Never heard of these guys but somehow the mighty YT algorithm brought me here. The fiddle intro to Road To Glory got me hooked. What a great band.

I've always thought it was a damn shame that more people aren't familiar with the Daredevils. They were such a unique and incredibly talented group of guys. Absolutely wonderful music.

Didn't know but 2 songs of theirs before a trip to Springfield MO a couple of years ago that prompted me to read bass player Supe Granda's book on the band's history. He was the right guy to write the book as founding and longest lasting member. Can download and read on Hoopla if your local library uses it. Now I know a whole lot more about them and their music, who was who, etc. Definitely talented but got the sense that A&M tried to mold them into a different band than what they really were, after Glyn Johns stopped producing their albums (after the first two and best known). "Jackie Blue" set the blueprint for what A&M wanted them to be post-Johns, which suppressed their country side. With their talent and multiple singers and styles, they defied the categories of the recording industry and radio, so it made them difficult to market. I got the sense that some of their own decisions also contributed to the brevity of their national prominence.

The first time I saw REM in Saint Louis, MO in 1984, they played the Ozark Mountain Daredevil’s “Chicken Train”. Michael Stipe spent his high school years growing up
In the Saint Louis region very near where the Ozark Mountain Daredevils were from (in fact, OMD bass player Michael Supe Granda grew up in Saint Louis).
Anyway REM played that song about 12 years after REM recorded it, and it got one of the most enthusiastic responses of that outstanding concert.

One day, back in 1975, I stumbled upon their first album in a Maine record store. I had never heard of them, but they looked interesting, so I bought the LP. I was trying to learn acoustic guitar with a couple friends and, soon, we were all OMD fans and striving to play some of their tunes. Here, in 2021, I’m 71 yrs old, still a fan and playing some of their songs on my guitar, to the delight of the younger set, who may have missed out on hearing this great group of lads.

SW Missouri, circa 1973, Lawrence County- near the Daredevils' home ground... my dad & uncle decided to make their own homemade wine; had about 9 kinds in 5 gallon jugs in the cellar house... went really well with the 4th of July pig roasts- life was slow & easy back then; I was 24, now I'm 70, & the OMD bring back great memories... makes this semi-old-timer smile!

This is the only live in concert video I know of the original band. I have it from one of the trading sites and it's not quite this quality although it's good, mine was in the original 4:3 aspect ratio. Someone has done a fantastic job of taking a good re-broadcast and cropping it to 16:9 in fine quality. This is a treasure. Ozark Mountain Daredevils were a band I latched onto during my latter high school years. I loved the fact they could blend Apalachain roots with rock and make it very accessible and polished enough to garner some commercial appeal too boot. I found them unique and extremely compelling. These guys could write great songs and they were pretty darn good musicians also. A lot of talent no doubt. They were on Herb Alpert's A&M records which was known for diverse excellence artists. Thanks to whoever re-did this video and mega-thanks to the poster. This band should not be forgotten. Classic rock stations seem to only play Jackie Blue and that's such a small part of what this band sounded like. The BBC was light-years ahead of US TV in showcasing great rock music so the ultimate thanks go to the BBC for giving us treasures like this concert. This and the early Billy Joel BBC concert are two of my all-time favorites.

    • @CoherentChimp
      @CoherentChimp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes, these were the days when the BBC made some quirky or unusual shows (for their time) which weren't aimed at a mass audience. Sir David Attenborough, the well known wildlife film maker and narrator, gave the go ahead for The Old Grey Whistle Test ( and Monty Python) when he was in charge of the BBC2 TV channel. It quickly became a popular and influential show with mainly younger viewers who were interested in music and bands which didn't normally feature in the singles charts. British viewers were introduced to numerous American bands and singers over the years and it was a shame when it was pulled off the air in the 80's.

In the 70s I used to drive a company car that had a faulty cassette player that wouldn't eject the cassette. At the time I was going to gigs watching punk bands (in London) and the cassette that was stuck in the machine was The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, this was further from punk than Stravinsky was from the Bay City Rollers and I hated it but it was the only thing I could listen to and every time I drove that car I would listen to it and I began to appreciate it and eventually loved it. I still liked punk but my musical education went up a notch. Great band.

Gotta love OMD. My father put me on to this band and I loved them from the get-go. Having said that, a similar thing as what happened to you happened to me in a work truck where the radio was finicky and the only CD in the truck was from a band called Gomez, the album called Liquid Skin. I wasn't really into it during the first track, but by the end of the album I was completely sold on the band and I now have all of their albums.

chris rainbow --- 'Glad that you love The Ozarks as much as I do, but, funny as it sounds, "Jackie Blue" was (to me) the one song they did, which didn't really sound like them. And THAT was the song that got most of the AIRPLAY.
I always felt that if the only song a person ever heard, by this band, was, "Jackie Blue...then that person really hadn't heard The Ozark Mt. Daredevils. And don't get me wrong. It's a great song...It just doesn't sound like anything else they ever did (Think Pink Floyd doing "Hound Dog").

@@Newton14alan Group was 'f'd' over by sound of the time for 'Jackie Blue' and their 'Jim Dandy' cover to be the only thing they're known for. Compared to Eagles? That would be the Bernie Leaden years, maybe. More Flying Burrito Brothers, Poco, Amazing Rhythm Aces, Byrds or (dare l say) Dr Hook. Maybe Nitty Gritty Dirt Band? This group was drug down back in the day for demonic back masting. IDK.

So unique from anything else. As a musician it's hard to pick my favorite group of all time but OMD is possibly IT. Listened to them for 35 years now and never grow tired of their style

Saw them over 10 times in 70's. One concert stood out. A band called Mission Mountain Wood Band from Montana ooened ip and they were smoking. I believe it was Supe came out and said where the hell did that band from Montana come from. They then proceeded to kick ass even taking requests from thr audience. Unbelievable night

Coolest fucking thing I remember from these guys...Chicken train but I always thought they used a different mouth instrument THE LONG BOW is the first time I saw it used. Every one of these tunes...And this band cannot be beat! NO ONE not even my boys, THE DEAD! How they felt when JACKIE BLUE HIT THE TOP TEN! ? Hit #3 on the top 100 in 1975.

Are these your friends - you say RW? Where in the heck did they come up with their inspiration? Sounds like they got together at one of their parent’s homes, and said let’s invent a *sound*? In very complimenting manner! I was 21 in 1976, and no band had this sound - totally unique!
