We are heading to Sualkuchi, a beautiful town situated on the northern banks of river Brahmaputra. This silk village is famous for its centuries-old heritage of weaving.
Did You Know? 🤔
Sualkuchi is the world’s largest weaving village. It is said that every household in the village is directly associated with weaving exotic silk fabrics.
My dear friend, Anup Hazarika will be our co-traveller who will accompany us as we explore the amazing Guwahati.
The first stop is at Baishya Silk Factory where we'll see how Muga Silk Saree, Pat, Mekhela Chadar etc. are weaved and how small handlooms are operated inside of homes. After a warm meal and loving hospitality, we make our way to "Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Regional Government Film & Television Institute" and finally an unexpected yet pleasant surprise meet with Audrey from Ekjute Theatre Group.
As I bid Goodbye to Guwahati, I am flooded with memories of the wonderful time I spent here and the love I was graced with by the loving people of Guwahati, Assam.

I'm an Assamese myself, and I'm immensely happy to witness people from other parts of the country and the world trying to learn more about these industries. I hope the current generation of weavers use the facilities now available at their disposal in the age of increasing internet connectivity to make greater contributions to this rich tradition. The weaving industry in Sualkuchi and the bell metal industry in Sarthebari (both in the western parts of Assam) need more exposure and opportunities. Things are improving, slowly but surely
