!important! My thoughts below on some things I'm rather uncertain on. This was a tough one, two new voices of which I am both uncertain on. Curze I might modify for future videos a bit but is generally fine but I must admit I struggle when it comes to Vulcan. Whilst modern day earth ethnicities and cultures don't track 1:1 with 40k there is still very clear inspiration, inspiration that was clearer with the Salamanders prior to the nocturne recons. I want to be able to portray the depth he has and the joviality, whilst also, keeping him sounding distinct. And, as a very white guy from England there is obvious baggage with certain accents, and the last thing I want to do is cause a level of offence or insult. I have clear inspiration from the tts voice but I don't want to portray it as a comedy, but jovial and comical is a fine line. I'll likely try and modify the Vulcan voice too based on the feedback I get, so, any and all is worthwhile! In the meantime, I, hope you enjoyed it in this smaller test video at least! My thanks for watching, do all the usual TH-cam things if you wish, it does help the channel greatly! Thanks again!
Love the narration and story as always, the accent im not so sure about tbh. Are you going to do a Welsh accent for Dorn, a nord for Russ, can you do a mongol accent for the Khan ? Dont get me wrong, was a good Caribbean accent but i dunno, might just be a bit too much, especially when contrasting with a self narration that is different, i think your normal voice is better if you are reading it in such a way, not as a 3rd party narrator
@@morgs456 I do tend to try and affect accents for different characters, indeed! I would certainly attempt something rather Nordic for Russ, I am not sure about the Khan as I am fairly certain I just can't manage an accent that would be up to a standard I deem acceptable though, if possible it's not off the table. Similarly, I did utilise a German accent for one of the characters in a VtM video and, in my inspiration from Sean Bean, gave Ned Stark a more Yorkshire accent in a Game of Thrones video. I do get your meaning, however and the switch between character voice and narration, especially interior monologues seems like it was jarring for some for sure. I would like to record more Vulkan but I may need to, if nothing else, work on a sort of softening at least so it is all more relatively similar across a singular recording. My thanks for watching.
I'll say I was a bit taken aback when I heard your Vulkan voice as that isn't how I imagine him, but I don't think there's anything wrong with you doing that voice. For sure! Most 40k fans seem to be agree that whilst Vulkan and the Salamanders have pitch black skin regardless of what part of Terra their ancestors came from, Vulkan himself is black, which is a broad group. All the artwork lends itself to this too. So I think it's right that he should have the depth and tonality of a "black voice" so that he's distinct. I'd never heard or even thought of him as Jamaican before as I'd never seen much TTS, but there's no reason it can't work if you get it right. It's not farfetched that some of Vulkan's sons would look almost identical to him and share a similar tonality of voice. regardless of whether they're Terran or Nocturnian. Try picking up a sledgehammer. Or a vacuum cleaner, or broom, or any other long pole weighted at one end. Now, hold it by the end as far from the weight as you can, and try to do a one handed uppercut with it, the same as Vulkan does. Then remember, Dawnbringer takes three Astartes to lift it. And Vulkan's opening move is to chin Curze with an upswing that the Night Haunter couldn't dodge. By the Emperor, Vulkan is built.
The scene that I have playing through my head is as follows - Vulkan says "It is also a hammer..." Kurze's eyes widen then the video flips back to Vulkan and freezes mid-swing and you hear the 'Curb Your Enthusiam' ending theme play. th-cam.com/video/CdqMZ_s7Y6k/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for the feedback! I am still rather uncertain about, well, both of the voices in this video but I do plan on modifying as I go along. I shall take the thoughts on board!
Haha, thank you! I am very glad! I was uncertain about both of the voices here and Curze hasn't been mentioned quite as much so that means a lot! My thanks for watching!
I dont care what anyone says even if GW denies it themselves, the Nocturne accent sounds like a thick Barbados accent and no one can tell me otherwise. If Horus can speak with a Texas/Western twang than Vulkan can talk like Barbados Slim.😊
I liked this. Well done. However, I feel "It's also a hammer." Should be said in a way to convey that vulkan is exerting himself. it's AL(hammer drawn back)so a h(swing and connect)AMMER. My reading of this scene is that Vulkan is swinging as he's replying. Again, great work. I enjoyed it. Well done!
Also, it would be appreciated if you listed where excerpts came from. Helps ro both support official sources if we care and to see broader context if we care.
