With all due respect to Elvis, Chuck, Fats, Little Richard, Dion, etc., I’d say the genuine classic period of rock was from when the Beatles matured in ‘66 thru ‘74, before disco hit. Interestingly, this eight year period coincides w/ the heavy conflict of Viet Nam, excitement in the space program, major civil rights protests, and some quite excellent hallucinogenic substance use.
Spring Break, ‘75, left EKU with Joey, heading to Daytona in his 69 Corvette 427 4speed, case of beer iced down, 3 oz’s, one pre rolled. Sun coming up, pulled over dropped the top, Joey’s passed out, head on the window. Reached in the cooler, grabbed the last beer, grabbed the last pre rolled, ripped thru the gears as Jackie Blue blasted on the radio. One of the greatest memories of my life! 6 completely amazing musicians. When Larry Lee sings this song, you can't help feeling what he is feeling when singing this great song. Thoughts anyone?
Very impressive! This cannot be an easy song to have written or have performed live. My generation holds the record for the most phenomenal songs ever written and performed in history! These sad acts of today make a mockery of the music industry!
Great song by a gifted band! I saw OMD at Long Beach, Ca in 1975. They opened for Steve Miller who was 2 hours late and awful. Glad to hear the band is still together and doing well, congratulations guys!
I love this song also 64 years old now still listen all the time great time in life the 70s were awsome time weed fast cars sey girls good music BE SAFE ALL PEACE OUT
Boy, Michael You have this so right. Hypnotic is just a perfect description of this song. Larry Lee on Jackie Blue is amazing. What a humble person he is. Joan from NYC ❤
Going to see the Ozark Mountain Daredevils tomorrow night at the Arcada Theater in St. Charles, Il. !!! I grew up in Springfield, Mo. where this band formed and lived. I loved them then and love them now. Can' t wait ...will be my first time to see them in person. 😊
I consider this one of the best songs from that era. OMD is a great band. From the lyrics to the musicianship, the melody, the harmonies. no better song was ever written or performed. i miss the 70s dude. this song is a classic that will stand the test of time forever.
Interesting understated performance of singing/drumming. Larry Lee has calm, low pressure style without wildly flailing away on the drum kit or excessive showmanship. Singing style is equally low key without the screaming or the exaggerated vocal nuances of other rock groups. In his high-ish tenor range he appears quite comfortable. This is not to say the tune is boring, on the contrary he gives a soulful delivery with hints of a female voice inflection that is most interesting, and I would venture that many music fans are that more intrigued who thought the lead singer was a female. All in all, a great piece for a band that only had a few hits.Robertat 67.
Larry Lee has the ability to write memerable, classic songs, that we will remember for a lifetime, which l have. l love his songs written for The Ozark Mountain Daredevils. All of them. He is a great player on his instruments. And has a great singing voice. Amongst the great ones. Thank you very much Larry Lee 💛
This is from "The Old Gray Whistle Test" which ran from 1977 to 1988. The longest live rock show ever from the BBC. Gotta love this song. Well performed.
OGWT began in 1972, but yes it ran til 1988. This recording is from 1975, when the record was charting in the UK. Later with Jools Holland is now the longest running live music show on the BBC, running from 1994 to present day.

