I get off the stage and saw Pat and said hello etc. I used to sit and watch those guitar lessons as well. Pat says “ I really like those ostinato figures you’re playing “ I thanked him but didn’t know what he meant haha. Must’ve seen him six times in Philly at these tiny clubs either with his trio or quartet. Awesome performances !!! I saw Joey play in Vienna at Joe Zawinul’s club years ago and he blew me away !!! We talked for a bit after his last show and communicated on FB when he posted songs on organ, trumpet and sax. Bomaye ❤
@@55baltimoreboy In most cases, bass and drums are back-up, rhythm track instruments for the melodic ones. People listen to music for the melody, harmony, arrangement, or the vocal interpretation. It is mostly bass and drums students/players that believe their instruments are pivotal at the expense of the more important ones. However, it is possible for electric bass players to provide solos approaching those of melodic instruments, especially on a six-string. Jaco Pastorius started that trend. There are very few acoustic bass players that can provide an intonationally flawless solo because that instrument is much harder to keep in tune.
Because I respect Pat Martino’s genius, I am making attempts to pass on his “Symmetrical Parental Forms”. Both the Augmented triad (1-3-#5) and the Diminished 7th chord (1-b3-b5-bb7) are “symmetrical” in that the notes are equidistant; in the Augmented triad, they are a major third apart, or every 4th fret of the 12 frets in the octave (3x4=12); and in the Dim.7th chord, they are a minor third apart, or every 3rd fret of the 12 frets in the octave (4x3=12). Now try this: On the top 3 strings, form an Augmented triad. First, and one note at a time, flatten each of those Aug. triad notes and you will automatically form, or “PARENT” 3 different major triads; instead, try sharpening each one of those Aug. triad’s notes, one at a time, and you will “parent” 3 minor triads. - Now for the Dim.7th chord: try flattening each of those notes, one at a time, and you will automatically “parent” 4 different Dominant 7th chords. - This is on the same level as, or even higher, than CAGED in terms of unlocking the nature of the fretboard in standard tuning. Martino, the genius, noticed these facts about how the guitar functions or “works”. This is a really cool observance that Martino made; and I want to help popularize it. It’s that good! If you ever had a chance to meet Pat in person, you would have encountered a kind gentle soul. Musical genius goes without saying. I’m sure Pat’s next journey will be just as exciting and enlightening as this one was.

My wife and I saw this trio in Chicago at the Jazz Showcase. One of the best that we have seen over the years ! We are so very sad that Joey has died at the young age of 51 .
Saw Joey and Billy Hart with Pat at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley in Seattle during this period (November 2002). Also an amazing performance. Drove 6 hours in a surprise snow squall to get there from Vancouver, Canada but we made it :-)
Here's what I got from the generations like Mr Martino that came before many of us. They went out and played, they didn't sit around over analyzing what others were or did do and critique it.. Get out and play forget the over analyzing mind fuck..

I don't know. Playing a million notes an hour doesn't equal music to me. I've never like Joe Pass and Martino isn't my thing either. There's no musicality. I still say Montgomery and Benson are the top of the heap. They could play fast and slow but always with musicality. When they played fast it was for a reason, not just to play fast. Just my two cents.
