    Nice job on the ups and downs of ETD.
    I was the lead artist on the orginal three Spyro games, and pitched the concept that became Spyro... and I have to say I was heartbroken the first time I tried to play ETD!
    It was VERY frustrating for me to leave Spyro behind when Insomniac left Universal to work directly with Sony, and this was made FAR worse when I finally saw what Universal had done to our little dragon! I have no idea how this game was ever allowed to ship.

      @@gospyro Whats funny is the more I read about this game on TH-cam, the more I read with how badly Universal handled this game from as very early as the original GDD to print. Constant battling with Universal just showed how they were NEVER a great publisher to begin within, & without Insomniac & Sony's presence, it festered and destroyed both Spyro & Crash Bandicoot in less than two years.

    • @gospyro
      @gospyro 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@TNVGAMING Yep. If you look at "Distruptor", Insomniac's very first game for the PS1, it garnered top reviews across the board... yet it hardly sold at all. One of the main reasons for this is Universal completely failed in promoting it. Universal bought a couple one page ads in a few magazines, and that was about it. I can remember walking into a game store right after it had come out and asking the guy behind the counter about it and he said, "Distruptor? Never heard of it"... I then pointed out that it was on the shelf directly behind him. Distruptor was never going to be an industry changer or a mega-hit, but Universals complete bungling of the marketing meant we didn't even sell out of the first printing.
      After Universal's bungling of marketing Distruptor, we were all VERY glad that Sony wanted to pick it up and take over marketing and distribution!!!

    • @TNVGAMING
      @TNVGAMING 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@gospyro I remember disruptor! Honestly Universal got so lucky, so quickly not knowing what in the hell it was doing from day one. In an era where mascots likw "Bubsy" were more common than not, part of me is amazed Universal got as far as it did during the PS one era. However as I got older and did a lot more research, I became less amazed as I quickly realized how much Sony was involved and universal was nothing more than a middleman collecting cash off the backs of other people's work.
      If I remember correctly, I think Universal was partnering with Konami to distribute some of their early PS2, GameCube, & XBOX titles, which made them seem even more inept by that point lol

    Is it weird that this was my first Spyro game? As someone who started with this one, I’m so happy that more people are finally embracing the act of talking about the game and delving into what led to its downfall, despite most people wanting to pretend it never happened. We should be talking about this as an example of what not to do with game developing and the hardships of working for companies that push developers to time crunch, as well as an example of what companies and team leads should NOT do.
    1:50 Omg, I was hoping someone would find this kind of bug! I used to see this happen with the brown riptoc in Dragonfly Dojo and, as bad as the game was, I still found it hilarious as a kid. Little did I know that this game was WAY more riddled with problems than I thought then. Honestly, Splatoon 3’s (which was released in 20-freaking-22) matchmaking loading times gave me secondhand EtD flashbacks. I swear the animation of the characters when they speak is like when someone cranks up the expression in Resi games to 200%.

    Yeah I used to have ETD and upon realizing the glaring bugs/glitches and rushed development, I was in denial from admitting that the game was not great, since, I too, am also a huge Spyro fan, but sadly reality is a cruel eye opener 😔. I just wished the developers weren't forced to rush this game and were giving plenty time to polish the game and make it enjoyable, because ever since I played the demo on a PS2 Jampack disc, I was really anticipating the games release. However, I really do like this video you made, Miharu. And if we ever get a Spyro 4, developers would look back at ETD as reminder and not to repeat that mistake. You have an awesome day and here's ten bucks for ya!😉

    I can’t be the only one who has very fond memories of this game? Seeing the mouse scientist guy brought back some core memories I had long forgotten. I can even hear the sound of his yell when you flame him and it’s been 20 years. It’s probably because I was only 7 when this came out with no real insight on what makes a “good” game. Either way I remember loving this game dearly.

    oh into the dragonfly. my parents knew i loved spyro, i played it at my grandpa's house all the time, but we didn't have a ps1 or 2, we just had a gamecube. so i actually sunk many, many, MANY hours into the game. i kind of loved it as a child. one day, though, while in the thieves den, my save file was struck with a major game breaking bug; everything began moving in slow motion. it's still that way today. i've kept the disk even now because i think the history behind it makes it a silly little thing to have. the first game i ever glitchhunted in.

    This is a great video Miharu. I think that Spyro Enter the Dragonfly could’ve been a better if they took more time with the game instead of rushing it to release. There are definitely new ideas that was implemented into the game like different elemental breaths and different types of mini games. At that time, it was Universal Studios that was handling the game after parting ways with Sony.

