I also live in 'zone 9a' where the temperature in general doesn't really go below -2C in recent winters. I knew someone who planted one locally here and they just put light fleece over it in the worst frosts, on a well drained mound, and it survived well, looked good in the next Spring. I don't know how it did since though, and it may or may not have survived, but if you're zone 9a I think it will do fine in shelter as long as the winters stay nice.. but we are due a cold winter I think.

Please don't scare me😂. I will protect it with fleece and let's see how it goes. I have used topsoil but will add more grit just in case. I have also planted king palm and let's see how they go.

@@urbantropicaluk I hope they do well for you. Rhapis excelsa I genuinely think you have a chance with.. King palm, I wouldn't expect to survive here and we have, I guess, a similar climate but we never know. Another palm to try is Livistona, and also I've had some success with Chamaedorea elegans under a canopy.. and also Chamaedorea radicalis is quite hardy too, if you don't have one.

@@theadventurousallotmenteer6582 a king palm can actually grow in central London 9b areas but not the 9a outskirts chamaedorea and livinstona are good options for both though

@@urbantropicaluk if you add sand and perlite or vermiculite to the soil in helps drain the water and keep it dry during the winter the canopy of plants above it can help keep it 1 or 2 c warmer there and keep the frost off a bit

@@NikauPalmCal Thank you for the tip. I will add more grit and will do the same for philodendron selloum I have planted outdoor. Testing them both!

@@marcusdosh408 Hardy ones are on my list and I have got 2 (washingtonia and canariensis) I am after NewZealand palm now , just ordered seeds ( to test) as too expensive to buy even a tiny plant:)

    Hello! How is it now?

I am not sure Rhaspis would do that well long term outside in the UK unless sheltered because their strong long summers help plants recover whereas in the UK we rarely get the same kind of Summer, so dont grow aswell over time.

I really hope that it will survive but chances could be far less given extreme weather we have had!
I just have my fingers crossed otherwise good money down the drain 🙂