For the source, at least in the longform videos like this the title of the book it is from is at the start of the title (and in the description, for the times I remember to properly edit it) Thanks for watching!
I appreciate the TTS inspiration but that is a parody intended to be silly. I don't think the Jamaican accent fits in the more serious context of the actual lore. A lot of people seem to forget the Salamanders are literally black skinned, not real life ethnically black, and it's due to radiation from their planet not based on a real ethnic culture like the Celestial Lions chapter. Vulkan and nocturne people are blacksmiths which I would tend to associate more with europe. I actually think Vulkan would not really have any significant accent but his voice should be quite deep and calm due to his size and temperament. Just my two cents. I think you nailed curze though, sounded exactly how I imagined it. Nice Work!
They used to be more inspired modernly 'ethnically black' (as flawed as the terms might be, even now, no matter in 40k years time) I believe prior to the GW changes to the Salamanders and their home planet. Blacksmithing itself is not strictly European, the best guess we have is that it emerged first in Anatolia, but there is evidence to suggest Africa has had blacksmiths for just as long as that. I imagine though, if one doesn't include the old pre-retcon Salamander aesthetics Greek would likely be the closest for Vulkan, thanks to the name. That being said, I do plan on modifying the voice slightly (as I do with most of the Primarchs I have attempted) and the feedback is always worthwhile! So, my thanks! and, my thanks for watching!
There isn't really a specific voice for Vulcan, though I do admit I rather like the TTS take, but it was a bit too comical for what I needed so I tried to tone it down a tad. The Salamanders now in the lore I believe can be basically any (21st century) Ethnicity after the nocturne retcons but that doesn't mean Vulcan can't still be portrayed as black either. (Though that being said I was still uncertain, with the baggage that comes with me using an afro-jamaican accent)
Really liked your general performance and style of delivery❤ though i personally have never really liked people using the TTS style voice for Vulkan outside of TTS or other memes as I’ve always felt it takes the piss out of a character that I’m very fond of and whom isn’t really a comic relief. (not to mention there being no real ties that I’m aware of culturally between Nocturne and Jamaica of all places and it kinda feels like that was selected for him by fans because of his skin color)
It’s worth noting that i liked your version of the voice a lot more then most people’s versions because it feels like you’re at least trying to make it feel like Vulkan and not a random silly happy Jamaican man
I do absolutely agree! This was essentially my test video for a variant of the voice but I did certainly expect a... varied degree of comments but this feels like one of the fairest takes yet. I did certainly want to try and cut out a bit of the comedic angle that the TTS take normally has but I acknowledge the baggage that comes along with it, too. It's sort of a lose-lose situation thanks to the old GW lore retcons. That being said I just want to be able to portray Vulkan as the badass he is, whilst still maintaining some of that more jovial personality that he has, ever the friendliest Primarch! So feedback like this does help a lot! Thanks for watching!
I am uncertain about it just through misgivings of me, in particular, affecting that as the voice for Vulkan. Why is it that you don't quite like it? The feedback is useful! and, my thanks for watching!
@@danielquintonvo tbh, in the back of my mind he has dred locks now lol. But Micheal Duncan is kinda the ball park I think of when I think of Vulcans voice. But you know, this is just my head cannon besically, I like your work man so do what you think works. Just tossing my 2 cents in the hat is all.
The accent and voice for Vulcan are very well done, but I think it might be too heavy. In isolation it’s fine, but the contrast between Vulcan’s voice and his internal dialogue was kinda jarring.
I think I do agree, which is why I chose a fairly short excerpt to attempt it first and I will likely try and tone it down, or shift it, for any further Vulcan parts I do. Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching!
Vulcan isn't, black or african. That voice...wtf were you thinking. He's appearances isn't one of racial association. It's an outter physical alteration like Magnus and Sanguineous. Think more like a guy who is genetically tied the emperor who has black skin and red eyes and above all of this isn't in anyway tied to Africa. So yeah, wtf!
Vulkan and many of the Salamanders used to be more conventionally black prior to the GW lore shift but I do concede that yes, they are now no longer strictly 'black', in a 21st century sense of the word. May I ask why this accent for Vulkan is unacceptable for you but a British accent for the other Primarchs isn't an issue? None of them are British, Britain no longer exists in the 41st millenium.
