how to fs 180, frontside 180
how to bs 180, backside 180
I've started practicing fs 180 this week, so this video came out just at the right time!
I’ve been struggling with BS 180s for a really long time. Your explanation with staying centered over the board and concentrating on the swing of your back hand for more momentum finally made a difference in my attempts. There is still room for improvement but I landed a few after paying attention to the points mentioned. Thank you!
Love the Mullen level breakdown and analysis.
I'm a firm believer that turning your head is crucial to spinning tricks. Coming short of the full turn is often just not bringing the head around.
Definitely helps 🙌
Gonna try this

Watching this after work waiting for the roads to dry out, eager to put your teachings in use
I think this just unlocked something in my brain. Great video, Sarah!
Edit: Also, your presentation and video composition is really starting to take form. Cool to see
Ah thank you! I’ve been enjoying making this style of video too. If only itd stop raining on the weekends so I could make more 😂 Also, hope it helps!
this is really good stuff. I always dig how introspective you are about this stuff. It really helps get into the crux of what is going on.
This is all good advice, plus look at the way Tyshawn rotates on 180s - he swings his arms in opposite directions to each other - e.g bs 180 his leading arm swings forward and the rear arms swings backwards on the way up.
Also, with fs 180s it really helps to drive the rotation with a "jab" from the hip
Hey)
Beginner skateboarder from Kyiv here)
Nice shirt! :3
Thx for great tips 💙
ah thank you! I love this shirt too 🙏 Welcome to skateboarding!
your tutorials are the only tutorials out there. Most people just say ‘turn your shoulders.’
what you said about the straight forward takeoff, and levelling it out to rotate it, has changed my 180s.
i used to takeoff with my board nearly sideways, and wondered why my centre of mass couldn't follow my board. but now, taking off straight basically fixed that.
thank you.
Here is a tip on how to do this kind of 180s you talking about at 7:36. Imagine that your axis of rotation is under your front truck. It goes like this - pop an Ollie, level out... once the front truck is lower than the back truck, your front one becomes the axis(actually not exactly at this point, but it helps to think about it this way when trying the trick). Turn around this axis kind😊 of like a kickturn but in the air. Roll away. Hope this helps. Keep being stoked ❤
Yeah this year I finally picked up the slack with my rockety rotation tricks, (the half cabs in particular) and I realized it's not one bodypart that does the work. Trying to get it around using just the shoulders or feet ends up messing up the balance at the landing, or even make you lose contact with the board. Arm, shoulders, hips, feet all gotta work and gel together.
Having too much disconnect between the upper and lower body also messes with the tricks because you will miss the initial drag up of the front leg to make the board start rotating. I also noticed pop was a big part of it, and I was too focused on the rotation to give it a good snap.
Great video as always!
Seriously, I tried this out the day after the video dropped. Game changer!!! I have been having issues with my fs 180s, especially while moving. They always felt off, like I had to try too hard. While moving, the board would shoot out from under me. This simple trick, I was landing fs 180s like I did when I was a kid. It was crazy. I felt so natural. Still working on bs. They're not quite there yet. But, I know this tip will help. I feel some fakie big spins in my future!
ahh that's so exciting! Stoked to hear that Shawn 🙌 go get em!
I know this is a older video but I slowed it down where your front side 180 was super clean. Your upper body was already turned before you pop the board. It's hard to tell when we're doing the trick there's a lot going on. I pre twist the opposite side to wind up helps me a lot. Nice video. Skating to me is a journey not a destination. I also enjoy the process of learning tricks👍✌️
That is definitely not just a “you problem!” My bs 180s have looked just like your “pre” ones for years and it’s been driving me crazy. I can’t wait to try these tips you gave in this video, because they make so much sense! Thank you!!
Hope it helps!
Yeah! When I taught myself to 180 on a balance board last year I was getting a much more centered and complete spin when instead of thinking about rotating my shoulders, I imagined reaching through with my hand
I don't really know if this could help someone but i've discovered something about 180 lately or more like i've comprehended something that people have been telling me the whole time trying to get this trick better.
The actual tip that helped me was : the "turn shoulders before you pop", i really felt like i was doing it but by over-exagerating it, i finnally managed to do a solid rotation and also to pop 180 over things.