+Shane Anthony Grand Funk's drummer Don Brewer also come to mind as a 'singing' drummer .
There is also Kelly Keagy of Night Ranger that plays drums and sings.
Shane Anthony Ringo
My mom grew up in Nixa, MO and dated one of the guitar players in the late 60’s or early 70’s. She died in 2018 and I miss her very much.
Mom, wherever you are, whatever plain you exist on now, I hope you’re young and vibrant again, and surrounded by peace and beauty. I love you very much.
I saw your post and when you said about reminding you of your mother. I can't get through "Bridge O.ver Troubled Water " for exacr same reason. I want my Mommy now! 😢
@@marit4fl for the longest time Fire and Rain by James Taylor would make me sob uncontrollably, no matter where I was or who was around. Then I started to think about the fact that most everyone will experience the loss of their parents, including my kids someday, and all of a sudden I was able to put aside my grief and move forward. The only thing I worry about now is losing one of my kids before I die….I don’t think I could handle that.
❤
Loved this song back in the 70’s and it still sounds as good today. Great memories of good times.
This is one of my favorite songs of all time! Never gets old. I was 6 laying in the back of a station wagon when I first heard it. Still my favorite ❤️
I was 15 in 1975 and this was on the radio a lot back then for good reason.
This song brings back so many memories of my childhood. My parents played this kind of music. I was blessed to have heard such good music coming up
6 completely amazing musicians. When Larry Lee sings this song, you can't help feeling what he is feeling when singing this great song. Thoughts anyone?
LOL He wrote it.
Larry Lee and all the Ozarks totally ROCK! Thank you for such a terrific song!
One of the best songs of 1975
Fuck yeah 🤘 🎸 🎙️ 🎶 🎸 🍺 🍺 🍺 🍺 🍺
It actually came out in 1974 but yeah it is a great song
@@jayreed1493 Recorded in 1974, entered the Billboard Top 40 in March, 1975
@@timothycook2917 ok bro no argument here was just pointing out a fact
And ur definitely right because 1975 was when that disco crap started getting in the air waves
In my opinion Larry Lee's singing and Randle Chowning's slide guitar are the highlights from this amazing song.
I agree simply amazing
Yes.
And the piano!
The guy playing the maracas is no slouch either. Dudes killin' it.
Copy that
Very impressive! This cannot be an easy song to have written or have performed live.
My generation holds the record for the most phenomenal songs ever written and performed
in history! These sad acts of today make a mockery of the music industry!
You're just getting old.
It looked like a piece of piss to perform live!
38 special
38. Special
they were a disciplined lot! played-well-with-others... as long as everything-was-goin'-their-way, that is! ha ha
This track has been date stamped from the release date to infinity it’s awesome, fantastic tracks like this will never die,
Great song by a gifted band! I saw OMD at Long Beach, Ca in 1975. They opened for Steve Miller who was 2 hours late and awful. Glad to hear the band is still together and doing well, congratulations guys!
I was there at Long Beach too. OMD were fantastic... I was an instant fan from that night on. Yes, Steve Miller 2 hours late starting around 11pm.
@@usual194 I just saw them in Northern Wisconsin this past weekend. Great performance!
They were 😎 awesome
I loved this song! Such a sweet voice.
Are they still a band today i wonder❤️✌️☮️🕊️
Love this song, as well as any song from The Steve Miller band 🤘🤘🤘
Orchestral Manoevers in the Dark?

I love this song also 64 years old now still listen all the time great time in life the 70s were awsome time weed fast cars sey girls good music BE SAFE ALL PEACE OUT
Man. Hearing that song, I’m transported back to age 12 and enjoying summer vacation with not a care in the world. A great track.
Masterpiece.
This could have been a vintage Todd Rundgren song to my ears. Love it!
I consider this one of the best songs from that era. OMD is a great band. From the lyrics to the musicianship, the melody, the harmonies. no better song was ever written or performed. i miss the 70s dude. this song is a classic that will stand the test of time forever.
This song is so Reminiscent of the '70's Sound. Love it! Thank you Markymarky for sharing this Solid Gold Hit!
All in all, a great piece for a band that only had a few hits.Robertat 67.
well said my friend.
I'm 45 and always liked OMDD. I just never paid attention and thought he was a she. My bad, sorry.
It's not high-ish tenor range it's falsetto
I got FORTY FOUR thumbs up and none down, and there you are to nit pik...LOL!!
What a brilliant version of this song. They absolutely nailed it.
Larry Lee wrote the song. This is the original version.
Takes me back to the summer of 73 when the music was cool, about 10 years before digital turned everything to shit.
"I watch the sunset, but don't see it rise" gets me every time.
@@darganx What I meant to say was it ran from 71 to 88. I knew it was 17 years. But, my math was wrong.
Think it was 1976. I wasn't allowed to stay up to watch OGWT until that year and had this show on cassette tape.
@@darganx Thanks - I was curious when this was recorded.
You really can't beat TOGWT.
This really is a gem from the 70's....I love it. Nearly perfect live performance.
1975. I was at a remote Army missile site in Alaska. This song was on several times a day. Stuck in a guard shack for 12 hours sometimes more this song made an impression on a guy. I can't hear this song without thinking about that place.

