy watching you deal with both mundane and less fun obstacles. Discover, evaluate, investigate then overcome! Sailing Zatara is a documentary on how to live a successful life. I would suggest that you teach courses, but you are already doing that. Sail on!
With 12, 300Ah LiFePO4 batteries, you can run your A/C at night without the generator. You are going to love your new batteries, they are a real game changer. Looks like your ensign has seen better days.
Well. Not a good time. Thanks for sharing some of the times that aren’t so good. I still want to go on a journey and have those bumps in the road! Your camera work is just getting better and better. I love your editing as well.
Oh my! You guy’s are definitely having a hard time. Take care of yourself Renee and try and stay positive. You know that eventually everything will be back to normal then it will just be same ole same ole then you will be bored😂. Can’t wait for Jack and Kate to be back it just seems so empty without everyone on board. Just going to wait and see what goes on next week. Praying for you all and safe travels.❤❤❤
Great video, congrats on the Lithium upgrade I have a feeling you are going to love it. Also funny, I'm planning to use an Epoch battery in our 32' monohull! Small world!
Hey there Keith great to see that the new props have been sorted and fitted. Great to see you getting some work done most probably cheaper than a brand new Catarman hey 😊. What is your destination? Still Grenada? Woohoo new batteries for Zatara, where is Jack when you need him 😊. Another great episode there Renee looking forward to further travels, take care and God Bless America 🇺🇸
Oh man boat life really has its ups and downs. As if sailing upwind from the U.S. to Grenada doesn't already come with its own weather and sea state challenges, adding repairs is enough to push anyone over the edge. But, as all of us say "plans are best written in the sand at low tide." Good luck with the fixes, it always gets worse before it gets better, and hopefully one day our paths will cross out there on the salty highway!
Hard times test everyone. Its how you deal with it that shows character and resilience. I have no doubt keith will get it sorted out in time. He is a true fix it man. No worries as they say.
Sending better luck and hugs!!!! Don’t give up, you all got what it takes to keep on keepin on!!!! I think of the rash of house fixes I’ve had recently and also a car that had problem after problem!! You weigh the pros and cons and keep on keeping on !!!! ❤️🥰🙏🏻❤️
Soo sorry for you guys, I know how it sometimes feels when these cascades of problems happen on a boat, in the middle of nowhere... Glad you trust in God to have a perfect plan, even when we would have chosen differently
Keith is right. I would never use my rudders to dock. With twin engines you can thread a needle, just like a track vehicle. Just make sure all rudders are facing forward, and it's all roses.
These are my fav vids! Sailing, road trips, fixing things, upgrades and port interaction and beautiful Renee! Not to mention learn how to speak like Keith...Mondy, Tuesdy and my fav Thursdy! Lol
Wooooooooooo!!! I LOVVVVVVE these waves. This is the best part of sailing. Wind blowing & ridin' the waves! Just checked weather today (6-20-24) for us here in the "plywood" state (FL). Looks like La Niña will be allowing lots more storms to come through (less wind shear) as opposed to an easier time last year with El Niño which blocked incoming storms & turned them north in the Atlantic. Big system coming across low right now down in your neck of the woods instead of up here in FL. Hurricane peak season is mid September so batten down the hatches, here comes summer. 🌀🌊💙
It is like they are in a Bermuda triangle of problems and their boat has been selected and the trouble recipient. Fair winds for getting somewhere to fix the rudder. And I would definitely contemplate getting them both done. Just remember all this bad luck you have been bestowed with.
Totally agree, Keith is a renaissance man. Blows me away the things he fixes, replaces, repairs and installs..
He is the man
I was thinking use some ratchet straps to squeeze it tight. You’ll loose some speed with the drag of the ratchet parts… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
You should probably wear a lifejacket up front in those stormy seas though….or stop struggling and just buy a big power boat….
Wondering - Keith, have you attained the skills you have, just since you started sailing? Or, did you have these skills prior to sailing?
As painful as this is, I do appreciate you guys showing the realities of boat life instead of filling our heads with only visions of sunshine and rainbows.
Frankly, the endless repairs and frustration have put me off going cruising. I once thought it sounded grand, but I don't WANT to spend my days in "exotic places doing boat repairs." Like most people, I am not nearly as knowledgeable as Keith about all of the boats systems, and it would be constant stress to have things break like this.
Your patience and perseverance is truly admirable. So I am promoting you to Admiral Keith Zatara.
If there's a Zombie apocalypse, I want Keith in my camp
No for real lol. I’ve thought the same exact thing before 😂
No kidding on that
Keith is one smart man. They don't make them like him anymore. You are lucky to have him and his knowledge. You couldn't do what you do without him. GOOD JOB KEITH!
My goodness. If anyone thinks that way of life is an escapist's long holiday, this episode certainly shows the reality of the constant problems. What we love most about Mr. Keith is that the projects never end, always more to do and tinker with…true man’s man 🤪😂
Rudder manufacturers defect splitting at edge ? Got any glass on board to fix temporary ?
Thinking about Jack, Kate and the rest of you over the last few days. You are an amazing family with an incredible group of friends and supporters there to help out. Remember to take time for yourselves. 🫶🏻
Have kept them all in my thoughts since the sad news.
Oh my, Keith giving everyone advice if worrying about their dingy falling off. Y'all are great. Always excited to next next adventure.
I’m always in awe of everything that Keith knows how to do! Shout out to y’all from New Braunfels, TX!