A gruff "english" when in english. As where can't be sure where it's coming from just the language is spoken. But african is like doing stereotypically Jamaican, french or cockney. Spectrum accents. All of which fall apart only having small to no hints remaining the more precise and practiced one becomes talking in a state of advanced clarity to a language like english. English is very dry language not promoting any actual accents, habit of speaking it in a way, is the accent. The use of strong accents on any primarchs isn't a good way to portray them. Much so when ever mentioning the mass of intellect they wield.
The primarchs do have different accents though, obviously, they all grew up on different planets entirely Some variation in speech Is so much more interesting than boring ass Dorn style dead pan delivery for every primarch
Lore: Primarchs are unrivalled tacticians who have minds that are to a human mind what a human mind is to a bacteria Kurze: Forgets Vulkans Hammer can be used to beat him
@@danielquintonvo Okay first of all Vulcan is not black/brown or whatever we perceive as from todays view but Ashen hence the fire and stuff. Second Warhammer 40k while yes Holy Terra share that with the real world is set 40 thousand years in the future. Even going back futher to the unification wars or dark age of technology it's super unlikely a small cultural heritage such as Jamacian would survive to that time. and third Vulcan was a lab grown super being but raised far far off in the galaxy away from Terra with even less chances of such a niche heritage to even exist or survive. I know the Orcs sounds like british holigans and other media in future setting portray for example chinese as an integrated part of the langue, hell even Star Trek TNG with french. That said it is way way more likely. Also it kinda makes Vulcan sound like a joke character that's not serious and despite all the memes with the salamanders Vulcan is indeed very serious and one of the few characters that does not vain from his principles. Hope that helps or was constructive enough.
@@Mordikay211and yet, none of that would really effect the accent of his speech Why are people so averse to the concept of a primarch not having the exact same voices The primarchs all grew up on different planets, with entirely different environments, traditions, and cultures, why should accents be excluded? This will be my head cannon voice of Vulkan. I love how in character it is. 😁
2:06 a moment where a hammer truly becomes a hammer
So like ratchet straps
"that's not goin anywhere"
For a universe that coined the term “Grimdark”, I love how the writers can bring some great levity to scenes without ever bringing the momentum to a halt.
That's got to be the best one-liner in all of 30k.
😂 Vulkan’s inner dialogue has a different accent lol
My favorite Vulkan moment
Thank you for keeping the jamaican accent on Vulkan
CORRRRVUUUUUUS - i want a krumpen hug!
Both of their voices sound so good
Dont suppose you are planning to do a a voiceover of garro vs the lord of flies from flight of eisenstein? The combat description from that was phenomenal.
Keep up the good work!
I could do, I do rather like Garro!
I shall add it to the list!
and, thank you very much for watching!
@@danielquintonvo so are you trying to get into doing this professionally then or is this just a hobby? I mean your quality is high enough you could pass for a pro, youre better than some of the audible narrators ive heard.
@@monkeyskitz at the moment it's just a hobby, I'd love to do this professionally but that's a hard industry to break into!
And, my thanks again! That does all mean a lot to me!
@@danielquintonvo i only ask because ive often fantasised about getting into voice acting but never actually tried it, and you can blame keith szarabajka for that xD it would be cool if you could do some video game work for little indy devs and work your way up from there, youve already got a hell of a portfolio lol
It was at that moment- Kurze knew he furked up
Try picking up a sledgehammer.
The scene that I have playing through my head is as follows - Vulkan says "It is also a hammer..."
Kurze's eyes widen then the video flips back to Vulkan and freezes mid-swing and you hear the 'Curb Your Enthusiam' ending theme play. th-cam.com/video/CdqMZ_s7Y6k/w-d-xo.html
Love the night haunter
Vulkan of the Caribbean.
"You forget one ting, brudda. It is also a hammah!"
my favorite part in the entire Horus Heresy series
BOMBOCLAT HAMMER
- Vulkan probably
Vulkan gave Curze but a single boop on his noggin
I love your voice overs, and get the TTS reference, but I miss the baritone, thoughtful voice i'd become used to.
Thank you for the feedback! I am still rather uncertain about, well, both of the voices in this video but I do plan on modifying as I go along. I chose this excerpt so I could do something a bit shorter as the first Vulkan excerpt, with a bit of comedy to it to keep the Vulkan joviality.
and, my thanks for watching! I shall take the thoughts on board!
