      Completely agree. John Prine has this homespun authenticity that draws you in no matter what else is going on in your life. "Angel from Montgomery" is one of my all-time favorite songs (particularly Susan Tedeschi's cover of it), but "Hello in There," "Dear Abby," "Unwed Fathers," you can't go wrong with basically any choice you make.

    John Prine was absolutely hilarious, and also a keen observer of the human condition, and he'd set all to a tune
    over 3 to 5 chords and sing it to ya. The Mark Twain of American songcraft.

    • @kristiswa
      @kristiswa ปีที่แล้ว

      And it bears repeating, Roger Miller (one of Prine's main inspirations) wrote all the songs for the musical "Big River", based on Mark Twain's "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn". The Broadway play won 7 Tonys! Fabulous soundtrack...don't miss it. John Goodman plays Pappy.

That said, I went to a concert where Bonnie Raitt, the Indigo Girls, and (I think) Dar Williams performed "Angel from Montgomery" that had an a capella section in four-part harmony 20+ years ago that was truly incredible. It was their encore and it just made you wish the concert would never end.

    I’ve literally been listening to John Prine since I was in the womb. That man wrote the soundtrack to the first 37 years of my life, and losing him has been like losing my Dad all over again. When I was little, I would sit in my Daddy’s lap and he would sing Prine songs to me, and then later we would sing them together. Between John Prine and Guy Clark, two of the best singer/songwriters in Americana, I have had a lot of good music in my life and I always love seeing someone else discover what has brought me so much joy. Thanks for doing one for him.

    Story for all you Prine fans. A friend was in Navy boot camp at Great Lakes Training Center. Back then, the 60s, you got one day off during 2 months. His day came on a huge Chicago snow storm. He was determined to go downtown. He told the cabbie he wanted to hear some music. Two blues clubs were closed so the cabbie took him to this hippie joint about 5 blocks from the lake near the history museum. Inside there was a bartender, 4 customers, and the performers. John Prine, Steve Goodman, and Jimmy Buffet. The three of them sat down at a table with the customers and traded songs and stories for about 4 hours. They were all in their early 20s. Their careers hadn’t started yet.

      @@richardjackson1858 You got it wrong, Richard - dead wrong! John had been touring (followed by a few days vacation in Paris) in Europe where COVID-19 was escalating in Jan/Feb of 2020. Within weeks of their return to the U.S., first his wife Fiona and then John himself tested positive for the coronavirus. Fiona survived but John, with several underlying conditions, unfortunately didn't make it. The FACT is if John hadn't contracted COVID-19 overseas, he'd STILL BE ALIVE TODAY, therefore it was COVID-19 that caused his death.

    John Prine has been a member of my family since I was a small child. When my mom died we played this song at her service. It describes the relationship she had w/ my dad and it makes me cry every damn time I hear it. You can get into some of his other stuff that he wrote with John Goodman. Dear Abby is a good one (and another funny one you will LOVE!). His newest album is fantastic and "When I get to Heaven" is great. Keep up with the Prine. His writing will make you laugh and cry. He is poetry. Enjoy his music. Dig into that catalogue and you will find gold. Pure gold.

    I love John's work. I couldn't bring myself to listen to his recordings since he passed. Too painful. This is the first one and glad I did, because it's a new one for me. He was a national treasure, a song writer of the highest order. This is a particularly silly song for him, though he uses humor often. He has a way of getting down to the underlying human condition. The nitty gritty of life. He understands working people, the poor, the sadness that runs through so many lives. With John your either laughing or crying. Please listen to more of his music. My favorite is Angel from Montgomery, which Bonnie Raitt does the definitive version and Bonnie should be listened to for her own great talent (another giant). Other great songs are Dear Abby, When I Get To Heaven, Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven , Hello In There, and don't forget Sam Stone with the line " There's a hole in Daddy's arm, where all the money goes" about Viet Vet with drug addiction and so many more. Iris Dement who shares the stage in this video is also a talented song writer in her own right.

    Diamond in the Rough is probably one of the best albums ever made. It is fun, funny, and bittersweet too. Clocks and Spoons is one of my all time favorite songs. One of those painfully bittersweet songs about the mental health problems war vets face. I'd strongly suggest listening to that song, not as a reaction but just a human being empathetic of other people's pain. It's a beautiful, but painful song.
    Still really happy you're doing this, J. We should all do our best to keep our eyes and ears open to new experiences and hope that commonality brings us closer together.
