  • In the waters of Central America there are many battles. Battles for survival. Many times a cichlid produces hundreds of fry with that hope that 50 will survive and become grown. Today we look at an example of what "MIGHT" happen in the wild and see the startling and amazing behaviors of the Parachromis Dovii

    Don"t know if you see this comment but I am subscribed. I don't know you are aware while Dovii or Legunero are primarily a fish of the lake, "la gumero," the pairs produced so many fry that in stream ) rivers or creeks) they wind up losing some in the wild. Convict cichlids (Amatitlantia nigrofasciatia) and Blue demon or Neet or Poorman's trophrus cichlids (formerly Neetroplus now Hypsohprys nematopus) and other fish will attack the fry. The Macaw or Nic cichlid (Hypsohprys nicaraguensis has a hard time breeding in the presence of large colonies of Neets. Nics with farther up loose fry of Lagunero (Dovii) and adopt the fry until they can protect themselves. In the wild Neets are known to act like cleaner fish to large cichlids except for Legunero. This increase the ability for Legunero to control Neelt populations.

  • @ronc7998
    @ronc7998 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Scott, l love the fish rooms. I wanted to comment regarding the dovii pair. You spoke about removing the male, what about the option of removing the Trimac and allowing the pair to have full access to the space. Maybe that would possibly relieve the stress on the male since he would have more space to escape the females aggression. I do believe you are correct about the Trimac’s presence creating stress. I could be wrong also, but you mentioned that removing one from the pair could be detrimental to the one left with the fry. I apologize for my first post suggesting something since you definitely have way more experience than me and I have learned a lot from your content so far. Please keep posting the videos. I have been out of the hobby for 18 years and I wish I could get back into it again.

    • @ScottMclaughlinJ
      @ScottMclaughlinJ  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Love your comment Ron, the situation is (i talked about it in a few past videos) i had to take fish from my garage and put them into my tanks in my fish room. I am having some electrical issues where the fuse was tripping causing the entire garage to have no power. I came home one day to find all my tanks in the garage shut off with the water tempatures in the low 60s. I decided then to bring my fish from the garage in and for lack of a better word, divide my 6 foot tanks with dividers to make room for the fish coming out of garage. So your suggestion is right i would put the Trimac in separate tank- the problem is space and not overloading the fuse box. It is being looked at currently and i hope we have a solution soon. Normally in my 6 foot tanks i keep a single pair to each 150 gallon tank. To have these tanks divided with fish from other tanks is frustrating for me but a necessary evil until i can return them to their regular tanks. Thanks for the great comment and question

    • @ronc7998
      @ronc7998 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      King and Queen Cichlids Scott that must be frustrating. I hope you can find a good electrician that beef up the circuit or make another circuit to spread the current load and maybe even create a safety/ backup source. I used to have a Dovii pair in 2000. I had the female first from a fry and she grew to be a confident terror. She got to be about 7 inches when I found a larger male Dovii being sold as a black belt cichlid, LOL! They got along for 2 months in a 135. One day she lost her mind and killed him. I was not so experienced then but I ultimately found a fish store that would take her since I had to do a military transfer. She defeated everything including a larger red devil. The male was the only fish she tolerated for a while. They never had eggs hatch though. I later had a Trimac after the transfer and a few others. I struggled with water quality and over crowding. My Trimac mated with female jaguar and I had several hundred hybrids that over run the system. I could not give enough of them away to make room. They looked like flower horns with red eyes! I found yet another fish store to take them. I had to transfer again and I sold the setup. I had also raised a male Feastae to full size. If I ever get back In to it, I would have a 300 plus gallon with a lone male umbee and massive filtration. I love seeing your jaguars and Dovii since I have never owned any at the full size. You are doing what you love and I thank you for sharing the journey!

    Well learned alot more about dovii. I build a huge tank to eventually house my old commonity i had back in the days wich was red terror, jags and syspillium and texas.
    Well the terrors where first and paired up. Then i got 2 syspillium and a texas 20cm ish. Had to take em out after 2hours.
    So then j thought let's try a jag. What turned out to be a jagovii... bigger rhan the red terror male.
    But again the red terrors lived up to their name. I didnt wanted to fk up my whole aquascape to retry for 3rd time. So think ima buy another tank for in the livingroom. No plants just wood and good filtration and nitrate filter. Any advise on how to get dovii on pallets? Mine only eats live food. Earth worms and fish. Tried frozen fish but he doesnt like em dead.
    I got my red terrors to eat pellets by starving them a bit. They actuallly love them now but dont feel comfy yet doing it to the jagovii until hes fully healed and in his new tank. What does your dovii eat?

  • @johnlarsen8308