When i do 180 now i pop only when my shoulders + board are doing a cross ( line 1 : board, line 2 shoulders, the center axis beeing the center of the board) don't know if thats really clear but i aint got no other words to explain it with my current english skills lol. It helped me improve on this trick that has been a battle for so long to me.
I haven't started my BS/FS 180 yet as I want to have a better and consistent ollie before. So good that this video came out before I even try! That's a really good point about "I have hands and arms, too" - maybe it will help me with some other tricks like the "harder" Kickturn in the ramp (always forget which is FS/BS 🙈). The production quality of this video is really top notch! Thank you Sarah!!
ah definitely! Learning how to use your entire body can only help for any rotating trick 😃 And thank you 🙏
I needed this I was practicing bs 180 today and was struggling with the rotation part. A useful tip for fs 180 is to have your front foot’s toes hanging off which helps to keep your feet over the board
sarah, this actually helped a lot, I'm landing my fs 180 perfectly, and working on bs with almost 180 rotation, like, wow, thank you so much for the tips!
ay, stoked to hear it helped! made a massive difference for me too
Keep shredding girl, I used to struggle with my bs 180's too, then I did the nollie pivot thing and it really helped. Also I like to picture myself landing in the direction I want to be riding when rolling up to the trick
Sarah, I commented on your video about throwing arms back and up while jumping a few weeks ago. Practicing that technique, and applying it to 180s, I've kind of just naturally run into a lot of the things you're saying here, but there's definitely a few details that I'm missing that you touched on in this video. I'm absolutely loving the explanations here.
As someone who started skating at the age of 24, after not really being athletic all my life, there's a lot of unique challenges that most skaters don't experience and thus are not very helpful on. You've really helped bridge that gap for me and I'm sure many others. Your channel, Norman Woods, and whythetrick, and a few others I'm blanking on, are invaluable for people like me who don't respond well to advice from good skaters like "jump higher" "flick harder" etc. My question is always "HOW do I do that though?". And the answer to those questions is something you explore in depth on your channel, so thank you for that
Ah, I'm really happy to hear that. This channel basically came from that exact question. I also picked up skating at 25 and kept finding myself asking "But how do I get myself to do that?" after a tutorial. And thus...started sharing whatever I discovered. And, I actually love diving deep and exploring the "why." So, I've been having a lot of fun making these recent explorations! Happy to hear you've liked them
Really have been struggling with my BS 180- spent a decent amount of time yesterday practicing without much success. Perfect timing! Thank you for your insights and your efforts in making this video.
they've been my nemesis always, so I really feel for you 😭 at least, I'm starting to get the rotation haha edit: and of course I hope you do too!
One thing that many people miss is the flick. This is frontside OLLIE so you should pop, flick and rotate. Rotation gets much easier when you flick and get your front foot in the pocket😊
Yep. When I'm feeling good and popping my ollies high, the 180s just kinda happen. You can't rotate the board if your front foot is not in the pocket to direct it.
Nice tips thanks this video is very useful. I'm trying to fix my lipslide and tailslide because it's still lacking in 180s
They’re looking good Sarah
I wanted to finish the backside180 with the power of the front foot spinning the board in the air instead of the back foot, but it was hard, and the backside tailslide was as hard as this one, but it was the grind method of my dreams. Your amazing content which brought a lot of thoughts. Anyway, thank you!
thank you! I'm happy to hear that 😃
Ive achieved a "nice" fs180 by focus on a Quick waist movement. Instead OF throwing myself back with lots OF momentum and turn as a solid block, i jump almost as on an Ollie with a little inertia From THE shoulders and as soon im on THE Air i turn my waist (like snowboarders do) and moving my rear leg yo THE Front. THE result Is a more elastic, Quick but relaxed movement.
I love how you break things down, Its a great help. Thanks
Merci pour tes conseils que je n’avais vu dans aucune autre vidéo. J’ai essayé cette après-midi, le 180fs est passé FIRST TRY !!!
Merci !
FIRST TRY? c'est incroyable! 💪💪 Stoked!
The bs tip with the back arm leading is mad. No one else talks about that. This helps with bs 50-50s and other tricks 😮 thanks!
