    We still use eprom chips in our diecasting machines due to the fact that we need a system to run sequence without failure or alterations they're locked inside UV proof stainless steel flap inside a Allen and bradley seris 2 plc processing module the chip itself is windowless so cant be erased. the first programme was written in 1982 and is still running without interruption it cycled with 25 sequences per cycle for 40 years. @ 1000 cycles per day over 40 years we estimate that's 12,000,000 cycles without programme failure.

    E-p-rom? *shudders* E-prom!

    • @obsoletepowercorrupts
      @obsoletepowercorrupts 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I call it E-P-ROM even if I shouldn't do. Is it a USA vs UK thing as a consequence of european (langauges that are not english) pronounciations? It might be a corruption that way. I also know that E-ROM is another way of saying it. So maybe that is where the "P" gets said as if it is "added" so as to retroact on that. Whether it is correct or incorrect, I do that.

    • @js3119
      @js3119 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From my perspective, you are both wrong, ha ha. For what it's worth, 30 years ago we called them eprom's; one word beginning with a soft e. When I heard you say E P Rom, my first thought was for how language drifts over time. I very much doubt there is a specific pronunciation which is more correct than any other. Fascinating chips back in the day.

    • @obsoletepowercorrupts
      @obsoletepowercorrupts 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe it is down to the mix-up with the newer sounding _"EEPROM"._ I guess one would make the _"E"_ discrete but then accidentally retroact on the pronunciation of the former, thereby nudging the isolated letters along so the "P" gets its ill-deserved time to shine. It is all too easy to do considering _"CD-ROM"_ has that ring to it.
      lulz ;p

    So basically UV is needed on account of the energy gap to migrate an electron (effective nuclear charge etc.).
    They use those on accelerators such as in an amiga a500. I think it would be cool if you were to do a teardown of an open-source TerribleFire TF530. Even though other "brands" exist, I say that one because it is open source. Also it is a big deal since it can have an FPU and 4meg with a hack so you can one day hope for something like AtariQuake to work with it if an akiko gate array gets made (via some FPGA magic). The amiga (especially the CD32 and a500 and a1200) were a really big deal in Europe (especially UK and a bit in Australia) and yet, even though commodore was USA, the amiga didn't quite get as much love in the USA. Consideirng the USA loved the c64 massivley, it seems a bit shocking they didn't have such extreme passion for the amiga. Now of course with the retro gaming scene, america is really getting into the amiga more (and totally regretting not being into it enough first time round). Better late than never, USA. _The Guru Meditation_ is a good channel for an example.

      Is it possible to dump the contents of an eprom for burning into more eproms? Vintage computing really needs to be able to do this because of all the failing chips.

    • @obsoletepowercorrupts
      @obsoletepowercorrupts 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gregorymalchuk272 Yes you can. You can either plug the chip directly into a usb device for writing to various eeprom (or similar devices, PIC etc) usually found online for about £60 or maybe $80 (give or take $10 depending on your postage), but they were cheaper in the past at circa £50. So a TL866II gives you most adaptors not only for EEPROM but various other nand or nor gate memory such as BIOS chips on a PC. You can also program a CPLD or whatever.
      Or, you can instead use a raspberry-pi GPIO such as a raspberrypi3b because all raspberry-pi models have the same GPIO pin layout. Then you read or write the EEPROM plugged into a "bread board" connected by wires between the EEPROM and the raspberry-pi gpio, by using the command-line in linux (usually debian). The Pi way is harder (more to learn) but a Pizero is $5. You can program a CPLD with a pi like that. That is how the amiga accelerator TerribleFire boards are done.

    There are eeprom ic’s in this plasma television set I’m repairing. Usually they’re faulty if the power supply caps doesn’t pop first. I would really love to get my hands on the programmed firmware and a programmer to flash new ones.

      Easy mistake to do anyway, between "bits, bytes, kilo, kibi, mega, mebi, giga, gibi, tera, tebi, etc etc etc...
      I mistaken myself and correct now my post : 8 Gigabytes is actually (now) 8 000 000 000 bytes ! F_cking new denomination !
      2^33 bytes would actually be (now) equal to EIGHT GIBIBYTES ! ! ! (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilobyte)

      Or 1GB = 1 000 000 kB. More specifically, 1 GiB = 1 048 576 kiB (binary base equivalents made before the decimal base versions became prominent)

    I like EPROM when i was kid i always imagine that how my super mario game program inside the EPROM die, which the whole world of game inside the chips it how cool . I went to the scarp store to buy some EPROM chip and i keep in my pencil box and bring to school..
    I did tried to program 2708 last time i failed , later i found a book have a circuit which using 555 to generate 50mS pulse , it require 50mS pulse to enable PRGM pin while Vpp supply 12.5V or 21V for 2732 and 25V for 2716, so still can program the EPROM byte by byte it take a long time to program 1KB program.

    1GB = 1024MB
    8GB = 8192MB

    • @michalnemecek3575
      @michalnemecek3575 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      no, he meant 8 million kilobytes.
      Also, 1GB is not 1024 MB
      1GB = 1 000 MB = 1 000 000 kB = 1 000 000 000 B, but
      1 GiB = 1 024 MiB = 1 048 576 kiB = 1 073 741 824 B. Gibi/mebi/kibibytes are based on powers of 2 (1024), while giga/mega/kilobytes are based on powers of 10 (1000).
      I know, it's stupid. External HDD sizes are usually in gigabytes, while Windows uses gibibytes, even though it shows GB instead of GiB. This is why a 1TB HDD is a 931.32 GB HDD in Windows.

    • @ducksonplays4190
      @ducksonplays4190 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael 1024 bytes is a kilobyte 1000 is a kilobit this is how it is for example the mos 6502 has a 16 bit address so it can address 65536 bytes divide that by 1000 and 1024 one will equal exactly 64 and the other 65.535 and that isn't right when dividing binary numbers that are equal or greater than 1024 it will always be even if its kilobytes if it's a binary numbers max integer

    1GB=1,000MB not 1,000,000. Also, 1MB=8,000,000 BITS, not 1,000,000 because there are 8 bits in 1 byte. 1GB=1,000MB=1,000,000KB=1,000,000,000Bytes=8,000,000,000Bits
