Any time you can catch him live you will find that he is better than studio recordings. He gets energized by the audience and the others in his group(my theory). The fact that he doesn't need technology to enhance his voice or performance is his secret. He is a throwback to the "old timey" performers who just had loads of talent.

    That wasn't a backup singer, that was his wife of many years Morgane. Chris had been in music for many, many years as a song writer, backup singer and guitarist before his wife convinced him to give solo a try. She would go on stage with him to help him get over his stage fright. You can see the love in their eyes throughout the performance. Chris doesn't do regular music videos. His label kept asking so he agreed on some non-negotiable conditions. He would pick the message and write the song. He would have say in the direction and production of the video and that he would not appear in the video singing. A lot of the message is in the video itself and would be better understood without too many pauses. You can always go back after the video to add your analysis. Love your reactions and keep them coming. {Don't know how you haven't discovered Chris Stapleton, live, before now.}

Great reaction and analysis. Chris Stapleton is generally better live so pick his live performances over his studio versions whenever possible. The lady singing with him is his wife, Morgane. She frequently performs with him and is an amazing singer in her own right. He didn't actually start out as a singer but limited himself to songwriting. He has written and co-written over 170 songs, among them six number-one country songs, earning him nine ASCAP Country awards, including the Vanguard Award. His songs have been recorded by some of music's biggest stars, including Adele, Brad Paisley, and Dierks Bentley. He has co-written songs with Vince Gill, Peter Frampton, Sheryl Crow, and Ed Sheeran, to name a few. He also wrote some songs for feature films, which are included on their respective soundtracks.
In 2007, Chris Stapleton started as the frontman for the bluegrass band The SteelDrivers, which is how I first learned of him. In 2010, he started a Southern Rock band called The Jompson Brothers. In 2013 he started his solo career after being signed by Mercury Nashville. He surprisingly did not become an overnight success. However, He eventually did become well-known and has been unstoppable ever since. He has received numerous awards and nominations. He is the recipient of five Grammys, seven Academy of Country Music Awards, ten Country Music Association Awards, five Billboard Music Awards, two iHeartRadio Music Awards, and some others.
I would recommend his live performances of Sometimes I Cry at the Binge Lounge, his Austin City Limits performance of I was Wrong, his impromptu cover of James Brown's It's A Man's World, his tribute performances to Prince and Aretha Franklin, any other live performance, as well as his music video "Fire Away." Be forewarned; the last one is a tear-jerker, no matter how tough you are.

If you liked this one you ought to check out Chris Kläffords version of it, just for comparison ;)
Second, since it's christmas time you just HAVE to react to the swedish band Sabatons "Christmas Truce", the song is about the spontaneous christmas truce 1914 during the first year of WWI where the german and british/french soldiers for one day stopped shooting, came out of the trenches and celebrated christmas together. It's a song filled with both beauty and sadness and, imo, one of the best songs to celebrate the Spirit of Christmas released in a long time.

Julia had me dialed in, as always, with the analysis... but the "bloopers" at the end made me snort laugh quite unexpectedly. Me staying Classy. Thanks for the review. Chris and Morgane's NPR Tiny Desk concert shows how connected they are vocally... she's always looking at him and he's singing to her. But then on Death Row (which I believe was sampled into your transition to the bloopers) he sings alone, which is completely fitting, as a man in a dark cell all alone with just his thoughts.

The back up singer is Morgan his wife they’ve been married since 2007. They have a handful of children.
They have been singing together for a long time.

Also I am not a singer, but I do love singer reaction videos like this. Every one that I've watched (that was a professional singer at least) all mention what you said about the "Dirty Gliss" have mentioned the forward placement of the breath and the how he pulls back like that. so so cool.

That’s a killer performance! I’d love to see Julia react to “More of You” from Tiny Desk because you get the full picture of his voice with his just him, Morgane, and his guitar.

Chris is awesome. I crash at his song ´Fire Away´. He made that and even made a video, whcih he normally doesn´t do, to create awareness to mental issues. I would love to see you react to the video version. Protip! don´t wear eye make-up while watching it coz it will run, i promiss. Great reactions, thanks for that.

Loving this reaction and the breakdown. Between you and T.C.V. I wonder how many singers would have cameras stuck down their throats? 🤔😄 Any chance the two of you could come up with a list of the studies you would like to see done? Maybe we here online can help you come up with the people and money to do them.

Great analysis and insight on this performance, Julia! I especially enjoy Chris's guitar playing in this performance: not flashy, but very musical. If you like a great bluesy performance, and I know you do, you really need to listen to Shoshana Bean singing Make It Rain at The Theater At Ace Hotel. Remember when you heard Haley Reinhart singing Creep? It's like that.

Holy hell that was an explanation on husk. It got me thinking though about vocal fatigue, is that similar and is there ways to speed up recovery time from it/combat against it before it happens? I'd love an explanation or video on that if possible.

Certain models of electric guitar are also said to have “twang”. Most typically, the Fender Telecaster is said to have twang, for the same reasons Julia describes here.

would love to see you react to more country music there are a lot of great vocalistin country that a lot of people in other countries don't get to see because it's more of an American music genre

I’m sure it’s already been mentioned, but the backup singer is his wife, Morgane. She’s the one who encouraged him to start a solo career.

One of the true originals with twang and distortion was of course Wanda Jackson. She rocked country and
Rock and Roll back in the early 50s. A true pioneer in every sense of the word.

I've never been a fan of country music. Chris has disabused of this notion. He is the bomb diggity. Julia is the bomb diggity of vocal analysis. 'nuff said.