Seriously. That alone helped me so much 😭
Loves it-thx for these tips🔥💯
You look cool as hell in that black hoodie/hat/gloves combo
to lead bs 180 with the back shoulder is pure money for me, thank you very much
For backside, it might help to have your front foot further over the board toe side before you pop. It seems counter intuitive but you need to be able to start turning slightly backside as you begin to pop. Also helps maintain position over board and keep it to your feet as you start to go faster and pop higher with them.
makes so much sense, will take this idea to the streets, can´t wait, thx
You already have a lot of great videos, but this is one of the most informative a d helpful but maybe I'm biased because I'm working on 180s right now, I thought the 180 where you asked how it looked looked clean, keep it up, definitely my favorite learn to skate videos even though thankfully your getting a lot of good competition in that from a bunch more people recently no one before or since with the level of detail, thanks for all the great work!
Definitely going to try and implement all this. My 180s have always been pretty bad - I can (even over) rotate em, landing on the nose and rolling away smooth. But every time I actually try to pop it higher, I lose control/don't fully rotate. The 'holding on' to the pop part especially sounds very sensible, as does throwing your hands back. Cheers!
ah, let me know if anything actually helps!
Man, this just shows me that I needed to hear this help from a woman… to help me understand from a women’s center or axis.
Heyyy so i've been watching your videos for a while now and i love how you break things down - I've learned a ton from you :)
I'm relatively new myself and have been finding these little tricks kind of in sync with the timing of when you drop these videos ahah, so thats been quite interesting. But anyways!! I got a tip that I wanna share that has helped getting my 180s feeling and looking a lot nicer recently :)
The idea is to POP in the BACKWARDS direction (sort of like your tip recently for ollies). Popping in that backwards direction while at the same time leading properly my hands and shoulders has made it so the board stays more in line with me and I've been able to travel wayy less forwards or backwards. Additionally its helped with leveling out my 180s (especially my BS 180s) which is something that I could never quite figure out. So yea try keeping that in mind a little bit more in your 180s and hopefully this trick helps you out a little as well!
Hi Gabriel! I'm stoked you've gotten a lot from the channel and are getting those 180s! I'll definitely keep that in mind next time. I've tested out the backwards pop in my FS 180s with some luck, but I haven't remembered to focus on that during my BS 180s yet. Hopefully this comment will come to mind next time I try them! 🙏
I love your grip job!
Also, great analytical breakdown!
The self-discovery of these applications here is brilliant, and it's great to pass this knowledge forward!
ah thank you! I'm obsessed with gripping like this right now 😂 And also stoked to hear that!
@@SarahParkMatott Keep killin' it!
(Pstttt, do a grip tut. sometime lol, fr)
Love these trick tip vids so much, very helpful
I am really happy that I've found this video! Very eye opening. I gotta use your advices on my next backside 180 tries :D Thank you!
You're awesome the way you explain things just makes so much sense to me
Great trick breakdown! Back side 180 were so hard for me to learn. I’m going to try some of your tips to see how it helps.
ah, let me know if any do!
Good analysis on rotation and timing.
Combination of upper body and the legs ( pop )
Good review 💪💪
I think practicing 180 ollie's over something like a piece of wood can help with achieving the satisfying result that were looking for .
You’re making me wanna go skate lol. My BS are still super weak when it comes to rotation but I can definitely get them…..sometimes lol
Go skate Phil!! 🙌🙌 my bs rotations are getting much better doing this, though I’m not popping at the moment. Still just drilling that full rotation 😃
Big change in the look of your fs 180! Will try using that armswing (maybe also ,in a diminished way ,for no complys? 🤔)
right?? I think it made a really big difference. Thanks Lars! Let me know if it helps you get a better rotation for no complies too 😃
I’ve been struggling with under rotation (160 degree at most) and I implemented the hand and arm thing u said and it worked! Great video definitely! Landed my full rotated fs180 today, but still struggling with the “shifting weight to front foot” problem, maybe its becoz my fs180 is rocket?
congrats getting that full rotating! 🙌 and, I'm sure you'll keep getting better as you keep learning and adjusting the little details
Bruh tysm this was what i was looking for😊
2:00 I think you'd benefit from basic parkour practice. It makes you very aware of what your limbs are doing, and how to use them to create rotations while in the air. Stuff like 360 precisions and some vaults, not really flips.
