Bourg st Pierre - Cabane de Chanrion
We left the Hôtel du Crêt carrying our skis. On the summer way to the cabane of Valsorey, a few fat mamottes acrossed our way. This winter must have been not so tough for them. I heard that the last winter was worse, almost no snow at the hut.
The hike to Cabane Valsorey is about 5,6 hours. We did it 2 year's ago in summer when we slept at the Musso bivouac. This way is still not a big pleasure to go with heavy loads. However the groups started to introduce themselves: three Catalans, two Australians with a Chamonix mountain guid, four French with a St Gervais mountain guid, a German couple... Philipp was quite concerned about the condition on the last snow face below the hut. It was hot, the snow was wet, everyone was going on it.
The hut was full, 40 people squeezed in the small living room waiting for dinner. The extra-cozzy environment didn't disturb me at all, I looked curiously the faces around me, tried to listen their conversations. Hmm the food was not as good as at the Argentière hut.
The next day we had to go over a steep col (which was not so steep actually). Most of the people carried their skis, but we found that too exhausted. We prefered to walk with the skis, as long as Philipp made exellent trace for us!
It's only 50 meter more for the summit Grande tête de By. The skiing down was powdery and partly steep. We went down to the bassin and started a long travers untill going up again to reach the Chanrion hut.
I love feeling of getting to a sunny terasse, changing the sweaty t-shirt to a dry one, pulling out my feet from the ski boots, sitting down and taking the first sip of cold beer. We stayed hours outside of the hut talking and chilling. This is a beautiful hut, from outside as well as from inside. It's hard to say weather you have a better view from the terrasse or the kitchen. The owners are extreamly friendy, the man cooked with passion and creativity, the woman told me with a big smile: you are the first chinese we host!