Vulkan will always sound like James Earl Jones in my head
Coolest moment of the Heresy.
Man, your impersonation of Konrad was PERFECT! It's edgy, raspy enough, and so loathsome you want to punch him in his dirty teeth.
What a great miscalculation to be trapped in a room with a man wielding a teleportation device, although disabled, resembles a hammer. 😂
Would you ever consider doing the confrontation between Daemon Lorgar and warp-empowered Corvus
Absolutely! I have plans to get to each of the primarchs and legions, and that is a fantastic excerpt so it shall go on the list!
Thanks for watching!
Well done!
This was the moment Vulkan became the Warhammer 40,000
I love accent man. Well done 👏
Most one sided beating
Also, it would be appreciated if you listed where excerpts came from. Helps ro both support official sources if we care and to see broader context if we care.
For the source, at least in the longform videos like this the title of the book it is from is at the start of the title (and in the description, for the times I remember to properly edit it)
Thanks for watching!
VULKAN LIVES!
"It be a hammer mon."
VULKAN LIVES
That’s what Vulcan sounds like?
No, he’s just using the same Jamaican accent the TTS guys gave him. Vulcan and the Salamanders aren’t actually black.
@@danielquintonvo he sounds like he’s about to tell a pirate crew that they need to sail to the ends of the earth and beyond to save Jack Sparrow
@@TheSaxualHealerdoesn’t mean they can’t have accents
@@averyangrycrow4936 Ok? I never said they couldn’t. I just pointed out that the Salamanders aren’t Jamaican black guys in canon.
Thanks for watching!
accent for Vulcan is good, only thing thats off is that i'd expect it to be deeper
mhm, I don't think I can quite reach Vulkan's range without voice effects! Which, I may attempt, see if I can naturally do it.
Thanks for watching!
What book is this from?
This is from Vulkan Lives
My thanks for watching
Can you do a video of Vulkan telling Curze exactly what he thinks of him?
Homerun for Vulkan!
Nof sure i love the jamacan vulkan.
I Love it.
😆 Vulkan is from Kingston now?
The accent and voice for Vulcan are very well done, but I think it might be too heavy.
In isolation it’s fine, but the contrast between Vulcan’s voice and his internal dialogue was kinda jarring.
I think I do agree, which is why I chose a fairly short excerpt to attempt it first and I will likely try and tone it down, or shift it, for any further Vulcan parts I do.
Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching!
Hermes Conrad had a secret last name, it was....Vulcan
There's no fuckin' way he pulled out the TTS Vulcan😂
Yeeeeeuuusasss
Why is he from the islands? 😂😂😂😂
Vulkan with a Jamaican accent... that is certainly a choice.
It’s also a hammer 😂
Is that a Jamaican accent?
Why do people voice Vulkan as if he was Jamaican or Haitian?
See the pinned comment.
and, my thanks for watching.
Not sure how i feel about Jamaican Vulken.
fkn hell jamaican vulcan just takes me out of it lmao
The primarchs do have different accents though, obviously, they all grew up on different planets entirely
Some variation in speech Is so much more interesting than boring ass Dorn style dead pan delivery for every primarch
👍👍!!!
Lore: Primarchs are unrivalled tacticians who have minds that are to a human mind what a human mind is to a bacteria
Kurze: Forgets Vulkans Hammer can be used to beat him
Good work but i don't know. I just didn't felt that that voice is good for Vulkan. I imagine it to be more like Thanos voice.
Why is Vulkan Jamaican?
Why is Vulcan Jamaican?
The Jamaican accent really hurt this. Don't do that....
Disagree, I think it fits Vulkan very well. It’s not as if he’s mocking Jamaicans by using the accent.
Wait so Vulcan is from Jamaica? Yeah don't love that and also makes no sense.
May I ask why? The voice is an uncertain point for me still so I'd like to take any feedback on board.
My thanks for watching, still
@@danielquintonvo Okay first of all Vulcan is not black/brown or whatever we perceive as from todays view but Ashen hence the fire and stuff.
@@Mordikay211and yet, none of that would really effect the accent of his speech
Why are people so averse to the concept of a primarch not having the exact same voices
The primarchs all grew up on different planets, with entirely different environments, traditions, and cultures, why should accents be excluded?
For all we know, the accent here may well just be the accent from the part of nocturne vulkan grew up in