    Honestly, I’d love to see what Toys for Bob could do with this game and giving it a Reignited style treatment, but instead of just a straight remake, keep the premise and build from there. For example-
    Keep the basic plot but bring Gnasty back into it and give us more details on how Ripto’s back (maybe say Gnasty resurrected him). Put some emphasis on why saving the dragonflies is so important- maybe also make it so we have to rescue Sparx early on to have a moment between him and Spyro.
    Tidy up the level design and make it good while keeping the level names and themes, keep the multiple breath types and maybe make new puzzles for each one, keep Reignited’s excellent control, and bam, you’ve got a good Spyro game.

    Like a lot of these folks, this was my introduction to Spyro. I actually remember liking it, knowing it was bad, and finding it hilarious to play.
    That being said, I do really love the level designs and to this day still feel the soundtrack is one of the best game soundtracks ever made. I always joked that they put half their budget into the music alone. Which, considering, might not have actually been a joke.

    I remember being able to glitch the swimming animation in this one world in ETD. I can’t remember the name of the world, it’s shown at 2:10. I remember there being a pool of water that you could do this glitch in that let you charge-swim anywhere on the map. I thought it was fun to do this and be able to swim around and explore.

    Enter the Dragonfly is the equivalent of Sonic Boom. You can see that the teams wanted to finish it, wanted to give it more except the time restraints and toxic environment that was happening - that is really sad. My sister and I had such a ball playing this game, and still do. We found an admiration for this game where we would create our own stories and what ifs to fill the openness of the game. The controls on the PS2 were delayed and it took me alot longer to get a handle of than my sister that took to it quite easily.
    It will always be part of the Spyro collection of favourite games for us, the memories we made from playing it is what made it so much fun.

    Thank you for uploading this. The thing that disappoints me the most about this game is that everything presented in ETD has the groundwork for being a great Spyro game. Varied breaths and some of the minigames were quite fun to play around with, but the stylization of this game is surprisingly faithful to Spyro's origins.
    The music and sound effects fit right into a Spyro game. The characters, the architecture of the levels, hell, even the skyboxes are all emblematic of what Spyro should look like on the PS2. Everything to make another fantastic Spyro hit is here!
    It is a goddamn shame this game did not get more time in the oven. Had the devs been able to mold this game into what they really wanted, they could have delivered on a product that could very well have left as big of a mark as the PS1 masterpieces. Shit, they really seemed to know what they were doing here, but.. Just not enough time or leeway from others to polish it up and make it great. :(

    Totally agree with a lot of the points. I remember worrying about whether my disc was glitched but I found out later that it was just horribly done. Sure, it was frustrating as hell to do the usual stuff in the game. I'd play the original trilogy through enough times where I'd consider myself an expert :P but dealing with the not-so-perfect guilding and the slippery dragonflies was a pain. And that final boss came with so many issues it was ages before I beat it. The constant game overs because I kept getting hit and couldn't recover in time to avoid future hits- it was super annoying. Yet the game has its charms. I've played it through a few more times and the glitches don't always screw me up so I get some enjoyment out of it. But on any given day, I'd rather speedrun the original Spyro game than play Enter the Dragonfly

The Sorceress would have made more sense. Since her Arm comes up at the end of the Third Game! With all the flaws I still like it even though I was 15 when it came out… It was my last Spyro Game on PS2 I never even played A Heroes Tail. I considered that Game the end of the current PS1-PS2 Spyro’s. I didn’t even bother played the PS2 Trilogy Reboot since it didn’t look like. Spyro nor did it have any voice actors plus it had NPH which was a pass for me. But reignited Trilogy was a return to form for me. Hopefully we get a True Spyro 4.

    the ideas of this game are the best ideas in a spyro game but were poorly executed with bugs and glitches but i liked all the ideas from the levels to the dragonflys but hopefully the remaster that modders are doing fixes it and it looks great by making the levels memerabal

      agreed the remake will be the most entertainign spyro game it has so much potential just bugs bringing it down and people will see with the remaster of the game plus all the missing levels will be incuded cutthroat cove and baked alaska aswell as enchanted forest

    I loved this game as a kid. My only issues with it were the framerate and control, both of which could have been fixed with a remaster. But the music, the environments, and what little i understood from the story, all that I liked. Some of the animations were weird but i found them charming for the most part.

    Spyro Enter the Dragon is definitely a bad spyro game; not just a technical level, but a design wise 1 step forward, 1 step back and ends up with interesting concepts with poor execution.

    Omg, just from the thumbnail preview, I thought " I wasn't the only one?!!" I got this game with my PS2 when it came out, and, it being 20 years, I don't remember why, but I hated this game, after growing up loving the original trilogy

    I hope that this true Spyro 4 game is what a fourth Spyro game is supposed to be. I don't care if it's the opposite of what Enter The Dragonfly is.
    All these things considered, that is.

    Man you can tell the massive differences in look and gameplay when Crash and Spyro left thier OG developers.
    Not blaming the devs. They had to deal with new technology along with unreasonable deadlines and demands from Universal Interactive.
    As a 9 year old kid I liked the game. It didn't seem any different from the PS1 games to me.

