- A playthrough of Nintendo's 1994 puzzle game for the Super Nintendo, Tetris & Dr. Mario.
I play both games in this video. I start with Tetris, playing A Mode until I get a game over on level twenty. At 16:42 I switch to B Mode and clear a quick round at level five on the fastest speed. Then I switch to Dr. Mario at 19:13, playing until I finish level twenty-five, and finally, at 1:47:35, I do a few quick versus rounds against the CPU.
Tetris & Dr. Mario contains both complete games on one cartridge with both NES games' graphics and sound now upgraded to take advantage of the 16-bit hardware. The graphics are a bit more gaudy, but they look nice enough considering that it's a puzzle game. The soundtracks both got a huge boot up the behind, and the remixed music is probably my favorite of the whole package. I love how they used Earthbound samples to give the Dr. Mario tunes a bit more flair.
The games themselves are pretty much the same as they were on the NES. All of the same game options are here (though the cutscenes have been axed and replaced with a few really cheesy splash screens, all shown in the video), but the newest addition, Mixed Match, is a cool idea. If you are playing a two-player game, this mode will allow one of you to play Tetris and the other to play Dr. Mario at the same time. I don't recall ever seeing this idea incorporated into any similar games since, let alone on the SNES. Neat stuff!
When everything is said and done, Tetris & Dr. Mario offers enough to make these SNES conversions worth checking out. Think of it as a puzzle fan's Super Mario All-Stars. There's lot of good gaming still left on these tires!

If you're into puzzle games, Tetris & Dr. Mario is a pretty excellent package deal, especially with the added bonus of mixed matches.
For those who couldn't choose one or the other, here's a combo pack of both. Like Nuts and Gum, they're together at last. "Now only if we can get the perfect trifecta of Dr. Mario, Tetris, and Puyo Puyo."
I like Tetris a lot, but Dr. Mario is definitely not my thing. That particular game is complicated.

OMG, THE MEMORIES! I had a SNES in my bedroom when I was young, and I would always watch my mom play this game. I would also join her sometimes and she would kick my ass lol. She played it everyday, and she'd play it at night as I slept. It was a great sleeping aid as I was scared of the dark when I was little.

Puzzle games are the token staple of moms during the 90s gaming era. My mom loved these and Hatris on the NES

One could never forget such a wonderful collection of puzzle games. This is actually my all-time favorite rendition of Dr. Mario's Fever theme.

Mario's really got a *_"sucks to be me"_* kind of animation when you lose a game of *_"Dr. Mario"_* .

This game's version of "Chill (Dr. Mario)" - parts of it sound like they came out of EarthBound.
This is a perfect example of a 16 bit SNES remake where they completely butchered the sound effects and music. See also: Ninja Gaiden Trilogy.

Ugh. I really hate that game.
That is, far none, the absolute *_LAZIEST_* port of a video game that I've ever seen.
The graphics aren't much of a step up from 8 to 16 bit, the music is equally as underwhelming, the control mapping is strange ( *_"A" Jumps... "B" Attacks...? There's 4 buttons, guys!!_* ), and there's nothing... *NOTHING* of value in that game.
Nintendo definitely has some rather lazy ports ( *_"Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario 3D All-Stars"_* ). But, at least they have *_something_* distinguishable.
I loved the music. Maybe it's not as classic as the NES sounds, but I got a real kick out of the random Earthbound samples they used.
I think it's moreso the sound effects. That "Tetris" sound is horrid and screechy.
I really like the "Mixed Match" track though.

This version of Tetris doesn't have any easter eggs or special bonuses at all?! In the Game Boy version, there were certain things you'd do that would trigger certain things like in Type-A a rocket ship would blast off by something you did during the game, and in Type-B, people playing instruments like a violin or a piano would come out. I have no idea how you trigger those to this day, but I remember them.
And NES Dr. Mario has the viruses get abducted by aliens after clearing Level 20. The scrolling background on the screen after clearing 5 and 20 at least looks like a tractor beam I guess.
I think the scenes with the giant spinning "3D" Tetris pieces or with giant virus images are meant to be the Easter eggs, bland as they are in this version. Really the only demerit against this release imo (I also miss Mario and Luigi showing up in 2P Tetris 🤷♂️)

You'd be referring to *_"Tetris Attack"_* . Known (and reskinned) in Japan as *_"Panel de Pon"_* .
I had the Japanese release as a kid... and I freaking adored it. Very underrated game.
It plays similar to the NES version.

Have this game, love it but I swear the Tetris is designed to make you go crazy sometimes. I've seen the same piece 6x in a row...a couple times. Odds of that are 6^6 , or 1 in 46,656. Haven't played it that much. In general you get the same pieces in a row much more often than statistically truly random. I've seen tournament on the regular Nintendo and there is a difference
