I think the risk of getting guard broken is pretty high even with the knockback considering the popularity of black flame. I am of the opinion that small leather is usually an upgrade.
The reason why no one uses knight shield is cause heater shield is a better option being lighter and having better elemental defs only having 2 less stability when fully upgrated than the knight shield (only 1 point if upgrated to crystal) Warrior's Round shield, Red & White Round Shield and Cadeceus Round Shield have same stats in terms of blocking (cadeceus having less poison resistance but higher curse resistance) Iron Round Shield and Heater shield have almost same stats (heater having 4 extra lightning resistance 2 less fire resistance and 5% less bleed reduction) and the heavy reflection only works on PVE (tested by myself) and again it weights more than the heater shield Everything else is fine, some usable shields should be outclassed since theres some other shields which are better and works for the same, but overall good tier list! very helpful for any new players trying to get into pvp

I think you're wrong about the heater shield. Despite technically being a medium shield, it has the faster small shield parry. So for all intents and purposes, it's a small shield with 100% physical and high stability and should (imo) be rated as such.
It's definitely alright, putting it in usable wouldn't be a stretch at all. That being said when I'm picking out a shield for my builds I almost never settle on the heater shield. It has 100% physical block but in many situations the majority of chip damage you will take is from fire or magic anyways. It is a very well rounded shield for the weight, but if you're encumbering yourself a little more for a little bit of a stronger shield you might as well invest a little further and get more stability in the form of one of the kite shields or the option to choose elemental blocks with the dragon shields. If your build can hold the black knight shield it can hold almost any medium or light shield giving you the options as needed of dragon crest shield for magic block or putting a grass crest on your back if you don't intend to block or parry for the majority of a fight. The heater shield asks for +0.5 weight tolerance for your build specifically to have access to it, east-west, leather, and the round shields. You're never going to use the leather shield and you're probably never going to use the round shields so that leaves you with the east-west shield. So you have to choose either: Settling for small leather and getting a 0.5 weight acceptable shield Investing the 0.5 extra weight for access to heater and east-west Going a further 2.0 and getting access to all the crest shields and kite shields Going all-in for the last 3.0 and getting access to the black knight shield In most situations if I'm going to be blocking I'm not going to be blocking with a small leather shield or even the crest shields. It occupies a helpful middle tier between weight, block%, and stability but I rarely find myself thinking the block% of small leather isn't enough for physical damage and blocking the elements with a heater shield is pretty much a no-go anyways. I think on both ends of the spectrum there are options that are good enough or superior to it. It occupies a helpful middle ground for some specific situations, but often times I'd rather take on the extra burden for some real stability or resign myself to taking a little bit of chip damage to make sure the stats work out efficiently. Worth noting is that sometimes you will struggle to get your build to exactly 0.0 remaining burden in between dodge tiers so in the interest of efficiency it can cause problems.

Hi! Ill address everything you mentioned here in order or at least try to, let me know if I missed anything: Firstly I mention gouge builds a few times in my weapons tier list but gouge builds do not change the meta for shields in any appreciable way, the minimum requirements for shields are almost always lower than weapons and so they do not result in any extra points and there are no shields that are weak for regular builds but stronger for gouge builds. In addition to this gouge builds are not strong in general because with maybe a few exceptions the damage loss negates the hp/defense gain resulting in the total amount of hits to end a fight from either side remaining static or swinging in the opponents favor. This is of course ignoring elemental chip and other generally negligible factors. Some armor and in fact generally most armor has higher fire resist than lightning resist, this is a common trait of things throughout the entirety of dark souls. This is mostly irrelevant for shields though, and generally speaking irrelevant in general. Some builds will opt for a piece of smough's armor for additional lightning defense, but lightning attacks are very rare in dark souls especially in PvP. Pyromancy on the other hand is extremely common and so fire defense tends to be preferable, especially when it comes to blocking. That being said, another commenter pointed out that the crystal shield has high lightning defense and so is sometimes used as an off shield for blocking demon spear attacks late into a fight. This may be true, I'm actually not sure if spider shield loses its ability to block poison in PvP. Heater shield is overrated in my opinion, 100% physical block is less relevant than stability and it's stability is decent but there are far better options. Parry frames are also generally irrelevant because a missed parry is punishable regardless of the shield used and a landed parry is beneficial regardless of the shield used. I mention that I would place silver knight shield higher because of the stability but it also has very low usage and the stability is (probably) less relevant than the insane fire block of black knight shield. You make the case that you believe that lightning weapons are better but generally speaking the chip damage still ranges from low to irrelevant and you will actually get chunked by great combustion through a silver knight shield. Even black flame can hurt quite a bit through a shield that isn't black knight. The whole point of blocking fire damage isn't really to block chip from weapon attacks at all, its mostly about pyros. Since most dexterity builds can afford to have a stack of black flame and a stack of great combustion or more, the generally useful option is better than the niche one unless you know who you're fighting. Also the lightning block of the silver knight and black knight shields are equivalent, they only differ in magic and fire block. Weapon deflection only occurs in PvP with the use of iron flesh or havel's shield special ability as far as I know. I am unaware of any other situation in which this can occur. I disagree, the effigy shield sucks. You should never need to block a lightning spear and the stability is bad enough that most weapons running sunlight blade will eat through your stamina and then your health bar. In addition to this, darkmoon blade is generally considered the superior buff and a faith build has access to both. For a little bit of context on how awful the stability actually is consider that the blood shield has 10 more stability points than the effigy shield. Unless you're specifically up against a lightning infused weapon, the 90% physical damage block will almost invariably outweigh the increase in lightning block. I mentioned that both crest shields are decent but its hard to argue that the dragon crest shield is not outclassed by the black knight shield. The stat investment is almost never an issue because even katanas require strength investment and the lower stability and fire block is just objectively worse. The only stat to contend with here is the weight which isn't nonexistent but between the slight increase in weight and huge increase in stability I'll defend the black knight shield as being superior. My bad, I didn't realize that it was literally the only piece of held gargoyle equipment without this effect as the tail axe and halberd both have this quality. I'm going to assume this is a joke and just move forwards. No comment, who cares about the knight shield anyways. Eagle shield is high because all the other greatshields blow so hard, it is exceptional in the greatshield class. It is so much lighter than everything else bar none. Also I would never use it but I still don't think its all that weak. The big problem with not being able to parry isn't that you might want to parry it's that the opponent knows you can't, barring all the frame window increases that the animation itself gives. Unfortunately the eagle shield advertises to everyone that you simply don't have the ability to parry. Grass crest is blah I'd still rather have a shield that I can take off my back and use than a shield that is only meant to sit on my back.