    Definitely remember renting this back then and not being able to progress because i couldn't find how to access Cloud 9.
    Now its in my PS2 collection and its on my HDD...Expect the game is so buggy that loading the game from the HDD makes it freeze all over the places and corrupted my save file after one level because it froze during an autosave.

    I loved the evil dragon concept it sounded way better heck I would've been fine with gnasty gnorc revenge arc as well there was so much meddling from the higher ups and other publishers it was a big mess just as bad as WOC. The fact you can complete this in one glitch is damn ridiculous. I'm all for a major ground up remake but alas I hope spyros new game whatever that may be doesn't suffer the same fate as this one. There are some cool things in this game but all the negative muddles it so badly its quite sad

    This was the first Spyro game I remember playing, and I remember it being one of my least played GameCube games. Easy to see why in retrospect. Even as someone who isn't a lover of the PS1 games besides Year of the Dragon, this is such a disastrous and corporate excuse for a next-gen sequel.

Thanks for the new video on the the history of the mixed /panned reviewed 2002 Spyro:Enter the Dragonfly video game, **#MiharuTheFox**!* ;D Despite its rough edges and moderate amount of positive attritbutes, hopefully this will be a lesson learned from ancient history to positively improve and evolve the Spyro the Dragon video game franchise in the future! If Crash Bandicoot abd Sonic the Hedgehog for examples can evolve and make a comeback (i.e 2020 Crash Bandicoot 4:It's About Time and 2022 Sonic:Frontiers video games respectively), then so can Spyro the Dragon!* ;D *Here's hoping and praying, guys and gals!*

    Funny enough the spyro games I enjoyed the most was the legend of spyro games. My brother and I grew up on spyro but two different spyro's. He's a little let down I still never beaten the og games but I did have fun telling him as well as my friends who never played the legend of spyro games that sparks was a key important character who talks a lot for one and spyro using different elements. I do wanna try the other spyro games sometime or perhaps one day this game could actually get a remake to fix the flaws the game had.

    I remember getting the game for my birthday on the GameCube and being a little put off by it as well. I was 10 so of course I couldn't put my finger on why it felt so off. Years later when I was a teenager, I got the PS2 copy from a friend and went back through it and knew why. I know the game is bad and glitchy at best, but it was entertaining at the very least. I will replay it every now and then but I expect it to be a laughable experience. It at least inspired some good memories with friends and unique glitch experiences. I guess it's kind of like pizza - even sucky pizza can be edible. Even sucky games can be playable.

    I really do hope the folks behind Reignited series come back to fix or redo Spyro 4 with its original ideas, better looks, music stays the same (or remix it like they did), and possibly throw in planned glitches and being like "jk lol! Gotcha" as a call back to they heard people's fears for the game.

    The character models do look like the PS1 models, however, they look like the PS1 models but with more polygons. By that I mean, they look like as if G Six took the PS1 models and added extra polygons rather then recreating the models from the scratch based on Charles Zembillas' art direction. Kind of like the recent GTA Definitive Edition.

    It was a good video, but the problem is that the title is wrong. Because if this game does killed Spyro, then the Hero's Tail, the Legend series, and probably Spyro in Skylanders wouldn't exist. And Hero's Tail came out 2 years after Enter the Dragonfly.
    Honestly, the title should've called "The Game That (Almost) Killed Spyro".

    • @MiharuTheFox
      @MiharuTheFox  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Technically it's not wrong. In the documentary, ETD is described as "the game that obliterated a legend". It didn't kill the series entirely, but it did kill the Spyro we knew and loved.

    Great video Miharu!! I got this game Christmas 2004 .... but was disappointed that it didn't have that same vibe or feeling i got when i played the original trilogy. Least to say buggy, glitchy & painfully slow. I last played this game November 2018 (in the lead up to Reignited Trilogy) but wow it was exactly how i remembered so i had to use the "swim in the air" glitch to get around. But wherever there are negative's are usually some positives.

    I remember this game, I really wanted to like it, to me the main thing was that the character models looked ugly & the acting was terrible, the bugs didn't bother me too much but are much more noticable as an adult.
    This is one game that truly deserves the Reignited treatment, to get it right the second time

  • @hondragrid

    Bought and still own this game back when it first came out and yikes. The main thing I remember is knowing from the first intro cut scene that something was very off. I felt like I was playing a preschoolers game. The game was very baseline easy and the creepy characters models looking like some preschooler's morning cartoon. I know I fully finished the game, and have never replayed it since. I simply have a bad recollection of the game and simply just didn't like it. Which was sad because I LOVED the trilogy that came before. Back then, I knew why it wasn't the same. Because it wasn't made by Insomniac (I knew they left, the end of spyro 3 they left a message that this was the last from that development company) I saw "Universal" was in charge and even back then I knew that was the reason the game was bad.