Hell, my entire yacht hull is machined from billet aluminum -- it might seem like a waste, but you save on assembly costs.
Keith had that look at the end of the video…Your mind was processing a million ways to solve the problem. Good luck fixing all the issues. Safe travels.Z
Literally, you could sense his mind churning.
Yooo Keith. You have a boat load of money, your near Jeff Bazos category. Quit complaining for gods sake.
It was his Galaxy Mind expanding.
Mr. Keith, your sucking wind big time I would lose some weight for your health and for your families sake.
💯
No bad luck, no bad omen, it’s just a boat. Keith is my hero when it comes to boat maintenance and staying on top of repairs. Yelp it’s just a boat! Good luck on the repair.

Yes, can steer with the motors (I did it quite often). Hope the 'pouring' events stop. Enough is enough! Wishing you better times. Back to enjoying boat life!

Great cabling work, Keith. Clean, precise, consistent. NICE!!!
This is where I WANT to be aboard! Love the problem solving part of boat ownership… HEADS UP KEITH AND CREW!
👍 Being a confident problem solver is a much better way to live than retreating to a “safe” space, hoping in vain for a problem-free life!
Sorry to hear you guys had a bad week. Stay positive, you guys will get through this.
Kudos to all of you ⛵ love seeing even the everyday scenes of being on the water.
Zatara isn't just a sailing family channel it's Keith "Magyver" magical fixer show!
Cool Prop Changing Keith ! Good Man !
As soon as I find out about Epoch batteries I see them going onto Zatara! Hearing really good things about these.
I have to agree with the prop hitting the rudder. It may have cracked the shell and with the rough weather you had, it probably forced water inside, splitting it open more. Hopefully you can get it fixed soon.
I just love you!! Classic music is life! I can work better, think better, and be grateful for life!
That boats now moving faster 😂 lighter batrys makes big differance safe. Trip out there God bless

Fond memories of your restaurant. Is it still for sale?
Praying for yall. Good vibes your way
Greetings from Puerto Rico, it's good to know that you were here again, many blessings
Like the old saying goes the word BOAT means "Break out another Thousand" LOL Good thing Zatara has a lot of good patrons and sponsors.
If you can get a hold of a two-piece of metal sheet big enough to sandwich the rudder (to keep rubber together) and nuts/bolts the sandwich metal sheets end together. If no problem place two screws into the rudder to prevent the two metal sheets from falling down off the rubber. I have a 50 foot sail cat and can appreciate your challenges. I have faced many of the same issues. Best of luck.
😊
You ran from storms and look where you are in the middle of the first storm of the year. Good Luck
Thanks!
Experienced the residue of the storms here…
Lots of work!
I really like how LiFePO4 batteries maintain their voltage until they're almost completely dead.
Well. Not a good time. Thanks for sharing some of the times that aren’t so good. I still want to go on a journey and have those bumps in the road! Your camera work is just getting better and better. I love your editing as well.

It’s fun “watching” boat life. 😊
It’s always something! Love y’all’s attitude though it all! 💕hope to see you soon once we get these davits fixed!
The trials and tribulations of boating, I hope it all comes together smoothly for you! Love the channel!
Great video, congrats on the Lithium upgrade I have a feeling you are going to love it. Also funny, I'm planning to use an Epoch battery in our 32' monohull! Small world!
Wow I don't think that I could handle the storms and huge waves! Btw, my dad was a pilot and I grew with Cessnas and same thing constant maintenance!!
It's a good thing that you finally got the new props installed. Emily may have felt better if she was on deck in the air.
Well done gang, hang in there! (VERY nice tunes, Mr Finn...Is there really any rush to leave?????) God bless all 🤗🤗
Cool to see Finn stepping into Jack's role.
Y’all sure have persevered thru lots of problems and weather. Take care and have a good one! 👍❤️🙏

One word came to mind as a Band-Aid for the rudder, Duct Tape. It sticks to itself, it's waterproof, and they even make boats out of it in ads😂
Is your name Red Green?
Now only if they had 20 rolls on board lol
All the best you guys. Have a good week and thank you for keeping us in the loop on this end. Praying for all of you and your safety.

“undisclosed amount” = BRIBE? lol 😎
To install the props, you must first grease the gears.
That's just how the world works
No one in that car ride back 😂
Keith is right. I would never use my rudders to dock. With twin engines
you can thread a needle, just like a track vehicle. Just make sure all rudders are facing forward, and it's all roses.