Who makes these beige drawstring pants? They look super comfy and good for skating. I have struggled to find pants with a waist that fits without a belt but also roomy in the legs.
ah! I actually stumbled upon these at a target in the mens section. I walked by and immediately was like "those...look like good skate pants" 😄
I think the my biggest problem is rotating out than up. I like to think of jumping like Mario and gently swing up and reaching where my opposite arm align and my opposite arm does the opposite. If we wind up our upper torso while keep our hips in place and then jump, our body will naturally unwind.
Ahh that’s an awesome analogy 🙌🙌 I’ll think about that too next time
Overthinking is a tough one. Lately I've decided to simply stop thinking when riding and focus only on sense and feel. If a thought enters my head, I get off the board. I reserve my thinking brain for the moments when I'm not riding. I'm not sure if it has led to direct improvements, but it has made my sessions less frustrating.
This is really helpful🙏
My silly thought process for FS 180 (since I can't BS 180) was thinking of pivoting 90° on the take off, doing and ollie perpendicular to my initial direction, and inertia would continue the turn the extra 90°
Yeah, I think that was more my understanding too before. Go to 90 and let the momentum take me haha I still do that for my BS 180s. I think it helps me get a feel for that full rotation. The little sliding ones. They are also fun for me too 😃
@@SarahParkMatott Look, you've got a spam bot!
I use my arms for momentum a lot almost like swinging a bat
Greetings from Kyiv! Nice t-shirt;)
Great info
With frontside 180s i always seem to land with all my weight on my front foot, and leaning over the nose.. anyone had this problem and have any advice for landing more squarely?
thanks
I think the problem you're having when trying to use just your shoulders is that your shoulder is never ahead of your lower body in its rotation. You wind up- putting your shoulders behind the rotation- and then as you unwind, you start rotating everything. But your lead shoulder doesn't make it past your hip. It's really not too complicated- the upper body, generally, should start rotating before the pop and jump, so the lower body can follow more easily. I'm watching some of the pros 180 now, and that's how they do it. When i do back 180s, i pretty much look at my back foot's toes, pop and then the rest happens almost automatically.
I was thinking the same thing. . I hope nobody is just randomly waking by thinking you need meds 😅
😂😂
12:32 cleannn
So insightgul
Soo good ❤
so you mean, we can do bs/fs 180 without even popping the board to the side ? Just using friction and swing ? Hmm, I'll try it
yeah, you can use the momentum. It's how some skaters can fs/bs 180 entirely in place--when you're REALLY good at it
Watch Kilian Martin. He Dances on his board like Flamenco.
Killian is fun to watch 💯
Towards, the end, of this video, I think, that you are, where you need, to be, for more improvement !
Don't forget you will be riding on the opposite stance when you land.
It’s so weird seeing van dyck in my recommended
haha is it? 😂
strugglin with same shitte
God i hate backside 180
The frontside 180's slightly cooler brother
oh using the hands is areallygood tip, I just realized I dod that for fS 180s but not for BS and that might be why Iḿ always underrotating!
It was definitely worse for my BS 180s too. And has helped a lot😃 hope it helps you too
your videos are so helpful, dropped a sub
Dude, I somehow unsubscribed too your page Wtf. That’s TH-cams fault I swear. Thank you so much for all your help. I finally got a FS180. Just took 3 years 😂. Really appreciate you sister💯🫡. Also, for gym purposes- being I am a boxer at the end of the day and, coach full time therefore cannot break a wrist (unless it’s in the ring)…I would do a guap of eccentric work like depth jumps to help land. I always used to think going up was the most important part; nah, other way around. It’s a lot like a snatch, just w a pistol instead of a squat. Yes you can do it.
Ay, congratulations on the fs 180. Im still 3 years and going for the bs one 😂 I don’t do any depth squats. But, I do a weighted jump, focused on that. The absorption 💯 think it’s important and ignored. I mean, fitness in general is largely ignored in skating (at least as far as I could find or until very recently with a few physical therapists making skate content)