Wow, being able to drum and sing at the same time, pretty impressive
After all of these years of enjoying this song, I never knew it was the drummer handling the vocals....that makes it even that much more impressive.
Hell, I have trouble walking, chewing gum, and not running into stuff. He's by God, pretty good.
Just like Levon Helm!!!
@@davidhart1919 Or Don Henley , Karen Carpenter , Taylor Hawkins , Phil Collins . Hawkins and Collins only occasionally!
Love this song. Drummer has a great voice.
Larry Lee
Larry Lee has such a nice voice. I wish they would have put out more hits
I'd only ever heard this one song of theirs and thought it was a woman on vocals. Had a bit of a shock the first time i saw 'her' on drums with full beard!
They had lots of great music. I saw them play many times in Colorado and they always were great crowd-pleasers.
"if You Wanna Get to Heaven" is a really good song that used to get some airplay on the radio.
@@HeartoftheDragonColo Lucky for you. I just saw them this weekend in northern Wisconsin. Wonderful performance. Love this band.
The band I was with had a nice arrangement of "Heaven." I sang lead and we sweetened up the ending slightly. The crowds loved it, even the cowboys (Western Colorado). We'd save that & things like Jumping Jack Flash for the 4th set.
1975 was a magical year for music, just google hit songs from 1975 and it a treasure chest of timeless classics!!...including Jackie Blue ✌
As I recall it was great run to the end of the decade from there - any of the noms for Grammy SOTY and ROTY could have easily won, it was a tight n classy field right through. A very competitive time to be in the business but the consumers were the winners - folks were buying lots of albums, spoiled for choice with the ongoing quality.
I lived it .
Like "they say..., BACK IN THE DAY" !
THAT was music, real music 🥰
I have a friend named Jackie. I call her Jackie blue because of this song. I never left the 60s n 70s. They left me TX peace

well i hope you sing! it makes me think of jack dorsey, it's so bittersweet..
ironic, but if you're on twitter, you should dedicate this , your song, to jack, and i bet he hears it, ha ha, i already did the same, last summer, on twitter, but i'm not really on there anymore, - it's a long story.. but that guy doesn't miss much, i can tell ya that! coming from you, maybe he'll take it as a compliment! he oughta!
This song is about a dude. A dude who was a drug dealer.
Hello Jackie blue

Great song, but excellent audio and video quality for something this old.
Does anyone know if this particular performance was shot on videotape or filmed on a 35mm movie camera/
@@estimator8670 . Definitely videotape. Quality tape has a crispness in audio and video vs film. And you "can just tell".
I think you mean "AND excellent audio and video quality."The drummer is obviously a homosexual.
Quadruplex videotape system.

So glad I lived through the 70’s. This song is so great. I’m from Missouri too. St. Louis. I remember when this first came out! 👍😎
I remember hearing this for the first time on the radio in the '70's. Everything seemed to slow down or stop. The song had an immediate impact.
It's a put down song about a girl,
and shows zero compassion for
her lifestyle, wondering if it was
based on someone the group
knew
I was 13 back then ... this song always had a spooky vibe to it 👻 ...
Great Live Performance 👌🏼 👏🏻
Whole album is terrific, I live in the Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia and love to play this album on a Sunny Sunday morning- “I have stones on the mountain, and a clear blue windswept sky…”
I love how Larry's kit has 'Cannabis' on the front...lol

My Sister never knew about this song, until I let her listen to it, and I will never forget the look on her face. She just sat there and just smiled, and I noticed that she began to cry at the same time.
One of the greatest songs of the 70s that still holds up today. A timeless song.
This is a hell of a performance.
Fantastic band saw them live in the 1970's, not in the states, but in London, England. At Wembley, the 1st 3 Day Country music Festival, over the easter weekend.
This song puts me in such a GREAT place in life and time ... Love it..
Beautifully gritty! This is truly one to put in the time capsule. It is eloquent and beautifully arranged. Not to mention, I totally respect singing drummers!
Fabulous performance of this band and their hit from the 70's....brings back good memories of my childhood in the 70's listening to this song on the radio in the car on family road trips......great music back then.....when music WAS MUSIC :)

Very well performed for a 70's pop radio smash to be done so well by a southern rock band in the live setting very impressive
Missouri is not really southern, but middle America
My favorite song of the 70's .. I was in the damn 3rd Grade ... has stayed with me ever since .. thanks brother
There are songs that define their own decade as no other songs do. The 80s were DEFINED by "Call Me" by Blondie. It is unique. The 70s were DEFINED by "Jackie Blue" There's no other song in mood, composition, or effect like it. MASTERPIECE!
when in HS in the 70s they airplayed the shit out of this song.
OMD heard Steely Dan and said, "maybe we could do that".
'Philadelphia Freedom' runs a real close second! Those were the days.
Pretty sure The 70s were DEFINED by "Stairway to Heaven."
reminds me of Kevin O Dwyer
I was just a preteen kid with big front teeth and a gunnery sergeant Dad. I loved the 70's.
