David Allan Coe was the first to record the song in 1981. Two years later, “Tennessee Whiskey” was a hit for the late, great George Jones. Over two decades later, Stapleton put his stamp on the classic by infusing elements of soul and R&B into his country roots.
If you guys like this then you would like "Human" by rag and Bone Man, and "Way Down We Go" by Kaleo.

Coe and Co. took the Etta James “I’d Rather Go Blind” song and basically wrote new lyrics to it and tweeted a few other elements, but prior to Chris doing Tennessee Whiskey, I do t think the prior versions had the same kind of cry, wail and raw emotion to the way Etta James sung it. My guess is Chris knew the roots of it all.

The whole song is about a guy who turns the alcohol because of being lonely and finally meeting a woman that replaces bad alcohol in his life. So he's saying to the woman that she's just as smooth as Tennessee whiskey, just as sweet as strawberry wine, and as warm as a glass of Brandy. He's also telling her that her love stopped him from reaching for the bottle.

He took the words of Tennessee Whiskey made popular in the 80s by George Jones/David Alan Coe, but changed the melody to Etta James I’d Rather Go Blind. So, this version is originally his.

Chris Stapleton 'Sometimes I Cry' live... Insanely soulful. Another artist with soul is Teddy Swims. His cover of Mario's 'Let Me Love You' is also amazing.
And Chris Stapleton is a song writer. This is his song. He writes for many other artists.

This is NOT Chris Stapleton's song (although I think he COMPLETELY OWNS it now). It was originally sung by David Allen Coe and made famous by legendary country singer George Jones.

If you like this you’re definitely going to like “I was wrong” and “ sometimes I cry”. Chris is an amazing artist. This one is definitely not country, more soul or blues, just like you described it.

When an artist can evoke emotion from you. That is the essence of great music. Guys like Chris Stapleton, Luke Combs, Travis Tritt may be country, but they have this way of connecting to what they perform that makes it feel real. Check out Beautifull Crazy by Luke Combs. I believe you will like it.

I just watched your reaction to Tennessee Whiskey and loved it, really liked seeing how much Ms Lex enjoyed it. I wrote y'all before about reacting to some Rock, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised, try Thunderstruck by AC/DC. Also Chris Stapleton's Sometimes I Cry', or 'I was Wrong'. I really do enjoy your reactions, keep it up. A Fan!

This is a cover, Dean Dillon wrote the song along with Linda Hargrove... the original recording was done by David Allen Coe in 1981, then recorded by George Jones in 1983.. Chris Stapleton recorded it in 2015 with a blues touch... The woman that is singing is his wife Morgane who was 8 months pregnant with their twin boys.
